OT: NBA FAN In Town For Mavs @ Grizz

Post#1 » by H00PDREAMS » Thu Jan 13, 2011 6:12 pm

Hi, a bunch of us are driving down from Kentucky to check out Mavs @ Grizz this weekend. I have been to several NBA games in various cities. However, never Memphis.

Would love to hear some suggestions about parking and what not. Been to Staples (LA), Field House((INDY), American Airlines (MIA) and I have learned that parking can be off the hook mad crazy. So I would appreciate any tips on parking near the FedEX forum.

Also any tips on what to do and what to see while in Memphis over the weekend would be cool as well.
So far we have lined up a Sun Studios visit and maybe visit Staxx but other than that I don't think much else is planned. We are all in our late 20's to 30's and enjoy everything from indie to dance to hip-hop. So tell me what's up Memphis? Thanks in advance!

Parking is not terrible in Memphis IMO. There are a few garages on the north (and one on the south) side of Peabody Place (between Main and Fourth) that I frequently use (a couple blocks from the arena). There's also a groundlevel lot at the intersection of Peabody Place and Fourth that usually runs $10. There's also sketchy street running off of Peabody Place and parallel to Beale - it's free, but it's sketchy, and as a tourist, I wouldn't recommend it to you.

While in Memphis, you must have BBQ, it's a rule. Almost anywhere you go will be good, but my preference is Central BBQ. As for nightlife, there's always Beale, plenty of bars downtown off of Beale, the Cooper-Young area, Overton Square (although it's declining somewhat) and the Highland strip - I don't venture into East Memphis or the suburban areas that much, so I'll leave it to another poster to tell you about those areas.

Yeah - you have to do BBQ. Central is very good, I happen to like Tom's quite a bit www.tomsbarbq.com/

Not necessarily the best, or really in the conversation any more, but for atmosphere and still good food, you should try the Rendezvous - it's downtown. Jefe's spot on on parking. Another Memphis "must do" for out of towners is Graceland. Hope you have a great time and enjoy yourself!

Thanks a lot everyone! We will definitely get some bbq that is for sure. We heard about Rendezvous so may go there. But who knows we may hit Toms or Central as well before we head out. We are staying in Germantown, lovely suburban area, but no authentic Memphis stuff.

Also thanks for the parking tips that is very valuable info.

Thanks again. Grizz fans rock! If anyone else has any tips or ideas please feel free to add.

By the way good luck with this Melo trade noise I am hearing.

Since you're staying in Germantown, the Commissary has really good BBQ and atmosphere

You have to make up your own mind, but Rendezvous is severely overrated IMO.

I think that's a very true/fair assessment from a local. So is Graceland for that matter. But if you're only going to be in town for a brief time and you're already going to be downtown, it's fine for someone visiting. Besides, the atmosphere/history is still cool.
