Thunder Rescind Chandler Trade

Post#1 » by Draino » Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:00 am

The Hornets and Thunder agreed to a trade that sent Tyson Chandler to Oklahoma City in exchange for Joe Smith, Chris Wilcox and DeVon Hardin.

One day later, the four players will be going back to their original teams.

Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced in a press release on Wednesday evening that the team has rescinded its trade with the Hornets for Chandler.

“We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster,” said Presti. “During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization.”

Rescinding trades in the NBA is a very rare occurrence. During the summer of 2005, the Nets and Blazers agreed on a trade that sent Shareef Abdur-Rahim to New Jersey, but it was rescinded following a physical examination.

He must have either failed a drugs test or have a serious medical issue for this to happen

Holy Cow!

I'm betting Chandler has a bigger medical problem than a simple sprain.

Wow this definitely mixes things up a bit. I wasn't expecting to see this when I logged on.

I guess the Thunder are back to Thabeet.

This is surprising and alarming. I wonder now that the trade has been rescinded, did the Hornets medical staff know there was something seriously off about Chandler's health and that more than just financial issues were the main reasons why they were trying to offer him up on the block.

VERY curious. I would doubt that they'll be allowed to go into too much more detail than they already have. You've gotta think that the Thunder REALLY saw something they didn't like. Especially after the all-out praise of the deal from all angles. I'd love to be a homer and say this is all for the best, but I was really looking forward to Tyson being on the team. I still feel like he's the ideal compliment next to Green and Durant. Maybe Thabeet goes back on the Thunder draft board now??

You rarely hear of turf toe in bball. Really unfortunate for the Thunder to kick Chandler back to the Hornets on that call.

Just out of curiosity, how bad is his turf toe? Is it a chronic problem for chandler that was undisclosed before the trade?

If it was turf toe, and we'll probably never know for certain, the Thunder probably didn't want to add a big man with bad feet and multiple years left on his contract. It sucks because I think that most of us were excited to add TC to the team, but I'd rather rescind than regret.

How do you know its turf toe? For those that don't know, its really painful, but doesn't prevent you from playing. Turf toe certainly explains Chandlers drop in numbers this season though.
