BWW Money League - Team Previews / Predictions

Post#1 » by writersblock » Sun Sep 27, 2009 10:58 pm

So, here's my first season preview...and since 1) his team is done and 2) his team is the first listed on the 1st page of the league thread....

BWW -

Guards: Solid, he's got underrated and unheralded PGs, who are strong in 3s and should put up a good FG%. I'd normally be wary of Kidd's %s, but with so many offensive guys in Dallas now, I can't see him shooting enough to worry about it. His assists could be average, though Kidd should shore him up fine. As for his SGs/Gs This is the normal BWW team...high FG%, high 3s, he should own both categories throughout the season. His only knock is that he's got some aging veterans, but that's always been his knock, and it hasn't mattered much.

Forwards: Again, the classic BWW team: underrated and even aging guys, but I think all will have fairly solid years. His boards might not be the strongest, but he's got enough to keep him competitive. He's also got at least one unknown, like Ariza. I personally think he'll do quite well, but I think his efficiency might suffer with his new role.

Center: This is an odd Center lot...Camby and Przybilla--they're on BWW's teams every year (I'm serious, check his teams). But Okur and Harrington? They aren't traditional BWW centers...they focus on 3s and points, not on boards or blocks...but I have to say, it might make him all the more dangerous.

In the end, I think BWW dominates in 3s, FG%, and does well enough to contend in blocks, assists, points, and maybe boards and FT%. TOs might be his main (only?) downfall.

Prediction: Top 5, and barring injuries, championship contender.

Top Bidding Deals: Ariza for $3?? Przybilla for $1??? Even JKidd and Ray Allen for $30 together...these are some shrewd deals. Let's just say this, would you rather have Ray Allen and Jason Kidd, or would you rather have Dirk Nowitzki (who's going for 30+)? I'd go with the former. Przybilla for $1 could be the steal of the draft...

Second up, it's...

AlciG

Quick overview: The winner of the Lebron sweepstakes, dishing out one of the highest amounts for one player ($45)...the question is, will it work? Truth be told, it's hard to make heads or tails of Alci's team. The Allen Iverson signing was a bit bad timed, otherwise, he could have gotten AI for $2, but other guys, he made shrewd deals.

Guards: I actually think he has a somewhat underrated, but potentially formidable guard line-up, especially if AI plays with a chip on his shoulder. I have to say, Felton for $3 could very well be the steal deal of the draft. He also went out and got the entire set of shooting guards in Golden State...which frankly, may be the only safe bet with Nellie coaching. (Honestly, that coach drives me mad  ). Overall though, I think his guards are about average. I don't see any superior guard strengths (like assists for PGs or 3s/points for Gs), and that could be a thorn in his side. I'm not counting him out just yet though.

Forwards: Lebron and Gerald Wallace - almost half of his cap - that's a hefty price to pay, but I'm a GWallace fan, so I think it'll work out for him. And, isn't Lebron supposed to have a breakout season this year? 8-) Seriously though, his forwards have great name value, but I don't know how well they mesh...if that even matters. Jason Thompson will be Alci's main, if not only, source of of boards (Bynum and Shaq being the only other board guys)...and that's a lot riding on a sophomore. I have to say, I don't see it working out.

Centers: I already said it above, but I think his C position is a bit weak. That being said, he probably has the most Cs (4, maybe 5), and if Frye turns out to be as good as people are saying, he could be fine. I still think it could be his weak spot.

In the end, I think Alci could easily win out in points, and maybe threes. If his 4 Centers work out for him, he could easily win in blocks and boards...but the juries out on that one. He's about average or maybe below average in everything else.

Prediction: Top 10, maybe a playoff berth. I'd put him at about 8 though.

Top Bidding Deals: : For Alci, I think $45 for Lebron was probably a league worst, and $23 for Gerald Wallace was too high, but only $3 for Raymond Felton? Now that's a steal. Could be the steal of the draft...

for those following along at home, that's two steals of the draft so far: Felton ($3) and Przybilla ($1)

Next up: Fraancisco...Fraancisco (that's fun to say) Fraancisco

Fraan

In fairness, Fraan's team is a work in progress. After all, he spent all of his money and ended up with 3 open roster spots, and in a league like this, having an extra roster spot or two can be helpful. Three open spots though? That could be detrimental, and considering the depth of other teams, I think Fraan will come to regret his deep pockets.

Guards: Let's face it. Fraan's not going to win assists...or points for that matter. His guards are good, don't get me wrong, but they may hurt him in more ways than help him. His threes will be solid, and just based on his guard rotation, he could be very, very competitive in 3s, but I wonder what else his guard rotation will do besides bring down his FG%, TOs, and only provide him average points and assists in return. His steals could be above average, but besides that...all he's getting is 3s from his guards. And that might not be enough.

Forwards: His Forward line up is pretty solid. Lots of points, lots of boards. Blocks won't be a strong suit, nor will his FT%. I'd like to see more passing out of his big men, considering his potentially below average assists. But all in all, I think his forwards are a solid line up. They should also shore up his FG%, as they all shoot quite a bit and shoot well. It may be just enough to make him somewhat competitive.

Center Horford and Duncan. Not a bad match up. But I do think he paid too much for Duncan. The guy is an aging center, and playing on a team that will surely make the playoffs, even if Duncan takes a night or two off....each week. Plus, Duncan's numbers don't have to be stellar this year with the Spurs' new roster. In short, Duncan will get his, like he always does, but not as much as he used to, and shelling out $23 for him....that's a bit too much. I would rather have Gerald Wallace for the same price.

Overall...Fraan has built a fairly good team, though he doesn't have enough to compete with the "big boys" in this league. I think he could make the playoffs, if he plays his cards right and picks up the right waiver guys...and chances are, he will. But for now, I can't see Fraan breaking the top 6 without a waiver wire golden nugget.

Prediction: Finishing 7-9, consolation championship winner.

Top Bidding Deals: Hard to see many deals here, since Fraan plaid over $10 for just about everyone. I do think that Baron Davis for only $9 could be a good deal, provided he plays healthy and motivated, and SEssions for only $6 was a nice win as well. But Guys like Eric Gordon for $12 and Duncan for $23...I wasn't as fond of.

Next up: TBD...probably my team or 3Si's, since no one else is done drafting yet

Except...you're not going to get all those waiver guys. Remember, we all have a chance, thanks to waiver priority. You might get one or two...but that's it.

I've also got to take up a beef with you about your comment on Duncan...He and Parker are the only guys who will get points? Manu's healthy. Richard Jefferson only plays offense. Add in role guys like Roger Mason and McDyess...I doubt that they need Duncan to score more than 20 a game.

The official draft is over...here are more team predictions/previews.

A quick note: I'll do an update after the supplemental draft, if necessary.

Next up:
Sacstar

At first glance, I have to say I'd like Sacstar's team...in a 20 team league. I think 4 of his guys should be perennial waiver guys in THIS league: Duhon, Jack, Wallace, and Landry. However, that's not to say that Sacstar isn't competitive.

Guards: Calderon, Ginobili, Duhon, Salmons, with Jack for support. That's not going to win you a lot of guard categories. I think individually, they're all solid, but I don't think they'll work well together statistically on his team.

Forwards: One word: solid. I think he's got the best forward lineup in the league. In fact, his Forwards are his bread and butter. They'll give him major advantages in FG%, boards, and will help him in the points category as well. With most of his firepower from the Forward spot, he'll also have a major advantage in TOs.

Centers: His Cs leave a bit to be desired. Hawes is a budding talent, yes. So is Noah. But together, they don't provide much. FG% isn't great for Hawes. Blocks aren't great for either. And you'd like to see at least one C with double-digit boards. I don't expect Landry, an undersized C, or Big Ben to make up the difference either.

Overall: Sacstar is riding on his Forwards to make the playoffs. And to his credit, it's a pretty potent lot. I think Villanueva will have a bounce back year. Al Jefferson should be even better. And when Boozer is shipped out of town, gets injured, or finds himself riding the pine (whichever happens first), Millsapp will be a major contributor. The question is whether he's got enough power outside of his Forwards to win it all. I don't think he does. He's got great %s, TOs, and even boards, but nothing else is that strong. He's going to struggle in 3s, points, assists, steals, and banking that your %s will be there everytime is a bit risky.

Prediction: 8-10. I think he has a chance to make the playoffs, only because the gap between the haves and havenots is pretty big, and he falls closer to the haves than the havenots.

Top Bidding Deals: He's not going to regret getting Villanueva for $6. Hawes and Noah for a combined $16 ain't half bad either. I don't think his cheapies will pay off for him though. Big Ben, Landry, Duhon really are waiver guys in this league. Millsapp was probably too much at $12, since he isn't starting yet, but in the end, I think he'll be worth closer to $18, so that's not a bad deal in the long term.

Draft Done. Time for the rest of the previews. Next up:

3si

Two weeks ago, 3Si called his team a work in progress, then threatened to leave the league on principles, then made a deal securing him one of the top 3 supplemental draft guys (Tony Parker), and now...where will his team go from there....

Guards: Parker, Martin, Bibby, Redd, Harden - In name, 3Si has one of the strongest guard groups in the league, and I trust they'll provide quite a bit to his weekly stats, but I wonder how they'll match up together. On the one hand, you've got instant scoring, and that's his guard strong suit. But the %s worry me. Redd and Parker should do nicely, but Martin, Bibby, and Harden will subtract from that (especially Martin with his double digit heaves). He doesn't have a dominant assist guy, either, with just 2 real pgs on the roster. So, what will he get from these guys: a lot of 3s (though Parker and his 3-point aversion is an interesting addition), points, and modest steals, assists.

Forwards: Diaw, Carter, Pierce, Jefferson, and Hill, with Dunleavy waiting in the wings. Not a bad lot. I think he'll find himself dropping dunleavy before he has a chance to put up any numbers, but that group is going to be solid on all around numbers. Lots of 3s, points, even assists. In other words, combined with his guards, he's going to be dominant in guard stats. He's peculiarly shy on the boards and blocks.

Centers: Boozer. That's it. Boozer. And he's not even a real Center. Last year, 3si Boasted 6 centers in the FFL league. This year, he's made sure he has NONE. Truth be told, I don't put a lot of value in building a Center dominant team, but you've got to at least have one, and I'd recommend a center who's a passer, a glue guy, who can put it all together. Not many 3point shooting, assist, centers are available. He may just want a high shooting high FG% guy.

All in all, 3si's team is built on guard stats. That's it. All guard stats. All the time. He's going to fail miserably in boards, and blocks, but he should come out on top in points, 3s, steals. His weak point could be his %s, but his Achilles Heal will be TOs.

Prediction: In spite of issues, he's at least got the name value to be top 6, for whatever that's worth. And, I think, in the end, he'll end up as a playoff contender, in the 3-6 range.

Top Bidding Deals: Grant Hill $3. That's got to be one of the steals of the draft, especially with a guy like Haywood going for $10 (or was it more?) He also gets special kudos for never spending more than $20 on anyone. I will say this though, he may regret buying Dunleavy for $5, especially if it turns out he's out of the picture for as long as some people are saying (Don't you hate the phras "out indefinitely?" I do.)

Thought you were going to "do me" last. I have the big Z now, I'm saved!!! Diaw not being C eligible screwed me up big time... Very accurate prediction, my thoughts are very similar. Your Dunleavy comment was exactly what I have been thinking for the past few days. I do regret picking him up not knowing he wouldn't be back until late Nov,Dec. However, I'm not going to drop him. Just have to stash him in IL after a week or so. To sum it up, I just wasn't prepared enough. I didn't have a real plan, just bid for players I felt that was decent in value. My Harden and Dunleavy picks were pretty bad. Objectively speaking, I really don't see my team as a top 6 contender.

Ok...next up: INSFO

I have to say, that Insfo's team is probably one of the leading teams in the league. I like his main pieces, at the Guard, he's got the top PG, he's got one of the top talents at his forward position, and the Center is manned by one of the top Cs in the league, and he's got some great role-players that should fit nicely.

Guards: How can you scoff at a team with Chris Paul? He rounds out his guards with some good talent, though there are question marks. I like Flynn, and I think he'll get great run in Minnesota this year. I think Foye could be a real break-out candidate this year, if he can grab starting SG honors. He's also got JR Smith, Rush, and Anthony Parker as backup guards. All in all, he's not going to dominate in any one guard stat, but I think he'll be solid enough to win assists, steals, and threes any given week, and his %s aren't half bad either.

Forwards: Josh Howard and Caron Butler. I think these two guys will more than ably carry his team, providing they stay healthy. And that's a huge question mark. If INSFO doesn't take the league championship, it will be because of injuries to Howard and/or Butler. If they do stay healthy, however, they'll provide great numbers in points, threes, and some help in the board area. %s will be good too. I also like his choice of Randolph and Wright as the role players. Both are slated to have a breakout year (though, if injuries hit his top 2, he'll NEED them to have a breakout year)

Centers: Pau Gasol, David Lee, Andray Blatche. I have to say, I li ke what he's done here too. He's picked up some of the top Cs in teh league, without sacrificing FT%. Combined with the rest of his team, his blocks may not be dominant, nor will his boards stand out, but they'll be enough to win any given night. Andre Blatche will probably have a great year thanks to the Haywood injury.

Prediction: Top 3, championship contender. no doubt. This team should be called "the Any Given Nighters" because he's not dominant to defeat everyone every week, but he's got enough to carry him all the way to the championship.

Bidding Deals. nothing really stands out here, as he paid fair to more than fair value on each of his players. Chris Paul for $37 will at least make the owner of Lebron blush, but that's fair value.Flynn for $1 could be a steal, and Smith for $6 could be good too, but not enough to call them steals of the draft.

Next up: JFrost

By name, JFrost has a fairly solid team, in fact, probably one of the best. I mean, just looking at his team and seeing Nash, Melo, Stoudemire, Rasheed, Deng, and so on...it looks good on paper. Let's see how he may actually stack up:

Guards: Let's get this out right now...JFrost will beat everyone in assists...as long as Andre Miller starts in Portland. He's also got great %s from his guard spot. What he's not going to get from his guards are 3s and steals.

Forwards: Deng, Melo, Beasley, Green, with a side of Peja. I have to say, his forwards are a bit overrated. I have never liked Deng because, though he can score, he does little else to help a fantasy team. He gets modest boards, and ok %s, but that's about it. Melo has a similar problem, though he can REALLY score. Also, consider this: Beasley is a mental mess, and Peja is a shell of the shell of his former self. This leaves JFrost with forwards who can score, and that's about it...with the exception of Green. I think he'll be a monster this year, a double-double threat, and he may keep JFrost afloat in the categories where he's lacking (like boards, 3s).

Centers: Rasheed, Amare, and Kevin Love. What will they get you? Points and boards. Sheed will be good for the 3, but let's not forget that he really sucked last year (compared to other years). He's now playing on a stacked team...will he need the numbers? Probably not. But he'll still put up better than average numbers for a C in 3s.

The extras: Dalembert, Galinari, and Augustin. Each one is poised to have a better year than last year...but each one is completely unproven and I have my doubts. What they will give him: a little boost in 3s, assists, and boards. But in a 14 team league, I just don't think these guys are exactly worth a roster spot.

Overall: JFrost will be strong in points, assists, and post some good %s. His boards will be average to above average, but his 3s, steals, and blocks will be lacking. His TOs? Forget about it. He'll lead the league in most TOs.

Prediction: I think he'll be top 10, perhaps even make the playoffs. But for now, 9 or 10.

Bidding Deals: Only one bid really stands out here: Jeff Green $6. Here's a guy who is ready to take a huge leap into the top 25 fantasy list, and even if he's top 50, $6 is a GREAT deal. Perhaps one of the best deals this season. In other notes, I don't like Peja for 6 or Dalembert for 7, but I can live with them.

Re: BWW Money League - Team Previews / Predictions

Post#17 » by writersblock » Fri Oct 16, 2009 8:35 pm

So, here's the deal, I don't have time to give everyone a full preview, so I thought I'd just cut to the chase. Here's the rankings, as I see it, for the league, at this point:

1. WB: Usually I poo-poo my teams and hope for the best, but I like my chances this year. Two top 10 players (Kobe and Granger), and a supporting cast that aren't too many steps behind them. My team will dominate in points, without taking much of a hit in %s, in fact, I should dominate in FT%, even with Okafor. If Devin HArris' team figures out how to take a pass from him, I'll dominate in TOs too. One of my weaknesses might be assists, but I have enough all around guys to make up for a lack there. My blocks suck, and my boards are about average. Yeah, I know this is putting a target on my back: but there it is. Take aim fellas.
2.Masta: Strengths at the poles, is what Masta has. He's got the best point guard combo in the league, provided they both stay healthy. His Forwards are either really good or really bad. I don't see guys like Collison and Magette doing much for him, but I like Aldridge, and I think AK47 could have a better year. One thing to keep in mind, only ONE guy on his team did not average double digit points last year. Food for thought.
3.Hyugga: Solid team.Simply solid...that is, provided the Cs don't go light with KG. If they do, then Hyugga will struggle to make the playoffs. Problem is, I think that the Cs will urge KG to take it easy half the season. they brought in Rasheed to an already strong mix, and I can see KG putting up pedestrian numbers when Hyugga needs dominant numbers. Still, he has enough to just make the playoffs.
4. BWW: Same BWW team we see in every league. I don't think he'll get the same result he's been getting though. He's got some old guys, some big question marks, and some injury-prone guys. At least one of those 3 factors is going to hurt him. Though, on paper, he looks dominant. his %s are second to none (which may help him, and which I think will keep him in the playoff hunt), and every where else, he's at least average. I just don't think he has enough firepower to win it all, frankly.
5.Jfrost: Above average team, top to bottom. I've already done an extensive write up of JFrost's team, but I will say this, his team will score, rebound, and put up above average assists, but what else will they do? Hard to tell.
6.Insfo: Best fantasy player in the league, but oddly, he didn't go out and try to compliment Paul's strengths. Instead, he picked up a rookie PG, and filled his team with guys who may or may not be their team's leading scorer, and who put up modest stats otherwise. I do think it's odd that he's got a team that could be the best TO team in the league.
7. Rsam: Probably the team to watch out for. He's got some solid guys who should win him assists and 3s every week. Everything else, though, is a bit up in the air. HIs boards aren't that great. his points are above average, and could be dominant, but there's a lot of question marks, including guys like Rudy, Brand, and Tyreke.
8.Woody: Prior to the Fran Garcia injury (thank you woody for taking him off my hands), I would have said that Woody was top 4 or 5. Without Fran, I think he drops out of the playoffs, but the fact that he's still at 8 here says a lot for his team. He's got as good a guard lineup as anyone else. He's going to dominate in assists and steals. His 3s aren't that great though, and any time you've got not one but 2 guys who could easily average 3 TOs a game (Wade, Smith), you're in trouble.
9.Fraan: Normal fraan team, normal overrated players, normal risk taking on young guys who made a splash the year before. Normal love affair with guys who will probably end up hurting him in the end (Tim Duncan, and his declining minutes this year, Marvin Williams and his still unfulfilled potential, Al Horford and another year expecting him to be a monster, only to have him come up short...again, the list goes on). I think Fraan will end up being the best of the least though.
10. AlciG: Overpaid for Lebron, filled his team with a bunch of guys who may or may not do enough to make an impact. On the other hand, this may also be the worst his team could do. If Iverson works out for Memphis, Conley figures out how to put up a solid line ALL year, Don Nelson figures out how to use Kellena Azubuike and Stephen Curry, Shaq doesn't take half the year off, and Gerald Wallace figures out how to be healthy, he'll make the playoffs. Otherwise...not.
11. Skai: Another team that can score. But what else will they do? Hard to tell. He could be the dominant blocks team, but his players come with a lot of question marks. McGrady, JO, Yi, Gay...these are some important cogs that may very well have another hugely disappointing season.
12. 3si: Yet another points and 3s team. It seems like these two stats are the league commodity...and I wonder where else 3si plans to compete. Blocks? no. TOs? probably not. %s? No. Boards? Definitely not. Well...at least he'll make the consolation playoffs.
13.Sacstar: Too little talent, not enough firepower, and frankly, too many guys who don't deserve a roster spot in a small league like this. Jack, Moon, Duhon, and Outlaw may spell doom for Sac. I'll also throw in my own lack of trust in a guy like Villanueva. He's done next to nothing for almost 2 years now, and he couldn't even get ahead of Luc Richard Mbah a Moute in the rotation half the year last year.
14. TK: The guy doesn't even have a full roster. What can I say? I predict that by December, he will have traded his two top guys for peanuts, or we'll be locking

Now that the rankings are out of the way, here's my thoughts on the bidding:

Top Bidding Deals:
Ariza $3 (Bww) - I think Ariza takes the big leap this year...or the big plunge, but either way, 3 bucks is hardly a risk.
Kmart $6 (BWW) - Most underrated fantasy guy, and at $6, it's apparent he's still underrated.
Gomes $2 (WB) - Here's a forward who is young and had a solid season last year...he'll do better than most guys bought for 6-7.
Kirilenko 5 (Masta): I think AK47 may have his best year this year, especially with the injury to CJ Miles.
Nate Robinson $4 (Hyugga): You can't argue with a guy who was top 60 OFF THE BENCH, buying him for only $4...classic.
Kaman $4 (Woody): honorable mention for taking a small gamble on a guy who should have a great year...if he stays healthy (sound familiar?)
Shag: $4 (AlciG). You can't go wrong with a double double candidate for only $4...even if he is 45 years old.
Grant Hill: $3: Underrated, horribly underrated, but I'd take Hill over at least 85% of the guys bought for $8-$10.

Worst Bidding Deals:
Collison: 3 (Masta): I don't think he'll even be good enough for a roster spot.
Chalmers 11 (Fran). When ariza and Kmart go for 9, altogether, you have to wonder if Chalmers is worth both of them. I don't think so.
Duncan $23 (Fran): Too much for a guy who'll probably take a big step backward this year with less minutes.
Smith: 21 (woody): Jsmoove is too much of a liability in %s and TOs to be worth that much dough.
Iverson: $12 (Alci): When Iverson was being picked up in the late 180s of Realgm Drafts, I can't imagine Iverson being worth that much.
Jarrett Jack $6: (Sacstar). I don't think this guy will even be worth a roster spot...and yet Sac pays $6 for him. I just don't see it working out. If he had paid $1 or $2...then I'd be ok with this...but when guys who are starting go for half that price? Gotta shake your head.

Aww I was looking towards a full review.

I tend to agree, if I had started out at the same time as everyone I would have made my team a little more focused, but I had to make due with what I had and what was left available.
