Vasquez and Rubio

Ive read of Vasquez being compared to Marko Jaric and I doubt that very seriously cause I think Vasquez could actually have a chance at taking Conley starting spot, something Marko couldn't do. Besides I see nothing similiar about their games. I wouldn't even compare him to Catino Mobley.

I would almost say he's a right handed Mano Ginoboli but I could be wrong. I haven't seen Greivis play that much, just some highlights.

Last year all the talk was about Ricky Rubio being our #2 pick until Rubio expressed he didn't want to play for Memphis and then that he probably won't be able to get out of his contract.

So I have a question for anyone who may have watched Greivis alot and also watched Rubio alot.

Could you possibly compare Greivis with Rubio on the way they play the game. If so why u think so. Cause even tho I like Conley I think we'd found our point guard of the future.

You can´t compare both. In terms of skill, Rubio is in the CP3 level IMO. In terms of how they play the game, Rubio is the ultimate playmaker while I think Vasquez, while being a good playmaker, is more of a scorer. In defense, Rubio has a pretty good lateral speed and will average 2.5+ spg when he comes, while I think Vasquez rely more on his height to defend oponent´s guards.

Vasquez is the player I wanted in this draft and I can see him as our starter in the future, but he´s nowhere near Ricky

I've seen Vasquez play a lot, I would put lump him in with Ginobli & Rubio, as a crafty player with excellent passing/play-making capabilities who finds a way to come-through when clutch play is needed.
Vasquez is right-there with Rubio in the passing category (see the YouTube clips), but not quite the shooter that Ginobli is. People are going to surprised how quickly he will be able to contribute.

At U of M Vasquez had to carry the team on his shoulders so he did tend to shoot more, I suspect that won't be the case in Memphis.

Vasquez's downside is that he will have difficulty keeping the faster guards in-front of him so he will need some help on D. Then-again, how-fast is Jason Kidd these days?

I fully expect Greivis to win the starting PG spot at some point, sooner rather than later.

Sorry, but no way is Vasquez on Rubio's level in terms of passing.

You haven't seen Vasquez play for the last four years. Vasquez is a very good passer, Rubio-like in-fact. Rubio is a better pure-PG, but Vasquez could project to be just as effective.

I think Vasquez is more a bigger Sergio Rodriguez than a bigger Nash... I am a big fan of Sergio, but Vasquez is an inconstant shooter, he wont be a scorer in NBA, flashy pass... but Rubio is in another level... his defense is really awsome, he is not an scorer (today at least) but he is a GREAT true point guard, he need to improve his shoot, but he can go to the rim efficiently.

I am from Spain, but i have seen a ton of NCAA this year, I dont think that Vasquez can play at FC Barcelona at PG this year, only a few minutes

I have seen Vasquez play many, many times. They do not have the same kind of court vision. It really is not comparable either. And their upsides are no where near the same.

At this stage I don't see Vasquez stealing the starting pointguard position from Conley. Vasquez needs to learn alot of the cerebral details of running an offense at the NBA level. I thought he did fine in summer league but this coming season will be about him learning to drive from the instructor, not being handed the keys to the car. If he shows enough progression this coming season then maybe they don't re-sign Conley, but that is a long ways off still.

2.5+ steals? There's only been 17 players to do that over the last 2 decades. People throw out crazy averages and expectations.

He may very well lead the league in steals at some point, as his defense is geared towards getting a hand in passing lanes. He struggles a bit defending against quicker point guards. So his lateral speed is not all that.

I finally caught the Spain versus Argentina game. I was disappointed in Rubio. Fernandez is a keeper. Gasol plays with passion but clearly he's not your goto offensive guy.

Spain almost had a historic comeback in this game. It was theirs in the final minute but Argentina held on for the win. Spain obviously has some internal issues and injury to JCN? Rubio is not ready for primetime yet though either. From this performance leads one to believe that there's more than one reason he is holding off on the NBA now.

Another big difference between these two is that Ricky is not a leader, as evidenced by his disappearance during FIBA, it could come later though. Vasquez is definitely a leader who doesn't shrink when everything is on the line, he has a way of making things happen. When Vasquex adjusts to the NBA style of play, he will be fine.

Don´t get me wrong, but you can´t judge a player based on one game. Rubio is a natural leader as you can see his play in Barcelona. He´s the QB in Barcelona in all hurdles and his will is always done in the court.

Is Vasquez going to get any pre-season burn?

Still recovering from ankle surgery. Haven't seen an updated ETA on his return to the floor.

Vasquez was a leader at Maryland University. He wouldn't be on a contender Olympic team.

Do you guys see Vasquez getting any playing time this season or do you see him firmly entrenched behind Acie Law and Tony Allen?
