Money League – Official RulesFirst off, all rules are subject to change pending unforeseen circumstances. In the past, situations have arisen causing me to rethink how certain rules are interpreted so as to avoid potentially unfair advantages to certain teams. Accordingly, I’ve made mid-course corrections to remedy situations that could potentially tip the balance of fairness for the league. So don’t say I didn’t warn ya.
The DraftThe draft will work almost exactly as it did last year. It is a silent, closed auction, where every player is bid upon, with the owner who bids the most winning that player for his team.
Each owner will be start with a budget of
$13,000 (“cap space”) which he may use to draft 13 players (so, an average of $1,000 per player). Each owner may bid only twice for any given player. If there is a tie at any stage of bidding, the owner who submitted his bid first will be given the tie breaker.
Each auction will begin precisely at
11:00AM PST whether or not I’ve posted the official opening of an auction. Each auction will end exactly 24 hours later. So, if I see the time of a bid is even one second past 11:00AM PST, it will be disqualified. Bid will be submitted via email to:
wettengels at yahoo dot com. This year I will not accept bids via Realgm PMs. It just got to be a hassle.
Bidding will work in two stages. In the first stage three new players will be put up for auction. All owners may submit one (1) bid for any or all of the players up for auction via email. I will tally the bids and determine the top three bids for each player. In the 2nd stage, the three owners with the highest bids on each player in the first stage will be posted on the board, and only those three owners will have the opportunity to submit a 2nd bid. All other owners will be out of the 2nd stage for those players. All other bids will remain undisclosed. The winning bidders for each player after the 2nd stage will be posted at the end of the auction.
(Last year there was quite an uprising regarding the fact that I was the only one privy to all bids. Here’s my take. I understand some of you think that gives me an unfair advantage. Fine, but let’s be honest, I finished like 7th or 8th last year, so obviously it wasn’t THAT big of an advantage. And the truth is, I just don’t want to have to bother posting every single bid I ever get. It’s too time consuming. So, if you don’t like it, don’t participate. I guess that’s the best response I can give you.)
Once you have “won” a player, you will then have to edit your team post on the front page of the thread to reflect: 1) the player you won, 2) the amount of the winning bid, and 3) your remaining cap space. It’s a huge hassle for me if you don’t do this, so I’m imposing a penalty for you this you. If you fail to do so within 24 hours of the end of the auction, you will be assessed a $100 penalty. The penalty will grow by $50 per 24 hour period every day thereafter you fail to remedy the situation. This penalty will not apply to owners who simply made a mistake in their math. Other owners are encouraged to police each other and their arithmetic. If an owner is found to be repeatedly guilty of messing up the math of his winning bids, he will be given a $500 penalty. There were just too many screw ups last year, and it was a monstrous headache trying to track down the correct figures, sometimes weeks after the fact. You all own a calculator. Don’t mess up, or you will be penalized!
An owner can bid for as many players as he likes, provided (a) he has sufficient cap space and (b) sufficient roster space. Like last year,
YOU MAY NOT DROP A PLAYER ONCE YOU HAVE DRAFTED HIM UNTIL AFTER THE ENTIRE DRAFT HAS ENDED. So don’t bid on someone if you don’t want him. Once your 13 roster spots are filled, your draft is over and you will not be permitted to make any further bids unless you trade a player away to open up a slot on your roster.
You may only bid up to the amount that you have remaining in your cap space (i.e. if you have $1,500 remaining, you can not bid more than $1,500 on any one player). You can however bid the full amount of your remaining cap space on more than one player at a time. However, the order in which you placed the bids will be determinative of which player you win. In other words, if you have $500 left, and you bid $500 on players A, B and C, in that order, and you end up with the highest bid for player A, your bids for players B and C are automatically voided since your cap space will be gone after having won player A. In that circumstance, the owners with the 2nd highest bids on players B and C will win their respective auctions.
IMPORTANT: All bids which are incorrect, whether they are bids greater than the amount of remaining cap space, or whether you just made a typo and wrote the wrong dollar amount or placed it on the wrong player or in the wrong order, WILL BE FINAL. In other words, if you make a mistake and a bid is voided, that will count as your bid for that stage. If the bid is not voided, and you intended to bid a different amount, or to bid on a different player, too bad. All bids are final, period, end of discussion. There will be no mulligans this year. So proof-read your emails carefully.
Order: Like last year, the order of players will be determined randomly using
www.random.org. I’ll simply use the player rankings from basketball monster, and randomly generate an order. I’ll post the full order so that everyone can see who is coming up next. Rookies will be added to the end of the list and included in the random order. If a player is missing that you think needs to be included, please tell me as soon as possible so that I can make the correction.
My bids: like last year, I’ll send all my bids to WB prior to the opening of any auction so that I don’t benefit from seeing your bids ahead of time. WB will verify that I’ve submitted my picks on time if anyone asks him to. This isn’t ideal, but it’s the best situation I can come up with, so you’ll just have to trust me.
Trades: You may trade as much as you like during and after the draft. Players and money are all free game. You can trade players for other players, for cash, or for a combination of the two. Be as creative as you like. I will have final and sole authority to veto all trades during the draft. For those of you that know me, I tend to allow most trades to go through, unless there is an obvious attempt at cheating, so don’t worry about me vetoing trades just because they appear one-sided. When you make a trade, you are responsible for updating your own roster. You will have 24 hours from the time of the announcement and acceptance of a trade to post it, or you will be assessed the same $100 penalty as specified above, along with the following $50 penalties thereafter. Can you tell I want everyone to update their own darn rosters this year?
End of Draft:After every team has filled its roster, or every team is out of money, or every player still eligible to make bids unanimously agrees to end the draft, the draft will end. The end will not be official until I post it on the board. At that point, the waiver wire is open, and owners are free to make adds and drops as they please.
At the end of the draft, all cap spaces are scuttled, and teams proceed as if in any other league. In other words, the cap space element of this league ends at the end of the draft.
League Rules:This will be a standard category Yahoo fantasy basketball league. The 9 categories are: FG%, FT%, Threes, Pts, Rbds, Asts, Stls, Blks and TOs.
The teams will have
13 players each. The rosters will have the following positions to fill:
PG
SG
G
G
PF
SF
F
F
C
C
Bench
Bench
Bench
The rosters will be updated daily. The trade deadline will be the last available deadline Yahoo permits. There will be no limit to adds and drops, nor will there be any waiver period.
Trades during the season will be subject to league vote. In order to trigger a vote, at least 4 players (not including those involved with the trade) must express a desire to submit the trade to a vote. I will open up a 24 hour window for league voting. It will require the vote of 6 managers to veto any trade (not including myself or the managers involved in the trade). So, it takes 6 of 11 to veto. The number it takes to veto is subject to change pending league activity levels. I will have final authority on all vetoes. Typically, that just means I’ll automatically veto a trade if I feel there is sufficient evidence of collusion or cheating.
If I’ve left something out, of if there are rule modifications, I will post the changes at the top of this post in red, so please check back to see if I’ve made any changes.
Thanks, and good luck.
