Would you do it: Collin Sexton

Post#1 » by VCfor3 » Mon Jul 19, 2021 5:12 pm

I thought this was an awesome idea by psman so thought I'd do it for another young player in question

Sexton is on the trading block. The Cavs want a large return but it doesn't seem very likely. There is a report that NOP offered #10+Bledsoe for Sexton+Osman+protected future 1st. I don't know what the protections are, but giving up a pick plus the value of an Osman/Bledsoe swap really hurts the value #10 brings.

So let's say the Cavs call and ask for Grayson Allen+Utah 1st+two 2nds. The Knicks low key make it known that they are likely to offer Sexton a max deal next offseason.

1. Would you make the trade?
2. Would you give up one of Clarke, Tillman, or Bane instead of Allen or include #17 instead of the Utah 1st?
3. If you do make the deal do you sign him to a max contract or is there a limit to what you offer before letting him walk?

Don't know if Cavs would take it but your suggestion of Allen, Utah 1st, 2 2nds would be my offer..

Most I'd go is Clarke, Allen, 2 2nds if Memphis plan to utilize 3J at PF.

1. No
2. No
3. No

The only reason I see for Memphis trading for him is to resell him higher later on. Otherwise, we shouldn’t touch it. He simply doesn’t fit. It’s a wrong direction. We would likely need to fix balance-related problems this trade might easily create.

I know that Sexton is far from an ideal fit, but he is young, talented, and could be a cheap addition. Sexton would cover all non-Ja minutes and you'd get a decent part of the season to evaluate him. If he isn't working out then you should be able to move him at the deadline for a late first which should replace the Utah pick. My only hesitation would be if his teammates like him or not. I saw another poster talk about the locker room not being fans of Sexton so if he is going to be a problem I would be hesitant to offer much of anything much less a 1st.

My concern is that, unlike Tyus, Sexton isn’t so good at engaging his teammates, to say the least. It means effectively that our bench young players will be rejected any opportunity for growth and development. Sexton, like Clarkson, would require to be surrounded by role veterans rather than young fellows. I am afraid that we will be desperate to maximize his role to make him happy or/and maximize his trade value - all at the cost of the rest of the team. To conclude, we simply don’t have the space that would match his natural role and expectations.

Melton will be the first and the most affected by this trade. Frankly speaking, Sexton just mimics him. The difference is that Melton, though clearly a less offense-productive guy, can play great defense, makes all his teammates better, and has a lower ego and expectations.

I see that Keon Johnson is falling, whereas Duarte is raising... I am thinking...

“The Golden State Warriors are intrigued with acquiring Collin Sexton but it would not net the Cleveland Cavaliers someone like James Wiseman or the No. 7 pick in this year’s draft, per sources,” Dammarell said.

The interest in Collin Sexton by the Golden State Warriors is an intriguing one, given how they still have Stephen Curry on their roster. Are they perhaps preparing for life after Curry?

Curry has one more season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next year. ESPN's Bobby Marks said that the Warriors guard is eligible to sign a four-year, $215.4 million extension this offseason. Golden State GM Bob Myers said that they’re confident Curry will sign the extension. But what if he doesn’t?

Memphis trade - (Anderson, Sexton, TE, GS 24) for (Filler, #7, #14)

Drop Winslow's contract, take some of GS's salary into cap space & give them back their 24 pick along with some win now players for 7 @ 14.

They're interest in Sexton & Concern in Curry potentially leaving is what I've posted concerning the 24 pick several times. This trade gives them the present ability to contend & with Sexton & the 24th pick back future consideration for a life without Curry or Green. They'd have Wiseman & Sexton + control of their future at that point ...

The trade might need value adjustment but this would be the concept behind it.

GS trade - (Filler, #7, #14) for (Anderson, Sexton, GS 24)

Cavs trade - (Sexton) for (Allen, Clarke, Utah 22)

Memphis trade - (Anderson, Allen, Clarke, Utah 22, GS 24) for (Filler, #7, #14)

Memphis would then have to take someone like Garuba at 14 or 17 to replace losing both Anderson & Clarke.

This is certainly should be yes on our end, but I don`t believe GSW might do it.

Agreed though I like the thought process behind it. On the Locked On Ultimate Draft podcast series, Memphis did Anderson and the Utah 1st for #14. Replacing the Utah 1st with the Golden State 1st should add a decent bit of value plus they get Sexton though his value is unclear. We could always send the Utah 1st as well to Golden State and the Cavs get a 2nd from us or something.

Your original deal had the Utah first + going for Sexton.

In Memphis helping GS to land Sexton as there's rumored interest, in the 3 way Anderson + Utah pick = #14

The article I posted, said GS wouldn't trade Wiseman or #7 straight up for Sexton but would they do it if it meant also getting control back of their 24 pick ?.

So when Memphis flip Sexton to GS & combine him with their 24 pick back, along with maybe some cap relief = #7

Like you said it would come down to how much GS value Sexton, maybe Memphis include #17 but I thought that might be an overpayment on Memphis behalf

Memphis trade - (Anderson, Clarke, Allen, TE, #17, Utah 22, GS 24) for (Filler, #7, #14)

GS trade - ((Filler, #7, #14) for (Anderson, Sexton, #17, GS 24)

Cavs trade - (Sexton) for (Clarke, Allen, Utah 22)

Yes I would trade for Sexton and I would include 17/Clarke level of a package. At this price you cannot dwell on the negatives and focus on the positives he would bring to our team. However I would like to stay in this draft so I would try to work it without the 17 in possible.

I would hope we could talk to his agent and express we want him playing 30+ minutes a game, but we want him more in that super sixth man Manu/Vinny Johnson type role. If his agent comes back that Sexton expects to be a starter and wants a max then I might not do the trade but if he is open to the idea then I make the trade.

I'd consider using him like the Jazz used Conley this year. Let him start the game but take him out after a few minutes. Then bring him in when Mitchell(or Ja for us) comes off. You have short stretches of overlap but keep one on the court at all times. Playoffs get tough when you want Ja in for 42 minutes and the defense may not be able to survive Sexton/Ja for half the game, but if JJJ can find a way to consistently play defense like he has flashed at times you may be able to survive it with Brooks and one other solid defender on the court as well.
