Djokovic's 2011: 64-2 after US

Post#1 » by Doctor MJ » Mon May 9, 2011 4:27 am

It is freaking May, and Djokovic still hasn't lost.

The man is 32-0. Cljsters only won 40 matches in all of last year, Serena only 25, and they contended for Player of the Year.

Won 6 tournaments - more than he's ever won in a year.
Won 3 Masters - more than he's ever won in a year
Won the Aussie of course

Now he's beaten Nadal on clay (on his 3rd Master' title) to go 3-0 against Nadal for the year.

What happens next?
Think he can finish at #1 this year?
Think he can keep beating Nadal on clay?

All I got to say is. atleast he has made tennis interesting after the semi fall of federer.
I think the french open will tell us alot.
But if he beats him there then wow.
I still have nadal winning french and wimbledon.

Yup. Amazing. 37-0 to start the year, 4-0 against Nadal. If he takes the French, there's serious danger of Novak having the GOAT year this year.

That would be hilarious given all of our debates between Fed & Rafa.

My thoughts exactly. Djokovic's level is pretty scary right now.

13-0 against top 10 players
4-0 against nadal
3-0 against Federer
37-0 so far to start the season.

Best start to a tennis season was 43-0 by John Mcenroe.

I read in the wall street journal that he credits most of his success to going gluten free in his diet.

It's a hell of a streak. I think it helped that no one cared about it or noticed for so long though.

It's clear how beneficial the lifestyle changes have been to all of this being possible. Still has a long way to go mentally.

Updating this after Wimbledon. We now really have to start contemplating Djokovic among the greats.

Below is a table of the best match records going back to 1973. I've listed all seasons with a winning percentage above 90, and additional players with a season above 85.

Surely any player that won grandslams on two different surfaces will surface into the top 10 all time discussions. Djokovic I'm sure will win more and make a good case for himself as the 3rd best player of this generation right behind Federer and Nadal.

His fitness has definitely improved since his diet change and he is close to Nadal's court coverage on his good days.

Djokovic wins the Rogers Cup and is now 53-1 for the year including 5 Masters titles in 5 attempts, with the possibility of winning 3 more by season's end. The previous record was 4.

This could be the greatest season in history.

He had to retire against Murray, but he's felt off his game and bothered injury/energy wise since the Roger's Cup Final IMO. The only reason he beat Fish was confidence and guts

That's a real shame and I hope he doesn't come into US open at less than 100%. He really deserves a good crack at another grandslam in the form and mood he is in.

Co-signed. Of course, I never want anyone to have injury problems, but he's played so damn well this year it'd be a huge let down if we didn't get to see him try to finish it off in top form.

So there we have it. Novak wins the US and officially has one of the greatest seasons of all time.

To me he's still got a finish strong if he wants a shot at GOAT season status, but he's certainly been better this year than recent stars Sampras, Agassi, or Nadal ever were.
