Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minn. -- parents of 2004 volleyball Olympian Elisabeth "Wiz" Bachman and in-laws of U.S. men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon -- were attacked by a Chinese man while visiting the 13th-century Drum Tower.
The U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed Bachman died from knife wounds and that Barbara Bachman suffered life-threatening injuries. She and their Chinese tour guide, who was also injured in the attack, were being treated in a Beijing hospital.

Re: Former Olympian's father killed in Beijing
This was pretty shocking when I read the article earlier this morning. The Chinese guaranteed that nothing of this sort would happen, and I'm not trying to place all the blame on them, but how did a guy with a knife get into this national landmark during the biggest event in the world?

yep, pretty disturbing news, i hope this doesn't turn into a trend, but it's going to be a tough task to keep everything and everyone under control.

It's not a big deal. Don't get me wrong, of course a person died, but I think that it's no where terror related that something big will happen. I think this was an isolated incident, and it probably won't happen again during the rest of the Olympics.

I'm pretty sure his family think it's a huge deal.

Yeah, I didn't mean it wasn't a big deal in that sense, I meant, It wasn't like a terrorist attack or anything that everyone should fear and leave Beijing.

Yeah, it isn't a terrorist attack, but I still think you are under-rating this. Sure only one guy has been attacked so far, but the bigger issue is what it says about the level of security (or lack of) in the area, and THAT is something that people should fear.

For right now, they are on high alert according to NBC. Now, they aren't letting President Bush run freely around wherever he wants.

But before the game, all the media was complaining that the security is too tight and they couldn't go anywhere they want. Well, it is a big country with 1.3 bil population, security is always an issue. When you are told not to go anywhere there may be a real reason for that.
If one is determined, it is hard to prevent him to do some damage. We got plenty of shooting on campuses, in churches. The Israelis are constantly in war mode but they still get hit by suicide bombers from time to time. I don't see any reason to blow this event, tragic it is, out of proportion.
