Rudy Gay Question?

Post#1 » by Noonskadoodle » Sat Jun 26, 2010 12:01 am

Magic fan here, and I was just wondering if there was any way of acquiring Gay in a "Sign and Trade" or is he COMPLETELY off the table?

Vince Carter (expiring 16 mill)
Mickael Pietrus (very good defender who could replace Brewer, and can stroke the 3 ball)
Brandon Bass (good young PF who in the right system could really be a SOLID player)
Future 1st?

for

Rudy Gay
Darrel Arthur? or Sam Young?

Would that have any interest to you guys or would throwing a guy like Gortat in the mix to be more realistic? (although you guys already have 3 centers on roster)

I think that there is a pretty good chance that Gay is signed-and-traded, but not for a package like that.

I think that is a solid package, of course not as good as a FEW other teams out there. But I think you guys have to realize that those FEW teams out there with a really really good package will be after the likes of Bosh, Amare, Boozer, & Joe Johnson.

I'm not knocking Rudy Gay because we all know he is a VERY VERY talented player, but like I said the teams with the BEST packages will probably go after the names I just mentioned. (and if they cant get a deal done with them then go after guys like Rudy Gay and David Lee)

Just trying to get a gauge on what you guys think, because there are rumors that Otis Smith (Magic GM) is calling any and everyone that will listen about acquiring a top flight player, and myself personally have Rudy very very high on my list of fav players in this league.

That expiring would be a very attractive option for the Grizzlies.
Heisley has a reputation for being cheap, but I doubt he would do this unless Rudy basically said he wouldn't play for the Grizzlies.

Just my impression, but Rudy seems willing to play about anywhere as long as he's getting paid. Provided Orlando is willing to pay him more than Heisley - which is tough to call, Heisley has a reputation (that's not really based on fact, he's made numerous moves that cost money as well as moves that save money) and a man-crush on Rudy, so who knows - that's a very competitive package IMO. But then again, I value Bass and Pietrus more than others probably.

I would favor a package of Mickael Pietrus, Ryan Anderson, and the rights of Fran Vanzquez in exchange for Rudy and if NBA rules allow Demarre Carroll.

replace Fran´s right for a 1st round pick and call it a deal. Fran Vasquez will not play in NBA

I don't believe the Kings have the salaries to make it work - not sure of what kind of TPE could be involved.

I was thinking early on along the lines of something based around Thompson and Casspi. Just don't know what would work and what is off limits to Kings fans though. Also, when I suggested (on the Grizzlies.com boards) a trade based on Noc, Thompson and Casspi for Rudy - the feedback was very lukewarm.

As a Magic fan, the prospect of Rudy gay excites me. Just a few questions, how would you guys rate his overall game? Can he be a go to guy on the wing?

If he were a slightly better shooter, a little better at getting to the free throw line/finishing with contact and a little better with his decision making and shot selection, he would be a perennial All-Star.
I honestly have no idea if he'll ever put it all together, but he's shown flashes of really amazing talent. Not saying he'll ever be a superstar, just that he has the tools (but maybe not the basketball IQ or mentality) to reach that level.
He's not that far away from being an elite player in the league, but I have doubts about him being a true #1 option on a playoff squad. All that said I hope he stays with the Grizzlies and his game keeps improving.

From a contract standpoint, he's definitely not a max player. He probably deserves the kind of money Luol Deng is getting right now ($13-$14 million a year).
But he definitely doesn't deserve Rashard Lewis money. :P

I've read numerous times the Wolves are gonna make a push for him. Anybody w/ any knowledge of the Grizz think it's realistic he's traded to the T Wolves? Seems like we are pretty decent trade partners with the Grizzlies

The problem with discussing trades with most posters on the T'Wolves boards is that they are (mostly) obsessed with winning trades and tend to overvalue their own assets while undervaluing what others have to offer.

That said, the only hope that I see for a S&T with Minn is something centering Al and Rudy. Beyond that, one side or the other will be unhappy.

As Grizz fans, it outta our hands at this point.

Although I agree with you that Wolves fans do try to "win" every trade, you could say that about most if not all fans on (most) message boards. If anybody overvalues people it's GS or Knicks fans if your gonna take a shot at any fans.

But besides all that, who cares what "fans" want or who wants to win a trade, it's not up to us anyway. I'm not one of those posters who thinks his team has to win every trade anyway, I think I'm pretty realistic. Anyways I was just asking because it's been reported on here and several other places Kahn really likes Rudy. Not sure if it were true or not. Just asking if you (or any Grizz fan) thinks we have a legit shot at him since we make decent trade partners. Helluva lot better partners than the Magic anyway.

And for the record, most Wolves fans would JUMP at a trade for Gay if we gave Jefferson..at least the ones I know

Minn is one of the teams out there that has a helluva interesting collection of assets to make moves with. The question is, what is Kahn willing to part with? As much as I follow/obsess over the Grizz, I just don't have a clue as to how this will play out for Heisley and company.

My gut tells me, though, that it will be a longer wait than for other FA's though. Rudy likely won't get an offer he's ready to move on until the big boys are all signed. That's where I fear a, for example, NJ could step in and after missing out on other FA's straight up Max Rudy.

I'm going to hate this process much more than Pau's exit...

I would hate life if NJ throws max at Rudy.

Shouldn't you hate life anyway (considering you're a Nets fan)? :P
