Actually, quite the contrary.

Not being from either of those two countries allows me to be objective and base my judgement on what is rational, not on any bitter emotion.

The notion of an athlete being the embodiment or personification of the country they are competing on behalf of has always been an ill-conceived and illogical idea. They are athletes first and foremost, and the fact they are from county X is really incidental.

Barbora even mentioned the date in an interview. Not being from former eastern bloc country qualifies you to only guessing. Rasho Brezec is right.

The problem with Russians is that their mentality hasn't change since. Now they are in Georgia...
This would be off topic here. UTFG and educate yourself and then return (I don't mean it offensively, but you can hardly understand this when you are not seeing documentaries about murders of random people and other things happened during the occupation not speaking about what it meant for next 20 years in Czechoslovakia; it is hard to put it aside when Russia forces in Georgia, threatening us and Poland because of planned defense systems (against Iran missiles); and Barbora is the one who spoke about human rights in China, she is against totalirisms and is not feared to say it; it would be a normal race but because of the date and how the race went if you are Czech you simply have to see it this way).

If an athlete is a political and historical representative and symbol of the country they are competing for, then athletes should be compelled to cry when they defeat a German.

Actually I know about many tabloids in western Europe pointing this way when they play football (soccer) agains German national team. I think it is odd. Such a thing never happened here in Czech newspapers and I'm sure nobody would write about Barbora's victory this way officially.

Germany is a democracy well aware of its history and new generations thinks differnetly. In Russia, there is a propaganda and it is still about how mighty they are or not. Many Russians consider other former eastern bloc countries as traitors especially because of NATO. No reflections of what they did. They haven't changed a bit.

We're going OT here if someone would want to discuss it further PM me.

The Czech may be pissed off, but accusing the Russian athlete of being on steroids with no proof is disrespectful.

This doesn't make sense.

Barbora Špotáková won women javelin throw and defeated steiod doped Russian today, which is the 40th anniversary of Soviet invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia! She was well aware of the date and very emotional during the natinal anthem. These are moments to live for!

We are all sad that we didn't see that hot Panamanian chick... with the javelin throw.

Anyways thanks for the insight.

This was only my comment. Check who one and who should be pissed off. Nobody is accusing but supposedly all other final contestant don't believe the Russian, they think she improved way to quickly to be it natural. And yeah I'm not a specialist it could be something other than steroids:)

With the exception of Michael Phelps, Misty May and Kerri Walsh, and the two USA basketball teams the USA has been a big letdown these Olympics.

Unbelievable!! US women's softball team loses in the finals! :o That's gotta be the first time they've ever lost in the olympics. DAMN! Guess they should've went with Jennie Finch as starter. Just stunning!

This probably belongs to off topic board. The problem with USA and NATO is that they haven't changed their cold war mentality either. They have done a lot of things specifically against Russia. In the late 90's, Russia was actually quite open, but time after time NATO and USA have done things that shout "we still view you as enemy and we are determine to weaken you" at Russians' face. What do you expect the Russians to react?

You don't always win what you are capable of, that is totally normal. Considering team USA has got 29 golds and there are still competitions to come, it is not far off from the 36 golds of last olympic game. You must have set your expectation too high.

I sort of felt that they were too cocky after previous games, and that often lead to surprise.

Well the US softball team isn't invisible, I remember that they lost to Virgina Tech in an exhibition game.

They are very visible :)

But seriously how did they lose to Virginia Tech. Is this supposed to be the "dream team" as NBC calls them?

They have the right to be cocky. They'd beat that team 9 times out of 10. There's a lot of luck involved in baseball/softball.

I don't get why they didn't start Jennie Finch?? The times that I've seen her pitch, she always looks so dominate.
