Yeah, the U.S. has 3 right now. I think that China MAY come out on top with the most Gold or they maybe competing with us for that.
So far this is how it looks:
USA - 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze = 3 Total
China - 2 Gold = 2 Total
South Korea - 1 Gold = 1 Total
Czech Republic - 1 Gold = 1 Total
There are a few others, too lazy to post the rest.

Probably only in US the rank is based on total medal counts rather than the gold counts.

Actually, you can either way with the U.S. IMO. Phelps will soon get his gold and then you can count it that way. If you are speaking of all time medal count, same thing. 800 something gold and then the next country is Russia with 400 something. Total all time medal count is like 2100 for the U.S. and then the next one behind the U.S. is Russia with 1200. So, I mean you can take your pick which ever way you want to see which the top country is in the Olympics.

That is fine. I just find it odd to count a bronze equal as a gold, so do all coutries except US.

Phelps is not human, seriously.

Since when does the US consider bronze equal as gold? This ranking was the total number of medals. The US doesn't have a different ranking system than anyone else.

I got this from Yahoo, not sure on how up to date it is. The US is in first, tied with 2 golds with China.

The point is outside US, everyone else rank teams by the # of gold, not the total number of medals.

I do not think the US does, just some different newspapers or websites might.

Maybe, I don't know where to find the official standard by US though. NBC the only media that has the broadcasting right in US does it that way. Foreign newspapers and websites rank by gold too.

if they ranked by gold then it would be called "gold medal count" instead of just "medal count".
We are talking about two different things here.

The United States should catch up. They get a lot of medals in track and field and swimming, and there a ton of events left.

From what I hear, it is under expectation so far. The Chinese shooters are underachieving in the shooting range (multiple title defenders, or world record holders, fail to get medals). But the Chinese weightlifters are just killing any competitors as easily as Phelps does to his competitors.

A lot of the sports that team USA is favored to win gold in haven't either begun or are just getting underway.

I think team USA is gonna trail until the field and track get underway. Meanwhile Phelps will do his part to keep the race within reach. It is just amazing that he alone may counter the whole diving dream team of China.
