The Grizzlies main position that needs to be filled this offseason is at SF.

Needs

Versatile scorer
Perimeter shooter
Solid defense
Solid rebounder

Candidates

Gordon Hayward
Luol Deng
Chandler Parsons
Trevor Ariza
Paul Pierce

Any of those guys would be a big-time add except maybe Pierce... not sure how much his game has regressed.

Unfortunately Pierce is the only one who would sign with the Grizz since we only have the full mid level available. The other guys are all out of our price range due to the current market value. Each of them are looking for a yearly salary north of 8 million per year.

I still feel like we will have to trade for our starting SF, with the usual suspects being Jeff Green, Wilson Chandler, Mike Dunleavy, Harrison Barnes, Corey Brewer and Thaddeus Young.

The Grizz were rumored as being in contact with Pierce on last week. I'm not too sure that he'll be coming this way anytime soon in spite of my reasons of having him on the list above.

Jeff Green: I'm not too in love with the idea of Green as a starting SF. Sure he has the size of a SF, but the guy has the game of a PF. Probably make a good 6th Man from off the bench for a team.

Wilson Chandler: I'm aware of his athleticism from his days with the Knicks. Since he's been in Denver, I haven't seen much of his game since then. Only based on his profile that he's a decent slasher, durable defender, and decent offense.

Mike Dunleavy: Perimeter shooter More offensive minded than defensive minded. Not so sure he's the one the Grizz would look into.

Harrison Barnes: Would not mind getting Barnes. Athletic, can defend, slash to the post, set shooter from the perimeter.

Corey Brewer: very athletic, dangerous on fast breaks, good defender, offense has improve a bit.

Thaddeus Young: local player. Also see Jeff Green.

Ersan Ilysova intrigues me but does he have the foot speed for the SF position? I know he had ankle issues this past season, but he was very available prior to the Kidd hiring and it doesn't seem there were any takers.

SCRATCH Paul Pierce off the list since that dude wants 9 - 10 mill a year for two years, I guess he thinks its 2004 and not 2014.

Ilyasova has been in the trade rumors over the last two years. I'm aware of consistency issues on the offensive end. Not so much on his speed and durability to be a SF in the Grizz system.


Pierce won't get picked up that fast. At the going rate, he'll probably get a two year deal worth 12 to 14 million.

Someone (I think Chris Herrington) tweeted about the idea of signing a guy like Jordan Hamilton to a small, speculative type deal.

I'd be in favor of something like that before overpaying an aging veteran.

I saw the same tweet and I think it was in the context of not overpaying Mike Miller but paying a Jordan Hamilton who could be had for under 2 mil per year. The only thing is would that move solve our SF issue. I personally don't favor a signing where it is not certain that Quincy Pondexter would not start in front of them, because if that is the case what have we really done?

Well, quincy is not a bad player. If he is healthy im fine with him starting.

I just would rather take a shot at someone less costly. If it doesnt work out we just deal with it next year when we have more flexibility.

Well, quincy is not a bad player. If he is healthy im fine with him starting.

I get the financial concerns, but if Jordan Hamilton is the best the Grizzlies can do, for me that's not acceptable. Given the small window the Grizzlies now face.

I feel like Deng would be the perfect fit for the Grizz. tough mid range game, corner 3's and the ability to bother Durant, hes like a better shane battier in Memphis. I think stokes is going to be a steal where we got him, so im not sure how the numbers would work but conley, adams/allen, deng/johnson, z bo, marc, and lee and stokes off the bench is a serious contender in my mind

Deng would be cool to have for the Grizzlies. My concern is how much is he looking for in price? He could be looking for something between 10-12 million. Grizz looking to play smart financially with Marc Gasol's free agency status coming next summer.

yeah Deng would be a good fit at the mid level which is all we (like its my money) can pay, minus a sign and trade. I doubt the Cavs are interested in a T. Prince deal that nets us Deng.

The market has really exploded so a lot of experienced guys are out of range and those like Hamilton are maybe an upgrade over Prince but not the larger upgrade we need to really contend.

and there goes james Johnson.... ya know what I might be crazy for thinking this but I really liked what little bit I watched of alan Anderson of the nets last year, hes long, he competes and he can shoot, id like him over hamilton

Alan Anderson isn't a bad option. He did leave an impression on me in the playoffs with his style of play and his aggression. Only problem is that he's 32 yrs old and does not define our need to start at SF. He would however make a good backup SF if the Grizz can make room for it to happen.

Can't believe you guys forked out 12M over 3 years for Vince Carter. Probably good for one more season of production, but playing until he is 41?

I like Carter as a role player, he's been solid in Dallas. But, I feel like Grizzlies ownership are perfectly comfortable reaching for the middle of the stack, opposed to reaching for the top. I know the superstars were never in play, but I feel like the body of work of the Pera ownership group has been more about cost cutting than putting the best roster possible together.

Jordan Adam may have been a steal late in the first round though. Kudos to Chris Wallace.

We took on salary with the Bayless-Lee trade and saddle ourselves with Prince's corpse in the Rudy Gay trade. You should see the whole picture, not just the parts you want to see.
