It is a pretty good fallback move, because if nothing significant happens on the buyout market, then they can decide if they want to sign him for the rest of the season.

Non-Memphis fan here -
I've always liked Green dating back to his Alabama days. He might be the best player in the D-league this year.
He's a long PF with decent athleticism. He's rebounded everywhere he's played and is a decent defender. He's added a 3pt shot that might be passable in the last few years. And he's just 24.
Memphis isn't a great place to get minutes because they're so good now, but I hope he catches on.
