Re: Draft start date

If we move it one week later (25th August), how does it work for Brian (wb), Woody and theman in terms of convenience?

One more alternative I'd like to suggest: Starting the draft at 15th of September (right after the world cup is finished so gm's won't be put in a disadvantageous position due to injuries which might occur during the world cup)

I don't think world championship should be a point of interest for us, regarding our draft start date.

Injuries can happen, will happen. I don't think it's much more different than losing one of your guys in the first game of the season... In fact, world championship injuries may not be so bad, since players will have around 6 weeks to mend their injuries.
If you are concerned about injuries, then don't pick players who will play in the world championship.

I think finishing the draft before exhibitions game start should be our primary goal. Since most of the breakout candidates show themselves in these games. and foreseeing those breakout candidates before seeing them play should be rewarded.

The later the better. As it is, we start unnecessarily early and finish up extremely quick. The long gap between the end of the draft and the season kick-off gets really dull.

The time limit per pick definitely have to be shorter in case if we vote for a mid september start. As sabonis pointed out, we need to be done with the draft when the pre-season starts (4th of October). So keep that in mind whilst weighing out these options.

I don't really care when we start, but, I always support a shorter time limit. (you can always leave a list!)

The current draft start day is much more convenient for me than starting a week later (August 25). At least I'll get a few rounds in (probably 6-7) before I'm on full travel mode starting Sep. 8th. The 15th of Sept is ok, and it might be better than starting the 25th for me, but the current draft start date is the most convenient.

If we're voting, I'd opt for just keeping it as is (both for my schedule, and I completely agree with Sabonis' point about picking break out candidates before exhibition games).

But seriously though, whatever you decide or whatever works best for everyone else, I'll roll with. I'll be traveling so much over the next 3 months (I'm doing the full Euro tour while teaching the study abroad program), I really don't mind sending a list in whenever I need to. It's no problem.

I'll say it again: our actual history suggest sept 15 works even with the 8 hour limit.

so you're saying 19 days is enough for 280 picks? 15 picks per day?

This league tends to draft rather quick, but Sabonis is right, 19 days is not enough for 280 picks. I think we average quite a bit less than 15 picks per day. So, we either need to reduce the time limit, or keep our current start time. For the record, though, I think reducing the time limit will just mean more people are late...

As stated above in various posts, the target date to complete the draft is the start of pre-season(4th of October), not the start of regular season. Therefore a mid-September start date is out of question if we insist on an 8 hour time limit.

I disagree that we necessarily need to finish before the start of the pre-season. There is no such logical obligation.

I beg to differ. It is quite logical especially in a deep league like this to finish the draft before the start of pre-season. Pre-season tells you a lot about regular season rotation and as others pointed out break out candidates stand out. Then drafting becomes less of a skill and more of a luck since if you are lucky enough to be on the clock when a yet undrafted player had a good game, then it really isnt fair to anyone else. Furthermore this league traditionally has always been an early drafting league and I'm trying to push it just a little a bit further to accommodate some gm's (definitely not a majority) wishes like you and floppy but I definitely dont want the draft going on well into the pre-season unless the majority of the league states a strong opinion towards it. So far only you and floppy have asked for this and I dont think that is enough to implement such a drastic change.

+1 on this one.
I think, above all, finishing before preseason is critical, especially for the level of competition that we have tried to uphold for the last decade in this league. Keeping everything as is is probably our best bet.

It does not make much of a difference for me as long as the draft starts after September 1. Still, it needs to be pointed out that the debate about the importance of how finishing before pre-season is pretty flawed. Pre-season does not necessarily tell you a lot about regular season rotation, it is a team people like James Harden average 15-20 mpg. And If the league is as competitive as you have said, most -if not all- rotation players will be taken by the 240th pick. I think it was Flip Murray who broke out during a pre-season (for a very short-lived glory, it needs to be said) and skewed the hell out of everybody's perception.

Lastly, no one addresses how people who get to be awake during games can pick up players breaking into the rotation before anyone else does, which makes this whole deal about the unfairness of drafting during pre-season seem a bit off.

I mean, how is it unfair? Do we know beforehand who will have the 274th pick and which 14 mpg player will break out while the 274th pick is on the clock? The answer is pretty much no.
