2016 Grizzlies Offseason
The Grizzlies offseason is underway. The season the Grizzlies had endured was without injuries to key players who were crucial keys to the team. We saw a record for most D-League talents to join the team and limping into the playoffs. We saw Coach Jeorger discuss his disapproval of how old the team at the beginning of the season to his teary eyed post-playoff season elimination talk about respecting the guys for fighting hard against the odds.
This offseason will define the Grizzlies in terms of what direction, how much money to be spent, communication between the coaching staff, front office, and owner Robert Pera will stand up in the city of Memphis. Given how this city is a sports town based on it's history, the Grizzlies need to be smart and on point from start to finish on how the Grizzlies need to be constructed this offseason.
Will they look to add more marquee players around Mike Conley and Marc Gasol?
Will they be able to re-signed Mike Conley to a contract?
Will they look to close the doors on the Grit-N-Grind Era forever?
Will the front office and Jeorger ever get on the same page?
ETC.....ETC......ETC......

Re: 2016 Grizzlies Offseason
I thought last years off season was the most important, but this year is proving to be even more important.
Last year we resigned Marc Gasol, traded for Matt Barnes, drafted Jarrell Martin and signed Brandon Wright
in free agency. Before the start of the season, we (mainly me) would have given the moves a B+. After the
season coupled with trading for Mario Chalmers, we are less inclined to give the moves high marks.
This year is proving to be the Waterloo for the front office, as their ability to sell the future to potential free
agents, and current players has come under some scrutiny. Therefore I am going to briefly list who in a perfect
world we should aim at in free agency, the draft and possible trade from the roster.
WHY - because I have a little time, and secondly I want to get it out there prior to Chris Herrington doing so.
Lets start with the free agents:
Who we should aim at = Harrison Barnes
Who the Grizz are likely to sign = Joe Johnson
Who we should aim at = Allen Crabbe
Who the Grizz are likely to sign = Allen Crabbe (There is no reason they should not be able to secure his services)
Who we should aim at = Mirza Teletovic
Who the Grizz are likely to sign = no one (as they will probably role with what the current iteration of power forwards)
Who we should aim at = Donatas Montejunas
Who the Grizz are likely to sign = Donatas Monejunas (again no reason they couldn't unless they don't want the player)
Who we should aim at = Matthew Dellavadova
Who the Grizz are likely to sign = Mario Chalmers (they will once again chase a good deal over the production)
Consolation prizes: in case you miss on any of the targets and still need players;
Moe Harkless, Lance Stephenson (hint on my feeling RE: team option), Dion Waters,
Matt Barnes,
The Draft: picks #17 & #57
top target at #17: Taureen Prince
Denzel Valentine
Caris Levert
top target at #57
(does it really matter?)
Potential trades:
I will only mention who should be traded from the roster of current under contract players, you can make your own trades via your preferred method. Brandon Wright, because it does not look like it is going to go well here in Memphis,
Jordan Adams, trade him while you can to a team that can afford to wait and see, the Grizz need production now
Tony Allen, he still has value and a bench role on a contender may bring something back useful.
Potential targets:
Jose Calderon; why - we need our second point guard to be able to start and still be quality, given that the Grizz have passed on him twice in trades, this is probably unlikely.
Ben Mclemore: he is available and still on rookie deal, and in case you strike out in free agency or went big in the draft and still require a wing.
Victor Oladipo: will probably require our 1st rounder this year, but if Orlando pays major bucks on Evan Fournier, trading Oladipo would make some sense.
Michael Kidd Gilchrist: MAYBE he is available after not having him for much of the season, and they resign Nic Batum.
Trevor Ariza: Durant to Houston is the only way this happens

That depends on what the Grizzlies do in the offseason with the draft and FAs, and trades if any. I would like to hear the guys thoughts now that David Fizdale is official head coach of the Grizzlies.

Being a heat fan, you got a great player coach with Fizdale, expect chalmers and bird to help bring that Heat culture to Memphis. Being another Pat Riley Guy expect defense to be stellar! Not sure what offense will be ran, but expect Gasol to compete for DPY
Kevin Durrant is the best WNBA player in the NBA!

I think you can get a pretty good player at 17. Crabbe would be a good target in FA. Barnes I don't know. Phx is rumored to be going after him and I REALLY hope they don't. He had like a PER of 12.3 or something (league avg is 15), 38% from 3, 11.7 ppg, and 4.9 rpg. Now I imagine his scoring output could go up without playing alongside Curry and Thompson, but his 3pt % (and even 2 pt%) will probably drop without getting as wide open of looks.
A good stretch 4 would be nice, like Teletovic, but he seems to like Phx, and they seem to like him. I kind of like Leuer better and think he will be cheaper, but I don't think Phx will bring back both. Leuer might be a good secondary option for you there.

The Grizzlies actually had Leuer here for three years and traded him to the Suns last summer for the draft rights to Andrew Harrison. Leuer didn't prove to be effective with the Grizzlies when given the minutes to produce.
As for who the Grizzlies should acquire at 17. I'm locked on to either Domantas Sabonis or Demetrius Jackson. Sabonis as for his versatility on the offensive end from going inside for points and able to stretch out his offense like Z-Bo a bit. His defense however is a concern to me as he comes across like Greg Monroe not strong enough to defend the five and not as quick to defend the PF position. He will need to hit the weight room and get stronger and quicker with his lateral movements to make up the difference. DJ has agility and quickness to be a efficient PG in the league. His ability to slash to the post and be a perimeter threat can help wonders for the Grizzlies. He will need to work on staying consistent on the perimeter and continuing to improve his PG skills set to adjust to todays' NBA standards.
The Grizzlies need a SF in the worse way. As much as I like Batum as the overall choice, Charlotte and Batum may have a mutual understanding to look at re-signing in July. Parsons is cool as a player, but his history of injuries is a concern for me to just take a chance with him. Barnes has the athleticism and quickness, but in a half-court system, his skills set negate that all together plus his issues of staying consistent from beyond the arc. I think a trade will likely happen for the Grizzlies to acquire the SF we need.

Do you mind mentioning potential trade targets?
Because, I would love for a certain number 2? to make a return, but trying to measure the temperature in the room first.
The major concern is our front office (Chris Wallace) does not have a strong history of bringing in top free agents or smart decisions like a young free agent about to hit his prime like an Allen Crabbe for this year. His history screams taking on a contract which will be a bit of a let down, because usually these players are flawed in some way are simply no longer wanted like our 2?. I do hope he surprises me this off season but it is more likely he does what he typically does and what he is known for.
If the Grizz go chalk and draft a backup PG or project center at #17 then it is imperative that we strike gold on the SF front whether it be via free Agency or trade.

Yes, I knew you had Leuer, so would be hesitant to go after him again, but he was really solid for Phx this year...made the smart pass, shot over 40% from 3, played solid defense...good team player.

Potential Targets:
Rudy Gay - athleticism, slasher, transition offense, solid rebounder and scorer, clutch player, perimeter player albeit inconsistent, decent defender
Luol Deng - savvy and dependable vet, solid scorer and rebounder and defender, just coming out of his prime, just turned 31 yrs old, at least 3 to 4 years left in the tank
Bojan Bogdanovic- hitting his prime, slasher, perimeter player, transition offense, decent athleticism, decent defender

Sounds like the Suns benefited from Leuer from being in their system and should keep him as a result. As for getting after Allen Crabbe, to me it will depend on what happens with Jordan Adams. If he's traded somewhere during the draft, then I can see that happening as the Grizzlies attempted to draft Crabbe three yrs ago, but ended up drafting Jamaal Franklin instead(Probably should either traded away the pick as it turned out to be a waste of time).

You guys picked up Tony Wroten off waivers. To me this a pivotal step in transitioning to tank mode.
Wroten is experienced and well qualified to engineer nearly any tank job.
Well done.

Crazy thing is that the Grizzlies drafted Wroten three years ago. Traded him away to Philly and now he comes back. Feels like a renew, reuse, recycle theme to it.

well yeah, he's needed now.
This guy has an established niche and market now: He will make you really bad, really fast for a low price.
in the NBA, you need those kinds of players at certain times.

Disclaimer: Trades I post shouldn't make you stressed or angry if you disagree. If you say it's unproductive because it won't happen and we're only allowed to post deals that actually happen, it takes away 99% of trades here and the fun out of the board.

Re: 2016 Grizzlies Offseason
I think Wroten makes sense now as they got him to replace Lance Stephenson. Similar skillset in some regards but Wroten is massively cheaper.
Established Targets
Chandler Parsons- Not worth the max but with Stephenson now off we might be forced to overpay to stay in contention if we aren't going to rebuild and if Conley agrees to stay by getting him.
Luol Deng- He is kinda like Jeff Green, good for regular season productivity, not really a difference maker come playoff time. Probably wants to sign with a championship type team like GS or CLE.
Evan Turner- Mid Range scorer who normally plays for less than he is worth. Has bounced around the league alot though. Not known as a great defender but capable enough to be a primary scorer when our main guys have some off nights.
Allen Crabbe- Jury is still out as he has only had one good year. A good shooter no doubt, but Adams might turn out to be just as effective if healthy and given minutes.
Kent Bazemore- The one I like the most of all the previous from a cost savings/productivity standpoint. Not sure he wants to leave Atlanta and I am not sold on if he is a huge upgrade over Lance Stephenson if he wants similar money.
Diamonds in rough
Lance Thomas- Seems like a guy the Grizz might get to replace Barnes, cheaper and younger as well. Good defender.
Andrew Nicolson- With Ibaka now there they prob will not match if we make an offer. Still young and has a nice skillset with range.
E'Twaun Moore- Great shooter in limited minutes, another cheap option for our small market team. Mike James/Flip Murray hybrid.
Wild Cards
Rajan Rondo/Brandon Jennings/Jeremy Lin- If we have no chance at Conley resigning we might have to look at these three.

Anyone know what the deal with Hairston is? Since Charlotte declined his option, are we still limited to what we can offer him?

I was under the impression that the Grizzlies will not retain his services The guy simply did not take advantage of his opportunities after he was traded here. I expect him to either go back to D-Leagues or go overseas from here.
