Official: Rudy Gay to Toronto

According to WT, the Grizzlies & Raptors are talking a trade involving Rudy Gay for Jose Calderon & Ed Davis.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/22 ... _Grizzlies

I personally hope that this deal doesn't go through, as it would leave a huge hole at SF. Granted the article states the deal could expand, however, I still don't see this deal being better than the rumored Rudy Gay for Jared Dudley trade.

What do you guys think?

No way this deal gets done without a 3rd team getting involved. Personally as a Raptor fan i would love to get Rudy Gay and would be willing to include Derozan to do it. Not sure Memphis would be interested in him though.

Calderon + Derozan + 3rd team assets

^ My point exactly. We have no need for Calderon and wouldn't give him many minutes with Conley in there. (even if he is an expiring, which I'm not sure?) In Derozan, we're getting another non-shooter, who is a worse defender than Rudy.

I personally think that the bulk of what we receive in such a trade would have to come from elsewhere. Nothing coming from Toronto makes the Grizzlies a better team.

You guys have any interest in former 1st overall pick Andrea Bargnani? :)

I don't love it. I think Randolph should go, and not Gay.

Randolph is arguably our best player, but let's face it: there just aren't enough block/paint touches to go around with Gay and Gasol there. And these three players often get in each other's way. If you look at it, the Grizzlies have been just as good or better in terms of W/L when either Gay or Randolph is hurt over the last three seasons.

We could trade Gay, but there are reasons not too. Namely, the fact that he's six years younger than Randolph, and that he's having basically his worst season since his rookie year (he would have been a lot more valuable last season, and will be a lot more valuable again in the future). Randolph, on the other hand, is likely on the downside of his career. Anybody who's watched him operate on those iso plays on the right block this season is left wondering what happened to 2011 Zach Randolph.

The other reason for trading Randolph rather than Gay is consideration of who would replace them in the starting lineup. If we deal Gay to toronto, we likely would have to wait until the draft to get a capable wing scorer (they likely won't give up Derozan). And it'd likely be the same in other deals (i like Dudley, but he is essentially just a shooter on offense).

If we deal Randolph, we have a very capable PF in Arthur just waiting to step up. Like Randolph, he is a physical player and good rebounder (not quite the stud on the offensive glass like ZBo, but capable nonetheless). He is longer, more athletic, better defensively, possesses a better and quicker jumpshot, shows a nice turnaround jumper on the block, runs the floor well, and makes quick and decisive moves with the basketball (whereas Randolph is a bit of a ball-stopper). And he does all this at less than a quarter of the salary of Randolph.

Ideally, we would deal Randolph to the Rockets for Patterson + Delfino + filler + possible future considerations (assuming HOU can't land Josh Smith or Paul Milsap, both of whom they might prefer over Zbo). If there is anything missing from the Rockets team, it's offensive rebounding and post scoring, and this trade would fill both of those needs.

This trade would also improve the Grizzlies right away in my opinon, while also getting us well under the luxury tax (Houston has 6-7 million dollars in cap room). Delfino is a big time shooter. Patterson is a decent rebounder and defender who has also added a three point shot this year (35.8% on 81 attempts).

These guys, along with Pondexter (when he returns) well as Bayless, Leuer, and Chris Johnson, could really help space the floor, making it easier for us to run any kind of offense we want - Conley on the pick and roll, Gay isolated on the wing, Gasol in the high or low post - whatever we want really.

I would also prefer to deal Tony Allen in the event of this trade. We would lose defense, but Gasol and Arthur can clean up a lot of mistakes made on the perimeter, and we could put much better offensive units on the floor.

I think trading Randolph would be an option if we lose 4-2 in round 1 of the playoffs this year or something devastating like that. Right now it's INCONCEIVABLE.

Sources say the Raptors have made Jose Calderon and Ed Davis as the core of a trade offer for Gay.

Any core of Calderon and Ed Davis is met with

^ That's delusion. There's nothing on Toronto that could help us aside from TRoss.

Well, I'm a Bulls fan but if I had to choose a fav. '2nd' team it'd be the Grizz.

I'd be stunned if Memphis take Davis and Calderon and run thin at SF... doesn't seem like many teams could use a GOOD expiring PG, but if someone wants to save cap-room, PHX could maybe send Dudley/S.Brown/J.O'Neal for Calderon, leaving MEM with some decent depth at the wings. MEanwhile, I'd atleast try to get Ross from Toronto.

Wild guess it'll be Ed Davis for Jared Dudley.

So big savings this year, next year, Jared Dudley, and the Laker pick (for Terrence Ross going to Pheonix).

You guys will love Ed Davis if he comes to Memphis. He has a huge upside, and all star potential, if given minutes.
He can become the next Jermaine O'neal if given the minutes.

Did a revision that has Duhon, Davis, and Ross to Memphis. Memphis buys out Duhon for his option price and saves 8m next year along with 7m this year.

I don't understand the idea that it's inconceivable. The guy had one good playoff run and that makes him untouchable?

For those laughing at a combination of Jose and Ed. Ed and Jose have both been more important to the Raps than Rudy to Memphis this season. Please keep Gay, Raps have enough average wing players.

Clearly you have only seen dunk highlights from Raps games. Ross isn't ready to contribute much of anything else.

Who are the teams that would have interest in Calderon? L.A., Boston are two teams we know of.

I would throw Dallas in there as well. The whole Collison experiment hasn't panned out (hence the signing & release of Derek Fisher), & a player like Calderon would benefit them.

I agree Toronto doesn't have much in personnel that would upgrade the Grizzlies now, but IMO our front office guys want Davis (I assume to eventually replace Randolph).

How about...

Gay to Toronto
Calderon to Dallas
Davis, Marion, Beaubois to Memphis

Trade ID #6219955

That's irrelevant because we don't have the playing time at point guard to keep Calderon happy. And Davis for Arthur is essentially a swap. (if you're lucky)

Clearly you have only seen dunk highlights from Raps games. Ross isn't ready to contribute much of anything else.

I think the entire Raptors board disagrees with you here. He's not a good jump shooter? His three point percentage has not been as good as expected, but he does have a good stroke.

Memphis and Toronto don't fit as direct trading partners. I just don't see this working out in the long run. Who knows, a third team out there may step in. Meh.
