JCN is ouuuuut
I was just listening to the Chris Vernon show with GM Chris Wallace and it was reported in the middle of their conversation that Juan Carlos has signed with FC Barcelona. When confronted with this information, Wallace said he didn't know whether it was true or not which lead to some funny heckling from Verno. Shortly after Rudy Gay reportedly signed with Real Madrid.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
It is disappointing that JCN did not even inform Wallace of his decision....he must have really disliked his stay in Memphis. Good riddance.

Sorry I can't find it on his blog-site yet...
I assume from the way you worded it, that JCN is going back to Europe?

Apparently the contract is worth 25 million dollars for 5 years (net amount).

From what I hear Wallace hadn't even extended the qualifying offer to Navarro that was worth less than 1 million dollar. Why would he inform Wallace of anything he did after that?
This is a pretty good offer he got and I can't see how he would say no. If you include taxes, the offer is equivalent to a 40 million dollar contract for 5 years.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
The only reason that I can think that Wallace didn't extend the QO is that he must've caught wind that JCN was heading back to FC. Had he extended the QO I believe that would have locked those dollars into the cap until his contract situation was resolved. At least that's what I HOPED happened.

Think of it this way. JCN was probably not going to stay here anyhow since Pau has moved on to Hollywood. Unfortunately, the Grizz lost their future first round pick over a one year rental.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
This was definetily for the best as with our current backcourt he would be a defensive liability.
His body language thru out the season screamed he was not use to the style of play and did not like it much either.
He moved his family back to Spain weeks before the season ended, so that should have given everyone a heads up.
The fact that the Grizz did not offer a qualifying offer and Wallace had made several trips to Spain, albeit to sway Marc Gasol, he had to know which way the wind blows.
Navarro was still on the hook for 3 million as a result of his buyout to play for the Grizz so I'm sure this was resolved with the new deal.
I am not sure the Grizz will retain his rights since they did not extend an offer but if he is slow at 27 years of age then my guess would be that he will be even slower at 32 when his contracts ends, and he is no Oscar Schmidt.
The Grizz can now carve more playing time for Critt, and if the rumors are true Lowry will end up in Portland or Denver in a week.
The Grizz pretty much have a lottery protected pick that must go to Washington who originally had Navarro's rights. If Washington is not able to get the pick by I think 2011 then they have to accept a 2nd rounder and cash as compensation. (Ron Tillery has an article in the C.A. with the details)

This is in Euro so over 8 mil American per season, factor in lower taxes free housing, utilities, car etc then that 8 mil is much much closer to 10 mil American per season, absolutely huge for a marginal NBA player in JCN.

Actually the Grizzlies lost a replaceable roleplayer.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
He had a decent rookie year from what I noticed (pistons fan), but I never really got what all the hype was about. The first will probably be another "Grizzlies trade future first for Otis Thorpe" type situation. Hopefully it won't be the 2nd overall though when they cash in.

It won't be. Don't have the exact framework of the deal at my fingertips, but I think the highest pick it would yield is around the 12th. After a few years, if the pick is never low enough to move to the Bullets, it becomes a cash payoff.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
I must be missing something here. If someone knows his contract status for sure, maybe they can clarify, but this seems incredibly foolish to me.
Not a Memphis fan but from what I've seen of JCN he looked like at least a decent combo guard. He was a restricted free agent, no? So if Memphis had made the QO on him, he would not have had an option to play in Europe (just like Anderson Varejao and the Cavs), and the Grizz would have been able to match any offer from an NBA team (or decide to let him walk). Absent a big offer sheet from another NBA team, they would have at least been able to use him for one more season at a very low salary. Instead, they used a 1st round pick for a one year rental and a mere $700K in cap relief.
Does not compute... does anyone know the details of JCN's contract with the Grizz that would enable him to just walk had the Grizz exercised that QO?

The Qualifying Offer only allows the Grizz to match any NBA offer. He is going back to Spain to play because they made him a stupid offer he could not refuse financially. Memphis did officially make the QO on him so if he ever decided to return to the NBA they would still have his rights.

Re: JCN is ouuuuut
From what I read it was a 5yr/15M EURO deal. That equates to about $23M US although that figure will fluctuate. That isn't an 8-10M equivalent deal. Basically a little less than full MLE.
All in all it was a bad trade for the Grizz for many reasons. It turned out he was neither a starting PG or starting SG. He was a combo guard and a nice backup with some skills for each position. A major motivator was to make Pau happier as the team reloaded around him. That didn't even last a full season. On the bright side the 1st round pick is lottery protected until 2012, so it won't be a high pick when paid off.

Yeah... except that the deal is tax free.
