I never played badminton, but I really like watching it... It's easy to see the ball. There's a lot of strategy, placement, spins and finesse like regular tennis. It's like table tennis that it is quick, more finesse, not so much power. It's more physical than table tennis, with no table to run in to.
The court is the perfect size for the video screen. No panning back and forth.
The defending 2004 Athens Women's Doubles champs from china just lost to a Japanese duo in the first match of the quarterfinals. I think its a big upset. The olympic bio the Chinese duo has a huge list of 1st places.

It's actually pretty fun to play because it's easy to get really good at. But you can tell how talented these players really are with their accuracy and angles/power they have with their shots.

It is a hard game. Some people think badminton and they think old lady sport, but man, if you match up against a good server, your screwed. Fun though, I suggest you try it sometime.

There goes the chance of chinese sweeping gold, silver and bronze. Chinese team has the top 3 seeds.

Hahahaa.. Are we talking about me? It's **** sad that you're defending a loser, her coach has been mad with her since the beginning. She's not even putting up a competition at times. I've watched all her matches. She was actually predicted to get bronze, but I don't think that's going to happen.

i went to atlanta in 1996 and went to all kinds of events, this may have been one of my favorites to go. we got really cheap tickets and were front row. we talked with the cameraman there and ended up getting some free shuttlecocks and the powerade bottles that only the players were allowed to have. its also fun to watch the asians hit back and forth and just yelling at each other

Unlike in tennis, "serving" is actually one of the least important part and the easiest to learn. There are basically two types of "serves":
1. Low serve - the goal is to serve as low as possible when crossing the net, probably within 2, 3-inch so that the opposing players won't just "tap" it back. placement of the ball is very important here as well. usually more often seen in doubles, and harder to master.
2. High serve - as high and as far back as possible without going out of bounce. very common serving technique in singles.
that's all. all the activities in between are much more tougher to learn. you'll have to be really precise and consistent to become a top player.

I used to think I was decent but after not playing for years, I got back on the court with a guy who played in highschool and he whiped the floor with me. I also had no arm left after only playing for 20 minutes or so.

badminton is actually pretty hard.
Those players this is something that comes easy to them...
Imagine a badminton birdie (cock) case (almost identical to those tennis ball cases that hold 3 balls)... put it on the opponents end of the court in the back right corner of the SERVICE AREA, and on your side serve all the birds INTO that case. Obviously this is a practice thing there doing the opponent isnt there protecting it. But imagine that, into a tiny case, thats the type of aim you have to have.
And for the guy training in 2012.. good luck!

i heard that at the point of impact, the birdie is the fastest "ball" in sports. i was surprised to hear that it's faster than the golf ball.
anyway, i love watching badminton. some players jump really high when smashing.
