Tank Mode Game

Post#1 » by boogiesdad » Tue Jan 15, 2019 4:40 am

Well, this season is not getting any better, but i'm being optimistic.

With that said, I curious to see what people could come up with if we went into full fledged, tank mode. So consider this a challenge.

It's important to remember that we are in salary cap hell, even for next year. The salary cap figures to be $109M, and we are on the books for $100M as it stands. We lose our first round pick in the 2019 draft, unless it's a top 8 pick (as of 1/28, we are in 8th place). We also have the (projected) 53rd pick in the second round of the draft.

Gasol has a player option for next year, so to keep him around another year, your going to have to be creative.

Let's see what everyone can come up with.

I don't think we are projected to have any 2nds in the draft. We traded our 2nd for Holiday (and play him 7min a game) and the Boston pick is top 55 protected.

I'll edit this further later:

Trade #1.1

MEM in: Batum, MEM 1st, worst 2019 2nd CHA has
MEM out: Gasol

BOS in: Bridges, Gasol
BOS out: Hayward, Memphis 1st

CHA in: Hayward
CHA out: Bridges, Batum, worst 2019 2nd

Memphis gets their pick back as well as a pick in this years draft
Boston does this to clear long term salary, get a blue chip prospect for their Davis offer, and honestly it may make their team better this year.
Charlotte does this to show Kemba they are wanting to win. They still have their pick this year to further upgrade their team if they wish.

Trade # 1.2

MEM in: CJ Miles, Biyombo, 2019 CHA 1st, 2021 TOR 1st (Protected), 2020 CLE 2nd
MEM out: Marc Gasol, Omri Casspi

TOR in: Jeremy Lamb
TOR out: CJ Miles, 2021 TOR 1st (Protected)

CHA in: Marc gasol, Omri Casspi
CHA out: Lamb, Biyombo, 2019 1st, 2020 CLE 2nd

Trade #2

MEM in: Brandon Knight, Isaiah Hartenstein, HOU 2019 1st, HOU 2021 1st Lottery protected then 2nds
MEM out: JaMychal Green, Garrett Temple

HOU in: JaMychal Green, Garrett Temple
HOU out: Brandon Knight, Isaiah Hartenstein, HOU 2019 1st, HOU 2021 1st Lottery protected then 2nds

Trade #3 To be continued...

MEM in:
MEM out: Conley

(I personally like a trade with IND based around Conley for Turner but I can't really see IND doing that)

I like the premise of some of these, but 2 1's for Gasol at his age will be tough. I think any plan most include moving Chandler or stretching him. Curious to see you do one plan, and take it all the way through to a projected lineup for next year. This is going to be a challenge.

MEM in: Otto Porter Jr + Satoransky + 2019 WAS 1st round pick (Top 10 protected) + 2019 BKN 2nd Round Pick
MEM out: Mike Conley

WAS in: Vucevic + Fournier
WAS out: Otto Porter Jr + Satoransky + 2019 WAS 1st round pick (Top 10 protected)

ORL in: Mike Conley
ORL out: Vucevic + Fournier + 2019 BKN 2nd Round Pick

Memphis acquires a pick and two players that can start.
Washington get rid of Porter's contract while solving their hole at center plus acquiring Fournier
Orlando finally solves their issue at PG

Considering the other mentioned trades (I would push for HOU to include Bruno Caboclo - shooting 43% from 3 + 3 blk/g in GLeague) we would be something like this:

PG Satoransky / Knight / Carter
SG Batum / Holiday
SF Kyle Anderson / Brooks
PF Porter Jr. / Caboclo / Rabb
C JJJ / Hartenstein / Biyombo

+ our 2019 1st round pick + WAS 1st round pick (top 10 protected) + 2019 CHA worst 2nd round pick + 2019 BKN 2nd round pick

It feels too rich for WAS but I like the premise. At a minimum you'd have to drop the pick or Satoransky and even then they still might not do it. I'd be happy even with that change though.

OK. If Conley and Gasol want out, we could do it with one trade. It would throw the team into "Tank Mode".

Trade ID #7160013

WAS Trades:
Otto Porter
25 year old, 6-8, 198 lb SF from Georgetown
12.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.9 apg in 29.0 minutes in 2018-2019
John Wall
28 year old, 6-4, 210 lb PG from Kentucky
20.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 8.7 apg in 34.5 minutes in 2018-2019
Ian Mahinmi
32 year old, 6-11, 262 lb C from STB Le Havre (France)
4.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 0.8 apg in 14.1 minutes in 2018-2019
Markieff Morris
29 year old, 6-10, 245 lb PF from Kansas
11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.8 apg in 26.0 minutes in 2018-2019
Dwight Howard
33 year old, 6-11, 265 lb C from Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (Georgia)
12.8 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 0.4 apg in 25.5 minutes in 2018-2019

2019 #1 Top 5 Protected

MEM Trades:

Mike Conley
31 year old, 6-1, 175 lb PG from Ohio State
20.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 6.1 apg in 33.7 minutes in 2018-2019
Marc Gasol
33 year old, 7-1, 255 lb C from Sant Josep Girona (Spain)
15.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.7 apg in 33.8 minutes in 2018-2019
Chandler Parsons
30 year old, 6-10, 230 lb SF from Florida
5.7 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 0.7 apg in 15.4 minutes in 2018-2019

For WAS:

They put 2 All-Star level performers on their team to surround Beal and Ariza, while shedding Wall's long term contract. Wall and Howard are out injured so its a huge win in a the East. This pushes WAS back into the playoff picture.

For MEM:

This trade starts a mini rebuild. Otto Porter can move into the starting SF position as a 3 and D wing this season. Next season a healthy Wall could lead a young team with huge potential. This would also put MEM into tank mode for the rest of the season ensuring they get back their BOS pick which would be TOP 3 based on tanking. MEM also sheds Chandler's contract.

2019 Draft: Possible Pick Range
#3-
#16-

Could provide us a tremendous chance to get a strong SG and C for next season. Who knows, we could get lucky on the lottery balls.

2019 Starting Lineup- Post Trade

PG: Wall
SG: Brooks
SF: Anderson, Potter
PF: Green (Resigned), Morris, Rabb
C:Jackson, Howard

Green could be traded this year before the deadline for a mid to late #1, and move JJJ back to the PF spot. This team could be remade into a high octane team.

Just kinda trying a mental exercise over the next few days but what trades could potentially be made with each team? Feel free to post ideas. I'll probably be more active Tuesday after my med school exam. Maybe having a rough idea of who would trade for what could help us compare offers and come up with a solid plan for this Tanking Game. I'm not saying one trade is better for us than another and I don't know if the other team would do any of the proposed deals but let's go crazy. Anyone with Mod powers feel free to edit this post and add trades to it.

Atlanta:
Could be a 3rd team in some trades but that's about it.

Boston:
BOS1
MEM gets: Hayward+Semi Ojeleye+2nds
BOS gets: Gasol+Green

Brooklyn:
BKN1
MEM gets: Crabbe+Den 1st
BKN gets: Expirings
I see this as about the only way BKN really enters a trade with us likely as a 3rd team. I think other teams would beat this offer though.

Charlotte:
CHA1
MEM gets: Biyombo+Lamb+Lottery protected 2019 1st+CLE 2020 2nd
CHA gets: Gasol

CHA2
MEM gets: Biyombo+Frank+Willy+Top 10 protected 2019 1st
CHA gets: Gasol+Casspi

CHA3
MEM gets: Biyombo+Lottery protected 2019 1st
CHA gets: expirings
This could be used in a 3 team deal

CHA4
MEM gets: Batum+Bridges+Biyombo+Lottery protected protected 2019 1st
CHA gets: Gasol+Green+Temple+Holiday

CHA5
CHA in - Marc Gasol/ Shelvin Mack
MEM in - Marvin Williams/ Jeremy Lamb/ 2019 1st rounder (unprotected)

CHA6
MEM in: Batum, Biyombo, Monk, Willy, 2019 1st
CHA in: Gasol, Green, Temple, Casspi

Chicago:
CHI1 - Herrdoktor33's idea
CHI gets: Gasol+Lee+Mack
MEM gets: Kanter+Portis+Dunn+Hezonja+CHI 2nd
NYK get: Jabari+Robin Lopez+Casspi

Cleveland:
Like Atlanta they can be used in a 3 team but not much more for us

Dallas:
DAL1
MEM gets: Jordan+2nds
DAL gets: Gasol

DAL2 - Bill Simmons
MEM gets: DSJ+Matthews+Jordan
DAL gets: Gasol+Conley
You could reroute the expirings for more assets potentially

DAL3
MEM gets: DSJ+Matthews+Powell
DAL gets: Conley, Casspi

Denver:
DEN1
MEM gets: Tyler Lydon
DEN gets: Casspi

DEN2 - Game Theory Podcast
MEM gets: Plumlee, Gary Harris
DEN gets: Conley, Rabb

DEN3
MEM gets: Monte Morris, Michael Porter Jr, Millsap
DEN gets: Conley, Green

DEN4
MEM gets: Plumlee, MPJ, Juan, Will Barton
DEN gets: Conley, Casspi, Mack

Detroit:
DET1
MEM gets: Reggie Jackson, Jon Leuer, Luke Kennard, Drummond, 2019 1st (+maybe 2nds)
DET gets: Conley, Gasol, Holiday

DET2
MEM gets: Reggie Jackson, Stanley Johnson, Jon Leuer, Luke Kennard, 2019 1st
DET gets: Conley, Holiday, Casspi

DET3
MEM gets: Drummond
DET gets: Gasol

Golden State:
GSW1
MEM gets: Iggy, 2019 1st
GSW get: Green, Temple

GSW2
MEM gets: two min guys with one being a rookie or else a couple 2nds
GSW get: Holiday

Houston:
HOU1
MEM gets: Knight, Hartenstein, 2019 1st
HOU gets: Green, Temple

HOU2
MEM gets: Chriss, min guy, 2nd
HOU gets: Holiday

HOU3
MEM gets: Gordon, Chriss, Knight, 2019 1st, Protected 2021 1st
HOU gets: Gasol, Holiday, Casspi
Gordon could go to a 3rd team for value

HOU4
MEM gets: Chriss, Nene, 2019 1st or multiple 2nds+Hartenstein
HOU gets: Green

Indiana:
IND1
MEM gets: Sabonis, Knight, Collison
IND gets: Conley, HOU 2019 1st
HOU gets: Tyreke Evans

IND2
MEM gets: Collison, Tyreke Evans, TJ Leaf, 2019 1st
IND gets: Conley, Casspi?

Clippers:
LAC1
MEM gets: Gallinari, Jerome Robinson
LAC gets: Gasol

Lakers:
LAL1
MEM gets: KCP, Lance Stephenson, Zubac, 2nd or two (maybe you weasel out the 2019 1st if we send back a 2nd)
LAL gets: Gasol

Miami:
MIA1
MEM gets: Whiteside, 2019 1st
MIA gets: Gasol

MIA2
I'm sure there is a Conley trade and Conley+Gasol trade based around their longer contracts

MIN1 - Matt Moore's idea
Wolves Get: Conley, Temple, Green

Time to get in on this: Operation Sunrise

Trade #1 (Credit to TheHartBreakKid)

M.Gasol, S. Mack, and 2022 SRP

TO

Lakers for KCP, R.Rondo, M. Beasley, I.Zubac, and Lakers 2019 FRP

The Grizzlies get some veterans on expiring contracts back in KCP, RR, and Beasley. The Grizzlies main get will focus on Zubac as he is a young and upcoming player with lots of potential to be a solid contributor for the franchise in the next few years. The Grizzlies also have an opportunity to strike on a FRP from the Lakers and scout who best fits the new era and said player around 3J as part of the rebuilding foundation. The Grizzlies can also utilize this opportunity to evaluate KCP as a potential FA consideration for skills set on both ends of the floor as he is coming into the prime of his career. RR could become a candidate for buyout for the Grizzlies.

For the Lakers, Marc follows the trail of his brother Pau and goes to Hollywood. Only difference is that Pau played with Kobe and Marc will play for Hollywood James. With Magic's need to turn the Lakers squad into a set of vets amongst second and third year players, is move will fit them best. Marc provides the Lakers with an inside/outside game to help the Lakers advantage on offense. This move should also rejuvenate his motivation to play for a playoff contender once again. Mack can provide the Lakers a PG who won't be a threat to Lonzo's chances as the main starter at PG. A decent contributor from off the bench.

Trade #2

C. Parsons, O. Casspi, and TPE of Deyonta Davis

TO

Knicks for C. Lee, L. Thomas, and F. Ntilikina

The Grizzlies get back Lee who who's familiar with the Grizzlies. He also would provide 3 & D off the bench for the team as well as veteran experience. Thomas is a go between at SF/PF who also gives the Grizzlies a non-guarantee contract option to exercise to get some salary off the cap. Ntilikina gives the Grizzlies a future PG who already has defense down in his repertoire. Like Conley was in his early years, his offense will need some development time if he wants his offense to be something to be reckon with in the near future.

Trade #3

JaMychal Green and Garrett Temple

TO

Sixers for W. Chandler, J. Patton, and Sixers 2019 FRP

The Grizzlies get back expiring contracts in both Chandler and Patton. Chandler provides the Grizzlies some athleticism at the SF position. (Edit) Chandler may serve as a buyout candidate due to being overthe roster limit. Patton is injured for the season. He's a project for the Grizzlies to develop. He's athletic, young, shot blocking, defensive and offensive potential for the Grizzlies to implement into their scheme for the future.

Both Green and Temple are expiring contracts for the Sixers. The Sixers get back a solid PF in Green, who can provide athleticism on both ends of the floor for the team. Temple can give them a 3 & D option from off the bench.

New Grizzlies

PG: Conley, Ntilikina, Carter
SG: KCP, Lee, Brooks
C: Zubac, Noah, Patton
PF: 3J, Beasley, Rabb
SF: K.A. Holiday, Thomas

Buyout Candidates: Rondo and Chandler

I can't see #2 happening with the Knicks wanting to make a splash in FA but the other trades seem reasonable.

It was my most difficult one. (Thx Chris Wallace) I feel in the long run that the stretch provision will be the realistic option for the Grizzlies at this juncture. Any trade that may involve CP25 will likely involve a draft pick. a la Nicolas Batum scenario. I had other trades involving Parsons on deck. The problem was that those teams require a FRP in my opinion. Atlanta would've been the exception, however I did not like the package the Grizzlies would have taken back. Basically, Plumlee, Lin, and a 2022 SRP. So I reneged on that deal.

I'm going to be honest, I seriously doubt atlanta would do that. There are very very few contracts worse than Parsons. The only trade I can see where we move him without giving up extra value would be a Parsons for Batum swap. Maybe CHA adds a very small sweetner such as a 2nd or Frank (though I doubt they would) but that's it.

Unfortunately that what makes it difficult to trade Parsons. I rather not pick up Batum's contract up due to his history of injuries and his extra year he has left in comparison to Parsons. In real time, I think the stretch provision is the way to go.

Coming up with trade ideas for all teams that are mildly fair and work financially is harder/more tedious than I thought

Trade with Charlotte:

Marc Gasol, Garrett Temple (expiring), JaMychal Green (expiring), Omri Casspi (expiring) for Nicolas Batum, Bismack Biyombo, Malik Monk, Willy Hernangomez + '19 Hornets 1st rounder (lottery protected)?

Why: Gasol is the star to keep Walker. Temple, Green and Casspi are useful role players in the playoffs. And with trading Batum and Biyombo the Hornets clear a ton of salary.

Trade with New York:

Mike Conley, Shelvin Mack (expiring) for Tim Hardaway Jr, Lance Thomas, Frank Ntilikina + '20 and '21 Hornets 2nd rounders?

Why: Conley solves the PG situation for the Knicks and they become a more attractive free agent destination, while getting Hardaway and Thomas of the books.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now the Grizzlies can immediately build around Ntilikina, Carter, Monk, Hardaway Jr, Brooks, Anderson, Rabb, Jackson Jr, Hernangomez + '19 Grizzlies 1st + '19 Hornets 1st. That doesn't look too bad. Batum and Biyombo can be usuful professional vets as well.

Lets look at a different approach.

Milwaukee Trades:
PG George Hill
PG Eric Bledsoe
C Jason Smith
C Brook Lopez
C Thon Maker
SG Donte DiVincenzo
2019 and 2021 #1 (Top 5 Protected)

Memphis Trades:
Mike Conley
Marc Gasol

This lineup for Milwaukee would need to add a couple of players through the D league, but would give Milwaukee a Finals type team.

MEM could release Smith and Lopez since they are small expirings.

I'm not sure when the next available 1st is for MIL. I think 2023 though it wouldn't convey that year due to having a 2019 and 2021 pick out and the 19 pick likely not conveying this year.

#1 DAL-MEM-WAS-HOU

DAL in: Conley, Dekker, Holiday, Chriss
DAL out: DSJ, Matthews, Powell

MEM in: Ian Mahinmi, DSJ, Dwight Howard, Knight, Troy Brown, WAS 2019 1st Lottery protected, HOU 2019 1st
MEM out: Conley, Casspi, Holiday, Temple

WAS in: Matthews, Powell, Casspi, 2021 HOU 2nd
WAS out: Mahinmi, Morris, Howard, Dekker, Troy Brown, 2019 1st lottery protected

HOU in: Temple, Morris
HOU out: Knight, Chriss, 2019 1st, 2021 2nd
Spoiler:
Dallas does this for Conley mainly. Powell is included to help lower their salary this offseason. They also get a look at Chriss and Dekker (RFA) who can both be off their books this offseason as well. Holiday would likely be good with Doncic. Holiday excels at hitting the open corner 3 (something he has gotten all of like 2 of with Memphis) so Doncic driving and kicking it to him would be great.

Memphis does this for the picks and prospects.

Washington does this to get out of the tax, save money next season, and improve the team this season for the playoff push. If they don't make the playoffs, they keep their pick. Having Brown in may be too much though. Maybe a Rabb for someone swap? Protections on their pick I think would be 2019 Lot protected, 2020 Lot protected, then 2nds.

Houston slightly drops salary this season and gets out of Knight's contract next season for their 1st.

#2 MEM-CHA (Memphis waives Noah)

MEM in: Biyombo, Frank, 2019 1st
MEM out: Gasol

CHA in: Gasol
CHA out: Biyombo, Frank, 2019 1st
Spoiler:
Charlotte tries to show Kemba they are interested in winning. They like Monk but I feel like he is on the edge of the rotation so maybe they put him in instead of Frank and the pick. Memphis does it for the pick (or Monk).

#3 MEM-PHI

MEM in: Muscala, Patton, CHI 2019 2nd, DAL 2020 2nd
MEM out: Green, Mack

PHI in: Green, Mack
PHI out: Muscala, Patton, CHI 2019 2nd, DAL 2020 2nd
Spoiler:
PHI dips into their vast chest of 2nds to upgrade their roster for this year.

Memphis does it for the 2nds.

I considered a Green/CJ Miles+2021 TOR 1st (Lottery protected) that someone suggested on a podcast but I just didn't think TOR would do that.

Final roster:
PG: DSJ, Carter
SG: Brooks, Knight
SF: Anderson, Brown, Parsons
PF: JJJ, Frank Kaminski, Muscala
C: Rabb, Biyombo, Mahinmi, Patton, Howard

2019 draft picks:
MEM 1st
HOU 1st
WAS 1st (Lottery protected)
CHI 2nd

Howard, Parsons, Biyombo, Knight, and Mahinmi would all be expiring contracts next season. I'd even strongly consider waiving Howard this season and keeping Bruno. Otherwise they could be moved for more assets+bad contracts or we get a ton of cap space that offseason when we likely owe an unprotected pick though I'd probably buy out Parsons and Howard if we don't move them this offseason. Could give out one or two large 1 year deals and/or chase after RFAs. Maybe structure a deal like the Parker contract and offer a RFA a max contract with a TO in the 2nd year.

Pick-wise I'd want to try and grab Jontay Porter with either the HOU, CHA, or WAS 1st and if Killian Tillie falls to the CHI 2nd I'd grab him in a heartbeat. Culver may be someone to take with our pick or else we trade back a couple spots for De'Andre Hunter. If NAW is available at one of the other HOU/WAS/CHA picks I'd probably grab him.

2019-20 Roster:
PG: DSJ, Culver, Carter
SG: Brooks, NAW, Knight
SF: Anderson, Brown
PF: JJJ, Killian Tillie, Frank Kaminski
C: Jontay Porter, Rabb, Biyombo, Mahinmi

Plus a pick.
