Grizz winning with defense

Post#1 » by jefe » Fri Mar 4, 2011 12:53 pm

Came across this article yesterday. It breaks down how the Grizz are playing some of the best defense in the league, but surprisingly really only dominating in forcing turnovers compared to other defensive metrics.

What might be a bit surprising is how the Grizzlies have made their push over the last 20 games, in which they are 14-6. Over that span, they have played defense at a level only a half-dozen or so teams have reached this season. Those teams are known defensive royalty. The Grizzlies are not, and it was their borderline top-10 offense that carried their shaky defense to 40 wins last season.

. . .

Forcing turnovers is a skill. Too often I read writers complaining about how their favorite team blew it against Memphis by playing sloppy and turning the ball over too often. Nonsense. If it happens every night, it’s not an accident; the Grizzlies want to take the ball away, as often as possible.

But that’s really all they do well on defense. They allow a league-average mark from three-point range and an effective field-goal percentage (which takes threes into account) a tick worse than the league average. They are a bad defensive rebounding team, and they send opponents to the line a bit more often than an average club, according to Basketball-Reference.

I was just going over league stats this morning and noticed how Memphis has improved it's points allowed from last season, even it has been a little at the expense of points scored. I'm a fan of the tougher, defensive style of games anyways so I can appreciate how the team has improved in that area this season.

Sure, the article you quoted may be correct about them being just around the league average, or slightly below. But they fail to remind us that is a step up from last season. And as far as sending teams to the line, I think it's a mark of an aggressive defense. Really the only thing that surprised me was that they aren't very good at defensive rebounds.

As far as forcing turnovers I think it's obvious to anyone that has watched them this season that it is something they really try to work on, it's kind of their defensive signature, and it has produced positive results.
