A fast track- meaning a faster surface is used? If so, WRs should tumble, which is not really a good thing for those who broke them on a slower surface. Comparing apples and oranges, essentially. Kinda like those fast swimsuits that were outlawed a few years back.

Basically tracks are built with "cushioning" or give to them.. So its not like a sidewalk. Your sprint runners in 100m/200m/400m prefer less cushioning on a track because getting that quick start and running at full speed is easier on a harder surface with less give.
However, your distance runners who are doing multiple laps tend to prefer a bit more cushioning because of the prolonged nature of their event. So it is always a bit of a tradeoff. Although most Olympic tracks have tended to be biased towards sprinters since those are usually the most prominent so its not really a huge difference from some past olympics.
Olympic tracks can be temporary or new compared to some regular tracks in the circuit comps which may not be as new so not as "fast" or possibly geared more to distance runners

I'm finding myself in the throes of a very serious love affair with the Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh. I don't think she knows who I am but that's neither here nor there lol.
If any of you jerks so much as look at her I am prepared to fight. Consider yourself warned.

Yeah, I was really disappointed she isn't running in the 400. She could be/is one of the best olympians all time. But at the same time, when I thought more about it, I know the 400 (and by extension, the hurdles) is one of the toughest races, so if you have to do heats, semis and a final for both events, that's a lot. I think she could easily still take gold in both though.
I wonder how she'd place in the 200 if she tried it.
I'm kind of interested in the women races more than the men. I just found them more interesting at trials. The mens hurdles, Holloway and Rai each are so far ahead of their US competition, that I don't know if Holloway will have trouble winning. But of courses Rai has to go against Karsten.
I am curious out of the US runners if Noah takes it again. Kenny and Kerley are really right behind him. They should kill in the relay though with Christian Coleman starting off...kind of sucked for him he missed the 100 and 200 by a hair in each.
it's the baton pass, dude
Well yeah, of course if they **** up the baton, it's over.
I worry if they have Quincy Wilson run a leg in the 4x400 (he is eligible from what I know), that he could have trouble with the baton, but I guess he's done it before. Probably just has a lot smaller hands, being 16.
we all know the history
dropping the baton is practically inbred in the us relay dna. i have to presume they'll drop the stick but be happy if they don't.
but really, it's not even a matter of dropping the sticks - just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction better or worse is all it takes
we have the top2 and it's not close
i don't see the jamaicans knocking on any door

It sucks for the Jamaican women that they are missing Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah. They would probably beat us in the women's 4x100 if they had those two along with Shelley Anne Frasier Pryce. I am glad to see her though. Aside from all US partipants, she is my favorite olympian from another country.

I haven't watched too many field events. Being so busy at work I have been like 2-3 days behind on swimming watching on peacock and have barely watched any Gymnastics. I will keep up with Track though since it's by far my favorite. I will have to watch some more of the field events, especially once they get into the semis. Going to try and take off some of next week.

But she's still a top tier medal threat in a weak event for the US. It's not like it's a sprint event where she can be replaced by another top talent.
And it was a race event. Sure, if she didn't finish top 3 fair and square then yeah, you can say she didn't deserve to go.
But not like this.
As I'm typing this, the first american girl Juliette Whittaker barely squeeked by the thousands of a second a berth into the semi finals.
Zero chance she makes the finals.
If you put her against Mu and gave her a 3 seconds head start, Athing would've probably still win.
Damn I missed that. I'll catch up but did Nia Akins make it? What about Allie? I think that's her name...I saw her in a diamond league race after the trials where she looked good but she did not look good against other countries' stars in the diamond league a few weeks ago.

Those never sound fun...and of course it's usually the ending where it can get exciting, but the ending of the women's olympic trials was crazy. About a minute in this video it goes to the last 500 meters after Parker Valby led the whole race (like she did in the 5K but ended up in 4th to the more experienced runners)....but the ending in this 10K is crazy...and after Kelati takes the lead with about 300 left, it's far from over...the announcer speaks too soon as well when she gives it back up.

I don't watch all the Field events but I like the high jump and pole vault. Especially women's high jump. I'm a big fan of both Mahuchikh and the Aussie Nicola Olyslagers.
And there's a younger up-and-coming girl named Angelina Topic (only 19 I think). It was her first Olympics and right before her first jump today she sprained her ankle warming up. So she had to jump injured and cleared her first two heights despite obvious pain. Pretty cool and inspiring scene earlier.

I like those and triple jump is a good one. Or even long jump. I am going through by events on Peacock, so I just watch replays until I catch up...I can search by sport.
I am also kind of interested in watching Chase Budinger in Volleyball....Univ of AZ basketball player...also played for the Suns.

The Mens 10k was incredible, they pushed the pace the entire race and it had a wild finish.

even more insane that she didnt go right to the front in the trials. Imagine being that much better then the field and sitting in the pack in a two lap race.

The non track people don't seem to remotely grasp/understand the talent level of those 2. Femke Bol is a once in a generation talent, she's absolutely incredible. And Sydney is literally a once in 100 years level talent who could probably win gold in 200m-800m and honestly wouldn't shock me if she had the talent to win the 100m as well if she really focused and trained for it.
Like you can't even create a hypothetical matchup in another sport that would approximate those 2 matching up. It'd be like if MJ and Lebron played against each other in the finals at their absolute peaks and had already been dominating the NBA since they were both teenagers to the point where there isn't even a possible discussion that those 2 are the 2 best ever in history.
Except Syd and Femke aren't even in their primes yet. It's just so bonkers.
Men's 10k was crazy today. Fisher managed to still show his insane kick at the end despite the absurd pace, that's super impressive to still have those wheels to close in that fast of a race.

Akins did, Allie Wilson didn't. 6th in the heats.
Akins the only one who has a shot to make the finals.

Even Dalilah Muhammad was..the record held for 16 years until she broke it, and then those two emerged to be even better. Of course Bol cam after Sydney, so she hasn't gotten there, but she's young. I personally don't think she will break Sydney's record though.
World record progression....Sydney has broken her own record 4x after setting it.

I saw something not long ago that showed Sydney, Bol and Muhammad had like the 15 best times ever run..all within the last 5 years. I think most all of them are Sydney and Bol in the last 3 years.
