not for building a team around he isn't. even Stro has talent; however, neither Stro nor Gay are players to build a team around.

From an outsider's perspective I think I agree with this.

I'm a Bucks fan, and we got caught in a situation where Michael Redd was clearly our best player, so we began to build around him. We paid him max dollars to keep him from Cleveland, we've brought in a ton of guys to try to make it work, but it hasn't. Apparently it's hard to build a winning team when your best player is the 40th best player in a league of 30 teams. Who'd have thunk it? The irony being Redd's contract has stopped us from making deals for better players and has been a drain on our franchise pretty much since he signed it.

Now Rudy Gay is only a second year player, and he's really good. All signs indicate that he'll be better than Redd. But is he a special player? Will he be? Is he truly a guy you want to find pieces to fit around, or do you want him to be one of the pieces around another player? In all likelihood, it's probably the latter scenario. What that means is you can't design the team with him in mind, nor can you afford to grossly overpay him. The key is to not take a snapshot of the team at one moment in time and be forced to come up with a plan around what that snapshot shows. Keep building talent until you do find a special piece, and then it will be easy. That may mean you need to make some tough choices about letting some of that talent go. But sometimes you'd be better off for it. Use my Bucks with Michael Redd as a cautionary tale.
I'm sorry that I missed this post before. Excellent response.

Rudy Gay is an interesting player. I hate him, just to let that be known initially, because of his lax play at uconn.

I always find these things interesting... http://www.82games.com/0708/07MEM11D.HTM

Somehow Memphis allowed 8.0 more points per 100 possessions when Gay was on the court. They scored only .7 less. That is a reg flag for me, personally, when I look at a player. It is obvious he isn't trying on defense. Could that change? Yes. Will it? I doubt it from what I see in his character.
