Wimbledon ofcourse is the slam that everyone cherishes the most and US open probably is the slam that most players don't enjoy. IIRC even the men's semi finals at flushing meadows in NY were not sold out last year and most players were disappointed with that and the fact that its the last of the slams and the 2nd one on hard court makes it tougher for players already battling injuries to participate and the atmosphere at the Aus open really outguns the US slam.

yeah, i agree that wimbledon is the most coveted of them all.

i think the "worst" could be us open or roland garros. us open because it's the last one, many players have had a loooong season previous to that and could not get in their best shape.

roland garros because of the surface.

and the australian open could be important because it's the first of the year and could set some sort of pattern for the year to come.

Wimbledon, obviously. But the US Open is the best one for us as fans to watch.

whats wrong with the surface? the best points and matches are always in clay, the slowest surface. You can see players really playing tennis, not a competition of who bang stronger the ball. In fact, Wimblendon this year was beautiful because the court was slower than ever and we could see great matches (specially the final) with long points, not the boring "serve and volley" usual over grass

Wimbledon for its history and prestige ! Also the grass makes it look even more entertaining and beautiful. Because of the amount of great games played here in the past. Because of its pure english atmosphere and all white uniforms ! It looks different, not like every other Grand Slam.

Then it goes Australian Open because it's first, also with great atmosphere and 5 set thriller games every year ! Rod Laver Arena is the most beautiful of all Grand Slam arenas because mostly of its atmosphere and always sell-out crowds ! That's beautiful and unforgettable !

3rd. Rolland Garros - it's clay ! Long rallies, slicing, French atmosphere, defensive plays used more, patience and Rafa Nadal !

4th. US Open - nothing special, I'm afraid !

I agree that Wimbledon is first for sure. But US Open 4th? :o No way!!

I would rank it as follows:

1. Wimbledon
2. Tie Aussie/US
3. French

After Wimbledon, the Aussie seems to be the most fun and I would give it a tie with the US Open because of the night tennis. Man how many great matches happened late at night in New York that go beyond midnight that were so awesome?

The French on the otherhand seems to produce the worst tennis and definitely some of the worst finals in recent history.

French open pays the highest prize money and brings out new talent every time so I wouldn't rate it at the last position. US open in NY is great but not even the semi finals have been sold outs for the last 3-4 years there.

The French doesn't always sell out either. But mainly for me the French is worst simply because the tennis isn't all that great usually. I guess it could be the surface, but whatever the case most matches are rather mehhh there.

Also part of the reason why the US Open doesn't sell out usually at least for the main stadium is because its so f*cking BIG!! A 24,000+ seat stadium, how you ever going to fill that up most days? The American fascination with having the biggest means that only at the finals is the main stadium ever filled. Compare that to Centre Court at Wimbledon that holds just shy of 14,000. Not only does that mean its more likely to be always packed, but also it makes for a intimate setting with plenty of atmosphere.

But even despite this, just the night tennis alone makes up for it and to me makes it a better tournament than the French.

You mean you don't like all the five setters and all the upsets? French open gives more of a chance to the finesse players and longer rallys than the faster courts where you could get away with having a powerful serve and a decent volley game. You need to make winners and work angles for shots if you want to win on clay and I definitely love that as a fan.

Night tennis is great but I just feel tennis is not as much appreciated in the US as it is in Europe. May be the lack of a big American player since Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi has something to do about it but the general enthusiasm isn't as good as it used to be.

Wimbledon is definitely #1.

Then in general I'd say: US Open, Roland Garros, Australian

Roland Garros is tough to rate because it's on clay. Where does it look best? When Federer was trying to complete the Slam, it was *the* event of the year. Worst? When someone wins their first slam, I take them far less seriously if its the French than if its the other majors.

As far as US vs Australian, that's US in a landslide. The US is older, in a more major market, and the Australian is only truly important because of the promotion of the quartet of majors.

The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon have developed from the garden party atmosphere of the first meeting in 1877, witnessed by a few hundred spectators, to a highly professional tournament attracting an attendance of almost half a million people, and through the press, radio and television a following of millions throughout the world.

Wimbledon is still the cream of the crop even though they ruined it's legacy by slowing the grass. Now even moonballers can take the damn title, a bit sad.
