OKC Acquires Kyle Weaver [Wiretap]

Post#1 » by Devin 1L » Tue Aug 12, 2008 12:11 am

The Oklahoma City NBA franchise acquired guard Kyle Weaver in a trade with the Charlotte Bobcats, it was announced today by the team’s General Manager Sam Presti. Weaver was selected 38th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Bobcats. In exchange for Weaver, Oklahoma City sent New Jersey’s 2009 2nd round pick to Charlotte. Oklahoma City held New Jersey’s second round pick following a July 2006 trade which sent Mikki Moore to the Nets. “We’re pleased to add Kyle Weaver to our organization,” Presti said. “He is a young player with a defensive mentality and team-first approach to the game. We are excited to add these qualities to our team in Oklahoma City.”

I really, really like this deal. Basically we are giving up about a 40th overall pick (New Jersey's '09 2nd rounder) for an athletic, defensive-minded shooting guard that some thought would go in the first round this year. I love Weaver's style of play.

I, as well, am a HUGE fan of this deal. I was really high on Weaver in this draft, and I think he at least starts to fill the void in between our talented forwards and Westbrook. Weaver should be able to break into our rotation this season, as I think he fills a vacancy at which we didn't really have anyone.

With the addition of Weaver could the CAVS/MIL/OKC trade rumors be true.Watson or Ridnour could now be definately be moved to the Bucks so the Cavs can get Mo Williams just not sure what OKC will get back possibly an expiring.

It seems Presti is making it a point this offseason to get defensive minded players which will definitely help. This is another good addition to a young core and also gives more depth at the 2.

I have been trying to avoid moving to this board but Presti has now forced me to join. I love Weaver and think that this was the absolute best fit for him. There were too many guards in Charlotte. So I am now back.

Absolutely sick PG combo for defensive play makers. Nice pick up!

Thabeet wont be first choice in next years draft .It will be Blake griffin OKC PF .personally I think the management will move mountains to acquire him .if he excels this year this is the first draft by OKC what better than hometown star.Thabeet I will watch carefully though but he could be another SENE.

the only problem with getting Blake Griffin is this team already has enough 6'9" guys. I'm not saying he would be a bad addition but I think a true center should be atop our list next year unless two of Green, Wilcox, or Collison are traded.

I think Wilcox,Smith and Collison will not be with the team come draft time. Collison might come as a shock but is the future at PF Nick Collison .he has quite a lot of value and I wouldnt be suprised if hes moved for a prospect at SG , C or 1st.

Good question.lol. I havent really looked ahead to next years draft because it's a long ways away. Like I said I'm not against getting Griffin. I too see Collison or Wilcox, if not both, being traded at some point. By the time this team is able to contend he will be in his 30's. I doubt Smith stays here all season either. Wilcox is younger, 24 or 25 i believe, so I could actually see him staying and being apart of the rest of the young core.

There 3 players Im gonna follow this year all 3 would be great addition to the squad.

Blake Griffin-6-9 PF OKC nba comparison-Karl Malone/Carlos Boozer
Demar DeRozan 6-6 SG USC nba comparison-Vince Carter
H Thabeet 7-3 C UCONN nba comparison Dikembe Mutombo

check out nbadraft.net reviews on all next years potential draft picks but these three will definatley be nice compliments to the team we have already.Thabeet is my only concern re-Sene

Yeah I've went to that site before but with school starting up I dont have a whole lot of time to start scouting guys. I wish i could see Thabeet play more but I dont always get to see UConn play. I have seen Griffin and he is pretty good. Strong and athletic and really is a solid player. It was too bad he got hurt this past year and missed some games.

My personal favorite is DeRozan check out you tube clip on nbadraft.net.Natural SG 6-6 and man athletic would be an excellent player to play next to westbrook and allow Durant to move to SF.

My personal opinion of Kyle Weaver is that he will really struggle to succeed in the NBA. The closest comparison to him (an all-around player, 6-7ish, with PG/SG skills) over the past decade has to be Julius Hodge, a 1st round pick who was out of the league within 3 years. I just see Weaver as being below-average at basically everything except perimeter defense. That being said, you won't really be able to consider him a "bust" as most 2nd rounders struggle to find any kind of success in the league.
