Some do, some don't. Just like some Europeans look androgynous and some don't. Some whites are unathletic, some aren't.

It rarely helps anything or anybody to start playing on stereotypes, which are inherently prejudicial.

First of all, Chinese DO have slantier eyes than occidental people. You're point about androgynous Europeans (never heard this by the way) and un/athletic white people doesn't apply because that is subjective and can be deemed negative.

Are you trying to say that slanty eyes are a bad thing? Perhaps its just me but I don't think its a bad thing at all.

Besides, I said it was a dumb thing to do so I'm not really defending it, I even said they should apologize.

According to your thoughts, if a reporter publishes a photo like this http://www.fundacionvillalar.es/imagene ... honesG.jpg in a north american newspaper and in the same article he talks about old racist behaviours in Spain, would you consider we should apologize? The photo is taken in Spain, but after all we live in a global world and some people in America could access to these photos.

Calderon and Gasol have tried to explain it to their american fans after all.

I didn't quite understand what he was getting at either. The question is way too convoluted.

It's a good point you didn't understand so I can explain it.

Those clothes are traditionally used in Spain in the "procesiones de Semana Santa" (I think I need some help translating this). They have been used for centuries and in Spain this is not interpreted as something racist. In fact, if you are black you can wear those clothes if you are a member of a "cofradía". However, if I wear those clothes in America people would think I am a member of KKK.

This isn't and apology, its more like a rebuke of their wrong doing. This is completely unacceptable.

Ok, well that explains it and I really didnt know that. At face value they would be looked upon as part of the KKK. The part here is.. you explained it. That is the difference.

I except your explanation to the image and I am fine with that.

I understand that the image of the spanish team was not meant to be racists or ill intended...however there people in the world that do take offense to it. I respect that Spain has a long history and culture and I respect that asians all across the world have the right to feel how they want. Nobody would do this to some asian stranger walking down the street and I think that is the point.

Again, not every Spainard is a racist and spain is not some racist country-- however racism exsists all over this world-- US, Spain, China and everyhere. Its a sad reality.

I thought Pau said it best... It wasnt meant to be offensive and if people were offended by it then I am sorry.

There has to be a point where we can all move on from this.

Um, no. I didn't comment because I didn't know what the heck he was trying to get at. And no, I didn't know they actually wore those outfits for some type of ceremony. They looked photoshopped.

It's so easy to see, people were offended by it, whether it was intentional or not, so apologize, don't hide behind the fact that you do business with China, or that the gesture was only meant to be made behind the backs of the Asian people. It doesn't matter where you do it, or who's in the room with you.

The Chinese booed the Spanish team during their game against China. The Chinese are a very polite culture and very rarely boo anyone. So you must admit that OBVIOUSLY it was offensive to the Chinese spectators. Maybe not to an ambassador or government official who's concerned about diplomatic relations, but to the citizens of China who invited Spain into their country. They didn't boo the US and they didn't boo the Angolans.

baroidi wrote:Hey I understand that in Spain it might be an acceptable gesture, as rediculous as it is. But in America it's not, exaggerated slanty eyes, buck teeth and bowl hair cuts are typical racist caricatures of Asians. The Spaniards should understand this and should show sensitivity when a great number of Asians, particularly Asian Americans are offended. Instead, they show no understanding of this aspect and instead go on the offensive and are playing the victim. That statement by FEB is unacceptable

Not really. Just because we dont know the history of those clothes in Spain is not proving the point.

The history of that attire in the US is considered disgusting.

You wouldnt wear those clothes here in the US and you wouldnt walk up to an asian on the street and make slant eye gestures.

I see what you are trying to say-- its just not the same comparison.

Yeah, I supposse Calderon was a bit more angry than Pau because he made his statement just after knowing the news. And yes, in Spain as in the rest of the world sadly racism is a reality, but fortunately not in sports like basketball, it's mainly focused in soccer with some group of fans called Ultras (spanish version of hooligans).

You are just proving my point for me.

That attire was wore in Spain not the US. In Spain that is acceptable and not racist. That controversial picture was an ad in a Spanish paper not the US.

Thanks for playing.

This logic is flawed. The whole ceremonial attire has nothing to do with any ethnicity other than Spanish. The photo the Spanish team took with the dragon in the middle and slanted eye gesture is obviously pertaining to Asians or at the very least Chinese.

It's not the same thing. Thanks for continuing the game.
