Question About Marc Gasols Contract Next Year (Rap fan)

now im going to assume some how we get rid of Jose by throwing in a 1st round pick to a team. This puts us far enough below the cap to offer Gasol a max contract (IMO BCs #1 target). Now i know its far away and whatever but im just curious as to what you guys think.
If Gasol was offered a max contract by ANY team not just us, would you match? Would you match and then pay Mayo in 2012? What happens to Zach in that case? Does it hinder on you making the playoffs this year to show that this group of players can get it done.
im just curious, its a simple question, i come in peace and im just seeing what you think the Griz FO would do because you likely have a better understanding of them then i do.

Let's be honest. No one here can answer that question. We can only guess. All indications are that Marc Gasol is highly valued by Grizzlies management, his family lives in Memphis, and he has secured the starting center position, with Thabeet not showing any indication of being starter quality anytime soon. So it's likely they will want to re-sign him and obviously management sees what other quality centers in the league get paid.
Now as to the question of whether or not the owner is willing to pay that much money to Gasol and Zach Randolph, that we don't know. The owner came right out and said from the last part of last season that he will re-sign Rudy Gay no matter what and he was true to his word. Zach Randolph recently said his agent is in discussions with Memphis about an extention already.
I haven't heard anything about Marc Gasol but I imagine at some point his name will come up.The process unfolds in a certain order for different teams and the timeframe isn't urgent right now. Until then it is only speculation and you can draw whatever answers you like from whatever media stories you hear. But we're all in the same boat. If it were up to the fans I think Marc Gasol would be re-signed no matter what. But it's not up to the fans.

As an observer, it's more likely that they would match Gasol and let Zach walk if it came down to it. Zach's expiring deal makes it much easier for the Grizzlies to absorb the hit of Mayo+Gasol.
Some of the more diehard fans would probably come to explain it better than I have, but I do believe it would be more likely for Memphis to keep Gasol and use Mayo as trade bait or something. If they have to they would let Zach walk.
The new CBA will probably also make it harder to snatch guys like Gasol, who are coming off rookie deals, away.

Couldn't have said it better myself, tekkon. Marc is not only a vital cog on the team, he's also a fan favorite as well as being an adopted local (played HS ball in Memphis when Pau first joined the Grizz).

I'm done as a Grizz fan if Heisley lets Marc walk. I don't think he will, but if he does, I'm done as a fan and I'm sure many others will be done as well. That would be the icing on the crap cake.

I don't know any information about Marc contract or the CBA.
From what I have seen though Marc Gasol is a keeper, although Marc is a little bit older because of him playing Euroleague and will be 26 for the season, he is a stud. He is 7'1 260lbs and is very skilled and coordinated thats rare in todays nba.I honestly think he has the 4th in terms of low post moves of big men behin Pau, Bosh, and Bynum.
We all have seen what Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol have been able to do. If together OJ Mayo and Marc Gasol could be doing the same thing being a contender year after year maybe as soon as this upcoming season.

The Grizz can't extend Marc until this summer. They'll have his Bird rights and he'll be an RFA.

Just going on my gut feeling, but I think that the Grizz probably value the OJ, Zbo and Marc in the following order: Marc, Zbo and OJ. With that said, Tillery has often reported that Zbo will have to take a significant pay cut to remain in Memphis after this year (he's due 17.3, and IIRC Tillery has indicated the Grizz want to extend him at 10-12 per year). If Zbo prices himself outside of the Grizz's range and walks, then I think it's safe to say that the Grizz will retain Marc and OJ at whatever price and move forward with a core of OJ, Rudy & Marc.

I have a feeling that Zach will be retained in that range. It'll then play out that with the money saved from Zach, from Jaric's deal Marc and OJ will be extended.

That's how I see it as well. If they can convince Randolph to take $12mil then it would work out for Gasol taking the same with the savings that you mentioned with Zach and Jaric. That's around $13mil.
It then makes for an interesting decision with Conley.
By the way, did anyone else notice the comment from Randolph when he let it out that they are meeting about an extention. He said he could be here for a couple more years. I wonder if both sides are looking at a shorter term.

well if Randolph signs for 11 million (in the middle between 12 and 10 so well go off that) and Marc is offered a MAX contract from another team does MEM match with Randolph re-signed? Do they take a trade exception from the team (we have a 14.5 million TE) and hope to find a cheaper replacement? What happens to Conley then? Then in 2012 what about Mayo? Gay making 14.4, Randolph at 12.5 *annual increase* and Gasol at max... seems like a lot for a starting 4, no?

They'll still have enough cash to keep Marc around. It's more likely that a guy like OJ or Conley would be let go than Marc; Conley would probably be sacrificed to give Marc a deal since they are both up for new contracts at the same time. Also, Jaric's 7 million comes off the books after this year which helps a lot to pay for these guys.
If Zbo decides to price himself out of Memphis' market, he will most likely be let go. Marc is a much more highly valued player seeing as how he's really the one visible player from the Gasol trade.
With the new CBA coming up who knows what the max might be. Maybe Marc can be retained for 10-12 million a year? I know fans of other teams (like me) want him but the Grizzlies value him, it's hard to not see any contract he receives get matched.

Quality center like Marc is hard to find, I think he will get what David Lee gets this year.

Nope - he was a second round pick, so he apparently can't be signed until after this season.

To me, Marc is the most valuable player on your list. While rudy may be a better player, his contract is a little bit of a deterent and the fact that gasol is a skilled big man who can play C which is fairly rare atm puts gasol higher.
lilojmayo wrote:I honestly think he has the 4th in terms of low post moves of big men behin Pau, Bosh, and Bynum.
I think he is better than bynum(especially because he is always injured) but i think tim duncan may be better than marc. Dwight is probs better down low aswell imo. Kamaan is pretty good aswell and yao when healthy. So maybe Marc is 7/8 for me. But marc is a solid 7 footer and you cant teach height.
I don't see your management not retaining him unless thabeet turns into hakeem the dream. Even then i think you would still retain him because a lot of teams would give up a lot for a solid seven footer. they would give up an arm and a leg for at top 10 low post big man especially if that could be their missing piece. You can pick up a starting calibre guard a hell of a lot easier than a big man.
Anyway i hope you retain all your young guns and good luck this season

I'm not sure exactly how "max contract" gets defined but he's worth at least $12M a year. Look at Elton Brand or Carlos Boozing. pay that money

That would be an ideal situarion for the Grizz if they want to give a try to the core of the "fantastic 4", sign Randolph for only 2 years at around 30 mill (16 + 14) instead of a longer contract so you don't commit long term and get some leverage for the upcoming years where the contracts of Gay, Gasol and Mayo raise. But anyway the grizz payroll would be in the high 60s in 2011 and 2012 unless they don't exercise the option on Thabeet, will they be willing to accept the huge mistake it was picking him?
