Was kinda surprised that the US Open is starting today.

Yesterday the olympics finish then the next day tennis in New York starts. After two weeks of great games in Beijing and now two weeks of tennis, awesome!

I guess Nadal and maybe Novak are the favorites to win this time around. After the year Federer has had, I don't have much hope that he can turn things around and win the US Open. I also think Roger should play more doubles tennis as he looked really good in Beijing. And when he plays doubles, it seems like his head is in it more and his concentration is better compared to him playing singles.

wow, a tough game for nadal, i think he was too relaxed.

i hope federer can have a decent last grand slam of the year, i think for him it's good if he gets to the final and of course better if he wins it.

nadal won gold in a hard court, but playing the us open is something completely different (demonstrated in his 1st match), lets see how ready he is.

If Federer had won Wimbledon, I would give him a chance at winning the US, but after he lost in London, he hasn't been the same until winning doubles in Beijing. At least that's something. Hope he can build on that.

Also this is why I love the US Open, night tennis! Young/Blake was a great match for opening night!

Boy, the US Open snuck up on me. Had no idea it started directly after the Olympics.

Moving on, late night tennis is one of the best sporting events of the year.

Well, Federer kicked butt in round one, but his opponent was ranked around #100. Looks like the same for the second round, then he might get a test if he meets Stepanek as projected (who has beaten him this year).

I hope he gets back on track - Nadal finally grabbing #1 is great for tennis (and this comes from a Federer fan), but what would be even greater is if they can go back and forth fighting for it over the next few years, with Djokovic and maybe another guy or two thrown into the mix.

yeah, winning it and losing it would be a good thing for tennis for both the athelets and the fans.

i think nadal will feel the preassure federer had for the last 5 years (well 4 1/2) and lets see how he manages it. federer i think will be more relaxed and in fact it could help him to get his game back.

this us open could be the most interesting tournament of the year.

if federer wins it, what happens to the ranking?

I'm not a fan of Henin, but at least she was a solid #1 player in the world, unlike everyone else now. Maybe Serena or Venus or Maria can be a better #1 than Ana or Jankovic.

it could be the biggest upset ever.

Watched Andy Roddick's game yesterday and not surprisingly enough, he's mentally still the player that he was 3 years ago. very fragile and he need a break down in Gulbis' game to get that win. How he managed to give a 3-18 advantage to his opponent in the first set is beyond me for someone who wants to get pencilled in as a serious contender at every tournament.

Ivanovic is not a solid #1, Sharapova should be number one, but the injuries hold her out of competition for a while

Blake was dominated by Mardy Fish last night. That match was in so little question after the first set.

federer looks real good, he seems more confident and has shown some of the moves that were missing during the whole year.

i don't know about sharapova being a more solid #1, honeslty WTP has been kind of weak and i could only think of henin as a player capable of keeping #1 for a long period of time and by keep winning tournaments.

Is anybody else the slightest bit uncomfortable that Andy Roddick is still alive in this tourney?

well, he's playing fernando gonzález, so this could be the end of roddick.

and in the youth us open mexican césar "tiburón" martínez is still alive in both doubles and singles, i hope he does well.

I don't want to endanger his chances but Roddick is definitely playing his best tennis in quite a while. Knocking out Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets in such a clinical performance while Federer and Djokovic had to put out all they had to get into the quarters is quite admirable.

Davydenko on the other hand is the latest victim of qualifier, Giles Muller, who's Cinderella run pits him up against Roger Federer in the round of 8.

yeah i thought the roddick-gonzález match was going to 5 and federer and djokovic winning in straight sets.
but i will say that murray-nadal and djokovic-federer for semifinals.

for women jankovic-dementieva is already set, good match.

The Williams sister played an amazing game again today. Man 17 times they play against each other and rarely disappoint. Two straight tie breakers and the second tie breaker produced some of Serena's best tennis ever.

Fish had all the confidence in the world in the 1st set and lost it all in the 2nd set.

Novak pnwed!
