To me he'd already surpassed Sampras but this win just makes it that much more obvious.

to Murray. He took a huge step forward with this final. Was competitive, just came up short against a complete game from the GOAT today.

Murray is taking this really hard, but that's to be expected. I really hope he does go on to win Wimbledon at some point.

Awww crap. Andy getting so emotional during his speech got me teary eyed.

As much as I'm happy for Roger getting his 17th, I kinda wish Andy won this now just so he could get this off his back once and for all. Even if Andy never won Wimbledon again, it would probably be ok because he won it once and that's all that matters.

Yep. It's very tough on him due to the british press and desperation. Didn't think he would cry again but it's good that he's emotional.

That was like mid 2000s Fed with him calmly having all the time in the world to pull out his winners and craft his points. Definitely haven't seen that in a while.

It's been consensus for a while now, but this tourney run does a few important things:

1) He's now had the GOAT career at Wimbledon over Sampras. Still debatable who was better, but Fed's accomplished more. I'm also inclined to side with Fed because I think the move away from serve & volley en masse was done with good reason. Fed serves about as hard as Sampras did, and while Sampras was the master at placement, it's hard to swallow the idea that Fed isn't right around the same level. Serves just don't dominate Wimbledon like they used to, and I'd say it's primarily because returners have grown up dealing with these supersonic balls and can do more than just get them back...which makes serve & volley tough.

I will say though: The very thing that gave Fed a slight extra edge in the last two matches (slick grass), would have helped Sampras' serve & volley game even more. I think in those conditions Pete beats Roger more than half the time despite the fact that he'd have had the same balance issues Djokovic and Murray had, but Federer (and Nadal) don't.

2) It's a huge pre-emptive slap against serious arguments for Nadal or Djokovic as future GOATs over Federer. This is Fed's 2nd comeback to #1, and this time there is no injury caveat from the guy he surpasses. Federer is without question unable able to play as consistently flawlessly as he did at his best 5-6 years ago, and yet here he is standing in the top spot during Nadal & Djokovic's career sweet spots? Unreal. I thought Fed could win another slam, but I'm really thrown for a loop that he's #1. The more I think about it, the more it blows me away.

Also to reiterate: I don't consider Fed the best player in the world at this point (Djokovic has that honor until I conclude he won't return to early 2011 form), but consider his performance over the past 12 months. Some perspective, in that time, here are the records for the 3 top dogs:

Federer, 72-9, 8 titles done on all 3 surfaces, 1 major, 1 WTF, 3 Masters
Djokovic, 63-12, 4 titles done only on hard court, 2 major, 0 WTF, 2 Masters
Nadal, 58-13, 4 titles done only on clay, 1 major, 0 WTF, 2 Masters

There's just no reasonable way to say that Federer hasn't been right there with the other two, and again, he's half a decade removed from what should normally be considered anyone's prime (and as I said, his best in that time WAS better than now even if on days like these he regains the old magic).

Federer might be the GOAT for a very long time my friends. Enjoy it.

My feeling as well. This was a case that I'd be both happy and sad no matter what happened. I won't pretend that I'm not thrilled to see Federer complete this epic come back, but Murray winning Wimbledon would have been so, so wonderful.

I'm going to be satisfied if Murray can just get 1 major in his career, but it would be so fantastic to see a Scotsman be the one to end Britain's drought.

We can be pleased at least for that. There are going to be some jerks who call Murray a choker no matter what, but if you were watching this objectively, you saw tremendous nerve in those long rallies (which to me is the most choke-inducing part of tennis).

Yesterday Federer reminded everyone that he is the easily the Greatest Player of all time..
At his 31 still he has something to say..In the Djokovic-Nadal era Roger is out of his prime but he is still here...

As far as adding to 17 it's no given but the more I think about it the more I realize that it really hurts. Being the 3 seed in this Big 3 era. It means you have to beat the other two every time things go normal. Now Fed may have an easier path. Also if you believe Rafa is in his head to some degree well he's probably going to get to play at least one major where he won't have to play Rafa unless Rafa beats Nola.
