There's no way US can catch up in the gold medal count.

they'll have to clean house in track and field, and hope there isn't any more diving or weighting events

Even if we win the medal count, I think the Chinese might win so many more golds that you just have to rank their performance in the Olympics better.

All we have to do to win the Gold count is keep it fairly close. If we keep it close enough we will pull away in Track and Field. Most of China's Gold events come early. We need to keep winning the swimming events and win a bunch of the women's gymnastics individual events. Plus, we have beach volleyball (both sexes), Softball, Women's basketball and soccer and most likely Men's basketball that will add to our gold count.

4 more diving golds and 3 more weightlifting golds to go. 5 gold for badminton, 4 for table tennis. And there are 11 more gymnastics golds up for grab, one track (110m hurdle). That are likely the events China can get more golds.

I think if we can get it down to an eight or seven gold difference we should be able to catch them.

We are competing in 47 of the 57 Track and Field events. In 2004 we had eight golds in track and field (24 medals total). We usually win double digit gold medals in Track and Field.

If team USA only wins 8 gold in T&F, then China will win the total gold count. I expect team China to win 35+ gold, potentially 40 gold.

Monster day for Team USA. We grabbed four golds and nine total medals, giving us a total medal lead of 43-36 and cutting the Chinese Gold lead to that magic number of eight. Not only that but we put ourselves in great position to win some more golds Friday in several swimming events and we also had the Basketball team win as well as our May and Walsh team in Beach Volley and Branagh and Youngs beat the top seeded Cuban team in Beach Volley putting us in great position to have an all American Beach Volley final.

On top of all that China only grabbed one medal today (bronze in women's all around).

I expect us to win more than eight, but you're forgetting we still have plenty of other events besides Track and Field to win golds. We have the last of the swimming events (we should win 5-6 more golds in our ten remaining races), we should win three of the four remaining women's gymnastics events, we will get gold in both sexes beach volley, we may get gold in both sexes indoor volley, we'll get gold in women's BBall, soccer and softball, we should get it in Men's BBall, we have a good shot at Gold in Baseball, we have mulitple oppurtunities in boxing, Women's doubles in tennis and many other events where we may or may not be favored (I don't follow the events) that we could steal a few golds.

Right now we are eight behind the Chinese which is good at this stage, this is where we need to be.
