Clippers Will Take Cardinal...

Post#1 » by loflin3hree5ive » Thu Mar 20, 2008 6:47 pm

Clippers Get:
Brian Cardinal
Kyle Lowry

Grizzlies Get:
Tim Thomas
2009 2nd Round Pick

Thomas is at least is moveable compared to Cardinal. You can probably at least shed a year off his deal by trading him to a contendor during next season. The 2009 2nd round pick is another decent asset. I'd understand if you don't like that deal enough to move Lowry, but considering Tim Thomas' brilliant reputation among west powerhouses, the trade might be better than it looks on paper.

yuck......

we lose a quality rotation player (and possibly our best current PG) in order to swap cardinal sitting the bench for tim thomas sitting the bench.....

ugh.....and on top of that, we traded stro b/c he couldn't handle Hak playing in front of him.....Cardinal doesn't mind.......I'm guessing Tim Thomas isn't going to be ok with letting Hak play while he sits on the bench next to Kwame.....

and on top of all of that........if the team was itching to kick lowry to the curb, the griz could have gotten an actual expiring contract for him and cardinal at the trade deadline (to miami or denver, for instance)....but choose not to......and expiring for cardinal and lowry is at least better than tim thomas.....

Why in the heck would Memphis do that? The pain of Cardinal's contract has passed. It is officially a net neutral and one season from being a net positive.

Cardinal is going to be in demand for the teams looking to get in the LeBron, Wade, and Bosh sweepstakes of 2010.

Cardinal's and Thomas' contracts run the same length at about the same price, and Lowry is worth more than a 2nd - so an easy "no" from Memphis IMO.

With the Grizzlies rebuilding I would just play Cardinal as a filler guy, 9th or 10th man kind of thing.

Why make garbage trades for different players with the same contract. I'm sure the Clippers would off Tim Thomas or the Nets might offer Trenton Hassel, but why would you want to do either?

thomas might actually bring a few extra wins in his last contract year, which is probably bad for the grizzlies. he'll probably actually put forth some effort in his contract year to try to get another contract. while with cardinal, you know you're going to get pure suck for the next three years.

"while with cardinal, you know you're going to get pure suck for the next three years."

Wrong. BC has this season +2 more. So we get stuck with his "suck" for, most likely, one more season. He actually gains value as an expiring deal in 09-10. Also note, the one thing BC isn't is a pain in the locker room. He'll never whine for PT because it's his contract year and he has $'s to make for that next deal.

what would you guys want for lowry? i mean seriously you guys have 4 good young pgs right now and lowry is the one with the least upside imo. would you accept maybe a deal with mobley instead of TT. you guys could either give him PT and then have him as a bigger expiring than cardinal in 2 years or buy him out and then his contract will expire in 2 years and be off the books.

Memphis has no need to trade Cardinal anymore. With their low overall salary, there is no need to trade a quality player just to dump Cardinal

I must have missed the official notice. While I wouldn't use Lowry to move him, the Grizzlies are still paying $6.3 MIL next year to have a $6.7 MIL expiring when he finally comes off the books in 2010.

For a comparison of cash to late picks, they are sometimes sold for about $3 mil.

Next, he's only a valuable trade asset the following year IF the Grizzlies are willing to take on salary/longer contract for him, which I don't think is clear either.

I don't think the trade is unreasonable, but I wouldn't do it for MEM. Still, the idea that Cardinal is a net neutral contract is false, particularly for the Grizz, and clearly demonstrates you're not paying the $6.3 million dollars next season, sitting on the bench waiting to become an expiring after another season.
