Shaun Livingston Signed

Post#1 » by Nolan » Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:12 pm

The Oklahoma City Thunder have signed guard Shaun Livingston to a multi-year deal, Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced today.

Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Livingston, 23, is being called-up from the NBA Developmental League’s Tulsa 66ers, where he averaged 9.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 29.4 minutes in 11 games (10 starts). At the time of his call-up, the 6’7’’ guard ranked seventh in the D-League in assists (6.0). He scored a season-high 22 points on March 27 at Rio Grande Valley Vipers and dished out a season-best 11 assists against Iowa Energy on March 12.

Good pickup for us I don't know where exactly he'll fit in with Watson and Atkins still around but he's another good young player with alot of potential. I'm guessing the multi year part is just a team option.

So guys thoughts on Livingston?

he'll have to re-invent himself as a true pg, he looks completely gimped athletically since his injury.

I wonder if the doctor who gave him the ok is the same doctor that nixed the Chandler deal?

I hope this kid can get back physically to a point where he can compete nightly on an NBA level. I think he would look really good next to Westbrook if he can shake off the injury. He was starting to put things together right before his knee bent the wrong way on that dunk.

I'd say with how well Thabo and Weaver have been playing, now they add Livingston I'd be shocked if Presti doesn't draft a center.

Who are the top Centers coming out?

Thabeet, Hill (pf/c), Aldrich anyone else?

I can't imagine Presti gave him much more than the league minimum, seems like a decent gamble. Low risk high reward if he is able to bounce back.

I think he'll be a nice fit playing next to Westbrook as well. It will allow Westbrook to play more like a SG without having to defend SGs.

Exactly. Plus Livingston can control the ball and hopefully tun the ball over less than Westbrook.

IF he can get healthy and most importantly get his confidence back this off season, this would be a great fit for the thudner - he is a pass first PG at 6'7 which makes him extremely tangible with an attack-first "combo" guard at 6'3 in Wes-Wes...I'd luv to see it work out for both Shaun and the Thunder

Heat fan here, just wanna wish you guys luck with Livingston. I'm really pulling him to get back to his old self. We gave him a shot but it just didn't work out although I really wish it had.

Good luck Shaun

I was wondering the same thing. Though I guess with such a small contract and small risk involved, who cares what the doctor says.

I find it hard to be very optimistic about this signing. Seems like a long shot to me that he'll eventually become a significant contributor to the team considering his history in the league thus far with injuries and such. However, it being such a low risk/high reward proposition, I see no reason for concern. Another good move by Presti in my eyes. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that we end up with one of the top 3 lotto picks.

I agree... longshot.

But with him being in Tulsa and our record being so bad, I figured it was a matter of time before we gave him this shot.

There's virtually no risk for us, and only positive rewards on both sides. I imagine that he could take Chucky/Earl's minutes the first game that he suits up. They've made it no secret that they aren't playing Earl and Chucky doesn't offer us much now, and even less later. Might as well evaluate for the future.

Hey guys, Clipper fan here. I watched Shaun during his best days, when he was a large part of the Clips success in the 2006 playoffs. If the timing is right here, you guys have picked up a true gem. I think his point guard skills are among the best in the league. He'll never score a bunch of points for you, but with the talent you have now, you don't need him to. I don't know a great deal about your PG situation, but I hope the squad finds enough minutes for him to show that he's capable of contributing in the pros again. I read in a SI article the other day that he had his first two in-game dunks since the injury while in Tulsa, so his explosive ability is on its way back. Best of luck to Shaun in OKC, and I hope the situation works well for you all too.

To sum up our PG situation it's basically Westbrook and then nobody else, so even if Shaun can be a quality backup, I would be thrilled!

I would assume that in Shuan's tenure with Tulsa, the OKC management has been closely monitoring his progress. I would guess that they saw enough hints to think that he made a solid prospect for future backup PG at the very least. In the best case scenario I would guess that a short/explosive Westbrook at the 2 with a tall/orchestrator like Livingston at the 1 would be awesome!

Really low risk high reward pick up. I wanted the Wolves to sign him.

I really like this!

If he works out to be even a solid rotation player I will be stoked. Presti seems to like picking players out of other teams castoffs. I really like this method of getting more talent!

That why Sam Presti is well known for his smart moves. Shaun Livingston is on a comeback trail to redeem himself as a NBA player. Can't say how fluid he really is since his return to action. So I guess as long as he's able to contribute to the team in a good way. It will help the Thunder out well. Looks like another good move by Presti.

I've alway's liked Shaun's game and wished my Rockets could have taken a chance on him. Oh well.

But I don't think he's going to be playing the PG for you. Players w/severe knee injuries usually lose lateral quickness. I see him as your future 6th man, much like Childress was in Atlanta or Christie back in Sac(w/out the wacky wife). Find youself a reserve SG/SF who can fill it up and an athletic PF,and you can field a second unit of Weaver at PG,Shaun at SG/SF and just run other team's second units off the court.
If other teams try to go small on you,Durant at the 4,Shaun at the 3,Sefolosha and Westbrook would kill.
BTW,Shaun was often teamed w/Cassell on the Clippers and did a pretty good job defensively on the Leagues' SGs and SFs.
If he comes back anywhere close to what he was,you are going to be very happy.

I don't think, especially at this point, Shaun has the shooting/scoring ability needed from a 2/3. His greatest gifts, IMO, are the ones that could make him a great pg... vision, passing, etc.
