Grizzlies Offseason

Post#1 » by Zordor » Sat Jun 18, 2016 1:47 pm

This is just my opinion on what the Grizzlies offseason is going to look like:

As it stands for guarenteed contracts:
Current roster / 2017 Salary
Marc Gasol - 21.2
Zach Randolph - 10.4
Brandan Wright - 5.7M
Tony Allen - 5.5M
Vince Carter - 4.3M
Jordan Adams - 1.5M
Jarell Martin - 1.3M
Jamychal Green - 1.0M
Xavier Mundford - 1.0 M
= 9 players

With an estimated 89M max this year
So about 43M left in cap room here

First order of business is clearly to resign conley, this isnt a lock, but its a very good possibility he resigns, probably about 22M a year
This leaves roughly 21M for 3-4 players and 2 draft picks (#17 and #57)

Memphis has been eyeing Malachi Richardson at #17 , and I figure they either sell out #57 for money or draft and stash

So going into free Agency Stephenson has a team option which think they should probably and probably will decline, it doesnt mean he cant be resigned for a longer term deal, but let's take care of a few others first.

So as it stands:

Conley-Munford
Allen-Carter-Adams
Richardson
Z-bo/Jamychal/Martin
Gasol/Wright

This really doesnt say championship team to me, nor does it say halfway decent rebuild, but there could be some adjustments made to pretty it up a little.

First, we just hired Fitzdale, a very respected coach from the Heat, here is a couple parts and pieces to why this might be good in other ways,

Very likely Chalmers will resign with memphis, he had an achilles tear last year, he might not be AS good, but he was a solid 6th man for memphis when they needed him most and I wouldnt be surprised if he took a small pay cut from market value to play for Fitzdale. Chalmers added some 3 point shooting in the backcourt we desperately needed last year, and if he isnt as fast and mobile because of the tear, he very well could be seeing more and more time outside the 3 point arc which could really help us. He also is very good in the pick and roll offense I see memphis playing a lot of this year.

And it really came to me as the heat are balancing trying to keep D wade and whiteside, they might have to make some "budget cuts" as well, and who better to take advantage of that than having Fitzdale as our coach to help lure at least one of these guys in. That guy being Luol Deng , we targeted him before the Jeff Green trade and though he isnt the most athletic, he can add some of that outside shooting touch we need, as well as giving us a viable option at the 3 man position

I can definitely see us resigning Matt Barnes to the Bi-Annual exception , its not much money, and its probably even a pay cut, even at his age, but I think he would do it, and it would only help Memphis if he puts out a performance like he did this year.

That really leaves Memphis with one more viable spot and it will most likely be a wing Fitz thinks he can manage and build into the rotation: Couple names might be Waiters, Gerald Green (who he just coached in Miami), and even Lance Stephenson if he signs a lower more long term contact.

This leaves:

Conley/Chalmers/Munford
Allen/Stephenson/Carter/Adams
Deng/Barnes/Richardson
Z-bo/Jamychal/Martin
Gasol/ Wright

Not so different in look from the team pre-injury last year, but it could pose an interesting dynamic for the new coach to play with some of the sets, get the young guns some minutes, and it should (in theory) be last year's squad with a few more options and spacing.
