Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
This trade is incredible for us.
First, and most importantly, we get our starting small forward, who's a big upgrade over what we're going with currently. He's also a better 4 than Leuer. And we get him without having to give up Koufos. I was fine with giving up Koufos if it netted us starting-caliber SF, but in this deal we get to have both.
Plus, we get out of Quincy's long-term deal without giving up any real compensation, which is a miracle. He's a below-average player and an even worse fit on our team. Hopefully Jordan Adams, who is better now and has significantly more upside, gets some of his minutes.
The deal also gives Memphis a young guard prospect - who I know they liked coming into last year's draft - in Russ Smith. Plus, it gives us more room under the luxury tax threshold, which we can use to pick up another shooter like Ray Allen or perhaps an upgrade to Leuer.
I really don't care about losing the pick, provided that it has somewhat reasonable protection on it. This is as good of a chance as we've ever had to win it all. Gotta load up on as much ammo as possible, even if it proves to be detrimental to the future.
Huge props to Chris Wallace on this one.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
I would rather drop Calathes than Russ Smith. The guy has serious talent, is not much of a point guard, but packs a scoring punch off the bench and also fits our defensive consistency. Good addition.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
Overall, I love the deal like everyone else, but was hoping more for Luol Deng and would rather have no given up Pondexter. All in all, though, hard to deny it is a big time addition.

The Grizzlies were rumored to be really high on Smith during this past draft. I think they're keeping him.

Awesome.
Celtic fan here. I am also pleased with protection. Would have preferred unprotected pick of course, but this is not horrible. All is all, this is a win-win trade. Two teams with different goals going in different directions. Congratulations and good luck. Please stay ahead of Clippers as we have their pick this year.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
we should really look at changing the den pick so they get it this year . no idea how but i'd much rather them get a pick now and bos in 2017 than leaving them as is .

Now we have to do:
Allen + Koufos + Calathes for G. Henderson + C. Zeller + 2nd
Allen + Koufos + Calathes for G. Henderson + C. Zeller + 2nd

Allen probably not, but Carter would be great for Charlotte, because he has been up and down for us and mostly down.

Why? Allen's better than henderson and koufos is a better fit here than zeller would be. What we have to do is get a good backup pf, problem is that nobody on the team who's expendable will get us anything good in a trade.
- koufos: can't trade him because he's our only backup center since we didn't keep whiteside. Maybe if we sign dalembert.
- core should stay intact imo: conley, allen, green, zbo, marc, udrih, lee
- vince: with the way he's been playing you won't get anything valuable for him. If he gets healthy he could get more minutes and be part of the core and with some extra minutes for adams that could make lee available to trade.
- calathes, leuer are worthless as trade material
- adams and stokes are still unproven so you won't get much for them either
In short, with our current roster the only valuable trade bait we have is lee, but only if vince gets healthy and if you trust adams enough to play about 15 mpg. Personally i'd keep that scenario as a plan B. Plan A would be to sign dalembert or maybe okafor and trade kosta. Either way, we'll need to get a good backup pf somehow, leuer is too inconsistent and stokes is too young. Don't get me wrong i like both of them but i just don't think they'll be reliable in the playoffs.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
Celtics fan here...
In one way this trade is sad because I think it says something about how bad Carter has been. He was supposed to be a 6th man to stabilize that wing rotation (which has been an issue for a long time), and Memphis clearly doesn't trust him at this point.
I assume the starters will be...
Conley
Allen (I'd guess Allen starts, but Lee closes games)
Green
Randolph
Gasol
Beno has been great as the back-up PG
Lee is now the 6th man, pushing Carter into a smaller role as the 4th wing
Leur has been adequate at PF
Kofous is grossly overqualified to be Gasol's back up (last year he average just 6 MPG in the playoffs)
It's a good, deep rotation and the major weakness has been filled.
The one thing I'd say now is that there isn't really a 7th man on the roster. Beno/Carter/Luer/Kofous all probably average <15 MPG (maybe <10 MPG) in the playoffs. Ideally, you'd like a 3rd big that's as good as Kofous, but has the versatility to play either PF or C... but I don't think that trade is out there.

I'm not too big on Hendu. He's always been too mediocre for me. Zeller is ok. He need more experience as he grows into his career. Overall, I feel that Charlotte gets the better deal than Memphis does.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
Koufos is gone, we can replace 15min of him. Zeller is a good young prospect, he could fail, but ill take my chances, He comes cheap for 3 years. Allen better than Henderson... i dont think that, and allen is 33 and... you know...
If u fell Charlotte gets the better deal, NICE, it means they could accept this. Btw,i dont think we have the balls to trade Allen this season but i have to include him in the trade just to make it more reasonable.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
Id keep koufos and allen, it is not all about talent, Id say the chemistry all around is very good as it is, they know the system and they have playoff experience. Lets see how Green fits into the rotation. I cant find a grizz fan dissapointed with this trade....

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
Why would we ever trade Tony Allen? He is our backbone and sets the tone for our defense.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
First of all, i dont want to trade Tony, couse he is an icon here, hes the GRINDFATHER.
But if i have to, lets see: "why would we ever trade Tony Allen"
*he cant shoot
*he loses his man a lot with out the ball
*he takes a lot of space for zbo and marc
*he cant make layups
*he takes bad decisions
Hes just a strange nature defensive player, hes not even good technically, he just has the talent on ball defense and cutting some lane pass. BUT i repeat i dont want to trade the GRINDFATHER... yet.
So lets take him out of the discussion

It mention on the radio that Iowa was recalling TT. It's been a minute since I've heard his name. He didn't turn as solid as I thought he would earlier in his career.

Re: Grizzlies Nearing Agreement for Jeff Green
There is nothing sad about Carter in this trade. The reason we are able to part with Quincy is because Carter so outplayed Pondexter. I was shocked to hear Quincy was part of the deal really. We had invested such a tremendous amount in him and he appeared in all the public events. Business sure is harsh!
Ok I wanted to share this incredible analysis by the famous Grizz admirer, Matt Moore here on CBS SPORTS: http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-bas ... reen-trade
As a Celtics fan I was really opposed to ever trading for Jeff Green, because I know his name comes up ever since we thought about dealing Rudy Gay (and all the rumors of him coming to Boston before). Like many of you, I remember Jeff Green being a phenom at Georgetown and part of the big3 in OKC as Durant and Westbrook went from schoolchildren to actual NBA players.. But Green in Boston has been underwhelming. I thought Brad Stephens would have fixed by now... just have to take him for what he is... What is he?
I just am thinking now this is a low risk move that could pay off. Green is 4th option - not a Rudy Gay replacement. It could be just what we need. I can't help hearing the Boston analysts saying "when the Grizzlies are in a pivotal moment in the playoffs, and they need Jeff Green to make the right move in a win or break situation... I'm not sure this will get them the title they are coveting this year". or next. I just have to be optimistic. Because conversely - if it were Tayshaun Prince in his shoes instead at the moment in the playoffs in May/June 2015... would that be ANY BETTER?
Its fascinating to watch the Celtics crater in a way even more spectacular than 2006 (recall they still had Tony ALlen, Kendrick Perkins, and Paul Pierce during those dark times). Without any discernible talent on the roster - how do you rebuild from that? Even in the Grizz darkest days we had a lot of chips (Pau, Rudy22, Mike Miller, etc). but this is grizz forum not celtics....
I recall long ago (2003) we traded away the Kendrick Perkins draft pick. Then years later Perkins was traded for Jeff Green to the OKC Thunder. Ironic that the kendrick pick comes back to us in the form of Jeff Green...
Green really doesn't have to do much more than Perkins. A decent role player. A better than average role player. And help us get to the NBA Finals. Whether we can win a 7 game series with the best teams is yet to be seen. It should be a fun to watch! Hope he gets some minutes tonight!
