OKC Thunder Summer League Thread

Post#1 » by Clav » Wed Jul 3, 2024 4:53 am

OKC is playing in both the Utah and the Las Vegas Summer League as has been the case for a few years now -

** Of note to me - we are playing a back2back2back in Utah (As is every team there, but obviously one game will feature a completely different lineup)

Roster:
PG TW Adam Flagler / TW Ajay Mitchell / Jaykwon Walton
SG Dillon Jones / Jack Gohlke / Jaden Shackleford / Cormac Ryan
W TW Alex Ducas / Buddy Boeheim / Keyonte Johnson / Miller Kopp
PF Clarence Daniels / Ousmane Dieng / Hunter Maldonado
C KJ Williams / Tre Mitchell / Kylor Kelley

not on the roster:
SG Wallace
C Holmgren
W Caleb McConnell
C Jaylin Williams

Updated the OP with our roster for SL

Notes:
We will be giving looks at PG for Flagler and Ajay Mitchell primarily while Dillon Jones will also probably have initiator duties and heavy looks as a wing initiator like Jdub.

Shackleford, Kopp, Keyontae Johnson, Maldonado, and KJ Williams - all playing to remain with OKC Blue or other GL team.

OKC adding 3 more deep prospects with Golhke, Ryan, and Walton - could end up on the Blue this szn. Probably get a lot of looks in G2 in Utah for these guys (on our middle game of a b2b2b)

I'm most interested in how our other TW, and frontcourt play - Alex Ducas, Tre Mitchell, and Kylor Kelley - Are they prospects to keep around?

Dieng should be our best player on the court, looking for him to show that he doesn't need to play in SL anymore. =

Vs Philadelphia in G1 -

No. 16 pick Jared McCain likely to start.

RJ Hampton is on the roster, Tony Bradley (former Thunder player), Romeo Langford - all 4 years of exp or more.

Darius Days - played with HOU and is a decent PF prospect.

No. 41 Adem Bona - PHL rookie also will see lots of action.

Anyone watching? Just tuned in but catching up on Twitter. Looks like people like Jones a bit. Dieng underwhelming.

Ajay Mitchell looks solid for me, good offensive package so far. Jones looks okay. The team is hustling but having too many TOs. PHL looks impressive with some of their younger guys. Bona had a huge highlight dunk earlier

With SL it’s easy to minimize the good and put too much weight on the bad. For example, it’s really hard for me to not be annoyed that Dieng looks soft.

Dieng was a prospect but maybe it's time to cut our losses.

Dieng is a bust. He's never going to get over his trepidations. Processing speed still terrible and supremely soft. Already felt this way about him and made that clear in previous posts but he would have to be a completely different player by the time the season starts to have any shot at being a regular in our rotation.

I agree. His consistency is troubling and he has the unenviable trait of disappearing in games. I think he should be scoring 20 easily against this SL competition. It's his 3rd SL and he's coming off GL Finals MVP. He played like a 10th man on the GL yesterday, not the best player on the court. He has skill, undoubtedly, but he is trending downwards right now.

I think he is a guy that needs continuity and he has never really had that. I remember hearing how much he improved over the course of his one season in Australia.

I'm convinced that OKC isn't the right place for him at this point. If I were him, I'd try to get back to Europe. He needs a situation where he can get consistent minutes in a consistent role and that's just never going to happen while he is on our roster.

I can think of a few place he'd be getting more reps, but I struggle to nail down a value for Dieng... And if not for basketball fit, for a language fit with Spurs, Hawks, and Hornets all have young French players.

The guys played a lot better today. Dillon Jones and Ajay Mitchell had big time performances vs Utah. Filipowski played terribly, and they didn't use Keyontae George, it showed that Utah's group is still pretty green. Thunder were running really nice offense and held Utah to 32% FG% the entire game. Nice work!

Probably wont see a few players tomorrow vs Mem as it is the 3rd game in 3 nights. Expect some of the deep bench to show up.

Surprising player that made an impact - Malevy Leons - came in and had some handy shots and plays to give us a little boost. Dieng finished with 20/5/5, thankfully he stepped up.

ousmane dieng doesn't need continuity he needs to be able to shoot. he's not an elite athlete, he's tall but plays so much smaller than his height, but if he could shoot it would come together. he can't, and this is a tale as old as time for many a thunder prospect starting with perry jones iii.

Yup... It's been pretty brutal. Slow-paced, tired legs game. It comes down to the final possessions though, so pretty entertaining from an even matchup perspective.

He did hit some shots late.... but... nto truly encouraging.

Tons of lead changes, and a nice win to end Utah's Summer League. Fun game even if Dieng was pretty average for 1/2 of it. He did make contributions around the court otherwise. Happy to see Ajay Mitchell playing well though, I have hopes for him.

It’s pretty remarkable how little progress Dieng has made. Even Terrance Ferguson and Darius Bazley had parts of their games that were clearly improved in their final year. Dieng seems like the exact same player. I still maintain that I didn't hate the pick at the time but I can’t imagine him turning it around at this point.
