I thought a few of the individual gymnastics scores were really weird for the women, but in the events I was concerned about the people who I felt got cheated ended up with the highest medals anyway, so it didn't seem to matter.

Of course the fact that China is competing with illegal athletes in the first place is bad enough that they robbed everyone who finished beneath their 13 year olds of a legit medal.

Yeah, I believe it's been a biased judged Olympics so far, especially in gymnastics. Nobody should doubt that, everyone can tell when a Chinese girl (maybe not even 16 years old) gets a high score for a lot of mistakes and that just makes it harder for other countries to win. I will be amazed if China gets to the 40 mark in gold in 2012.

yes, the ruling has been fishy during the whole games.

not that it's an excuse, but it has always been like this.

That happens every year. China (or whoever the silver medal team was) was complaining about the same in 1996. I know that they were complaining about Briana Scurry creeping up during the penalty kicks in 1999.

The IOC tries to mitigate this by having "third-party" judges, but just like in basketball, they're going to feel pressure to favor the home team when making close calls.

1984 Los Angeles Olympic: USA 83 Gold****home****
1988 Soul Olympics: USA 36 Gold
1992 Barcelona Olympics: USA 37 Gold
1996 Atlanta Olympics: USA 44 Gold*****home*****
2000 Sydney Olympics: USA 36 Gold
2004 Athens Olympics: USA 36 Gold
2008 BeiJing Olympics: ??

In the past 24 years, the United States has only ever surpassed the 40 Gold mark two times. Both times were at home. In LA they even got 83 *****ing gold. The homecourt bias has been an Olympic tradition for a long long time. Its not a new chinese trend.

Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles has been stripped of his Olympic 200m silver medal after the US team's protest that he had run out of his lane was upheld.

I know rules are rules but come on now

A US runner was stripped of the Bronze for the same offense if I'm not mistaken.

14 countries, including the Soviet Union who was the primary winner of golds the previous two Olympics, boycotted the 1984 Olympics. That's why the US gold total was so crazy high that year. If you look at the 1980 Olympics where the US boycotted the Soviets had 80 golds that year.

U.S. protest Spearmon and loses appeal so they then protest Martina second place finish. I didn't like that sequence and it was probably this tiny nation first ever medal.

there was a boycott in 1984, half of the world's powerhouses in amateur sports were from East Germany or the USSR

I think it's pretty fair that the US asked that the rules be applied fairly to both guys. Why should the US guy be disqualified and the other guy not?

Look I won't argue that point. I know rules are rule but if Spearmon was initially deem "robbed" then why do it to Martina.

You're right, that was the year the Soviet Union boycotted the olympics. 83 Gold medals is a pretty staggering number any way you look at it. The U.S probably would've still gotten over 40 gold medals that year even if the Soviet participated. Its just the way it is, the home country get a big boost in medal counts. Its not a secret. So why is everybody crying foul when the chinese are reaping the benefits of its homecrowd?
