Grizzlies need to take alot more shots from 3 point line.

Post#1 » by grizzlies50 » Sun Jan 6, 2013 10:28 pm

Hi I am huge grizzlies fan from Japan. Myy English very bad so please for give me.

Defense problem

Hi pick defense is little bad this problems cause so many basket from 3point line.
Otherwise every Grizzlies defense is very solid as rock.

Offense Problem

I really do not like Grizzlies offense set play right now. We lost so many games since December. Why? Simply our problem cause too many turnovers that really hurts our offense and defense. We gave up Portland 20 easy fast break points after lost the ball by turnover. Grizzlies has so many turnover since December. Because we are not trying to take a shot until last second or passing too much and not trying to take a shot. Sometimes Ellington or Rudy is wide open but they still did not take shot especially from 3 point line.

I think Grizzlies outside set plays are so limted compare to other good perimeter team forexample New York Nicks, San Antonio Spurs. I know Coach Hollins would like to take alot of shot from paint area or close to paint area using our Conley-Gasol high-low ststem to create the space inside. "this is not working anylonger"

Because every opponet team know Grizzlies takes so many shots from close to paint area. so all the opponet team use zone defense or double team or deny the ball to stop Z-Bo and Marc and Rudy. or stop our basket from low post or inside. But Coach still would like to take a shot from traffic jam paint area. this is not make any sence to me at all.

our second units Speights,Arthor sometimes first units Marc,Tony trying to take more perimeter jump shot to spread zone defense. But that is not enough to spread out the Zone defense. Also Tony is not good from perimeter either.

My solution

Grizzlies needs more outside setplay or new offense system for the spread zone defense. for example High pick 3,catch and shoot 3, etc... and Please Do not pass ball inside when opponent team use the traffic jam zone defense. Use high pick or penetrate drive to goal or kick out the ball catch and shoot from 3point.

Conley Bayless Q Gay Ellington they must take 15-20 shots from 3 Point if they can hit 7/20 from 3 is more enough to spread the zone defence away then easy to attack paint area. Right now we just passing ball too much and keep the ball long times until last sec and take a bad jump shot and miss or 24sec or lost the ball. This is not going to work anymore.

If you go 7/20 from downtown I don't see how you're going to win ball games... but at this point I'd almost give it a try just to see what shakes out. I'm also willing to try what you say though just to shake things up. They're stagnant right now.

My point is grizzlies struggle when opponent team use the zone defense each time. Only get out from zone defense is take a more shot from perimer or use pick and roll or take a shot from 3.

First off, welcome to the boards.

Yes, the Grizzlies are struggling offensively and it has cost them some winnable games during the past month. Teams continue to key in on that weakness. If you want to become one of the best, you have to fight tooth and nail and sometimes sacrifice in order to become one of the elites. The Grizzlies can be one of those teams if they can overcome their glaring weaknesses and become something else entirely.

Mrs.SD2042

Thank you for the reply and Nice to meet you. If our team solve the offence problems i am pretty sure Grizzlies are able to compete Western elite team(Oklahomacity Thunder Los Angels Clippers San Antonio Spurs)

Mr.vanjulio

Nice to meet you.

Memphis Grizzlies fans in Japan. We only talked many time about our out side shot weakness since last year.
I know Grizzlies had struggle from inside shot just creat ton of turnovers since December. So that is why we are struggle since December. Grizzlies kept doing same offense set play attack only inside no outside.

passing ball way too many, spend 24 sec for passing, bad outside shot, creat ton of the unnecessary turnover. because all the team just use double team to Z-Bo and Marc or use zone defense to protect paint area.(good example is ATL@MEM MEM@DEN MEM@PHO) it was no space to attack inside. but Coach would like to take a shot only paint area. it did not make sence to me at all.

really dig the sound of "mr. vanjulio" - carve that on my tombstone!

for a long time I think our goal was to play inside out until they went zone on us so of course it goes into Gasol usually. I think that's still our best option because it opens up so many plays from there with guys cutting and few big men pass like Gasol and ZBO AND are threats from > 10' - ditto for Darrell Arthur. On defence you have to pick your death because you can't stop every option and it's just "which way do we want to die?"

The only time we should run ISO is when it's a huge mismatch or we're trying to play hero ball. My question is when do you ever play hero ball? Play balanced and play smart (Conley, Bayless, Gasol handle the ball only) and to use the most overused phrase ever, "take what the defence gives you" (what I said above, they HAVE to give up something when you have the 5 guys we have out there).

I think the problem is Tony Allen. He's just no good from outside. You essentially can ignore him defensively if he's standing on the three point line.

I think Hollins need to be quicker to pull Allen if teams are sagging into the paint. Ellington has proven that he is a good shooter who can get red hot in an instant. And playing him with the starters and Allen with the bench makes a ton more sense to me. The bench is actually a better collection of shooters with Bayless and Pondexter shooting it well and with Speights and Arthur being legitimate threats out to 18 FT. Allen's weaknesses wouldn't be so magnified there, and we can use him to shut down the shot-chucking sixth-man that so many teams feature right now (like Jamal Crawford, Marshon Brooks, Manu, Jet, Kevin Martin, Lou Williams, etc), and who I seem to recall as hurting us quite often.
You can borrow ten cents; my two cents is free
