Jeez what a **** name.

Sounds like a D-League team than a NBA one. What was wrong with the Outlaws and Barons?

Nothing is wrong with Barons. It honors our oil and gas industry. Outlaws is western. We need to get away from things like that and let the world know we are not a bunch of skol chewing, uncouth rednecks.

Barons is a stale, stagnant, boring name without any sense of excitement or entertainment you would like to associate with your favorite athletic team.
Thunder is just completely unimaginative and as someone mentioned, strictly D-league stuff.

And T Plow, I would love to see you make just one reference of any kind of the image you keep bringing up about skol chewing, uncouth rednecks to just one rancher, farmer or cowboy in the state of Oklahoma(or anywhere else.). You need to get off that and go sit on your mommy's lap where you are safe.

The reference is practically every name tossed during this guess the team name routine.

Now. Thunder is energetic, exciting and modern. No pun intended (due to the fact thunder is the after effect of Lightning) however it is electrifying. The name denotes power and as I have said many times, it is NOT one of these names that WILL be fodder for the redneck jokes. I am sick to death of Oklahoma being a laughing stock. This is our best chance to change the stereotype.

Barons. It is a term (sounds like you are too young to know what an Oil Baron is. Your comment about my mother proves that) That honors Oklahoma's largest industry. One I happen to be heavily invested in (not the reason I like the name, however). Oklahoma would not be nearly as wealthy as it is without oil. Frankly, its a compromise.

Now. Instead of making offensive remarks about someone, I suggest you accept their opinion.

I thought Baron stood for nobleman.

Wasn't ever a big fan of Barons, and definitely not anything that contributes to the nice "Oklahoma stereotype"

Thunder is workable I suppose, not my favorite name ever, but I never really heard anything that knocked my socks off

It has a lot of meanings. Oil Baron, meaning oil businessman, Land baron-same as oil except for land, Cattle baron (again same, just different business), and the major negative, robber baron.

In Oklahoma, baron is mainly oil baron.

Not every"body". Most will call them the Thunder. Why would anyone call a team called the Thunder, Thundercats? Most shorten the name ie: Mav's for Mavericks, Cav's for Cavaliers, etc.

I think he was being facetious. BUT I think we really need to try and stay as far away as we can from the Thundercats. If that catches on it will never stop.

Except for it being the former name of the team, what does Sonics have to do with the post claiming (to correct improper phrasing) SOME people will call the Thunder, the Thundercats?

I can already picture it, the PA Announcer asks, "Oklahoma City, are you ready for your Thundercats?" To which the rowdy crowd would respond, "HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Wow, what a scene, I'm sold on it.

Yeah, and I can see our players hanging their heads in embarrassment and the rest of the NBA in fits of laughter over it.

Just terrible.

I've never visited Oklahoma.

I don't think Oklahoma is backwater.

I would have much more respect for "Barons" than "Thunder". Barons is a name of historic significance that draws on the golden age of the state. Thunder is just lame.

I also think "Raptors" is a lame name. (I mention this as a comparison).

Thunder is much, much better than Thundercats. Thundercats is one of the four dumbest nicknames I've ever heard in my life.

D-League, Arena Football, and Minor League name. But with established names such as the Magic, Heat, and Jazz already in the league, it is understandable why they would choose such a name. I'm sure 10 years down the road (if the Thunder are still in OKC), it will fit right in along with the rest of these "singular" names that seem ridiculous when you really think about them, and be accepted just like the others. OKC THUNDER. Not great, but not terrible. Honestly, if I was in Orlando when they picked "Magic" for the team name, I would've boycotted the NBA. Now "Magic" is a pretty gay name if you think about it, but you don't hear players, execs, broadcasters, announcers, and fans giggling at it now. In due time OKC, it will most likely work out just fine.

Now we wait for the Logo and Jersey designs. Maybe they will be able to do justice to the name.

OKC THUNDER.
