The Chandler Parsons Conundrum is over in Memphis. What they will get back in return isn't all enticing, but you get what you can and they both have expiring contracts. The roster adds up to 18. I'm sure between buyouts and trades, the roster will balance out later down the line.

Hoorah?

Code: Select all

The trade allows Memphis to move on from perhaps the biggest personnel mistake in franchise history. Largely because of chronic knee problems, Parsons has been unproductive since signing a four-year, $94 million maximum contract, averaging 7.2 points and 2.6 rebounds while playing only 95 games over the last three seasons.

Credit where it is due. This is a solid move for us, though I still wish we secured some kind of young asset by way of miracle. That said, I understand how bad Parsons' contract is and we are lucky to get what we did. I think Miles Plumlee we can buyout and Hill might be an ok veteran presence, but I wouldn't mind buying him out either.

With this trade Memphis if they retain Wright, would have 18 active roster spots.

I would have liked Noah to return but turning Parsons contract into a backup C is a clear benefit in trade.

Reports are out that Memphis want to keep Iggy, I assume those comments are to reduce the buyout cost. (We want you, you have to give up more for us to let you go). All of Iggy, Bradley, Korver waived is 15 roster spots minus Noah, Holiday, Dorsey, Zeller. Personally I would have liked Noah & Holiday back.

I'm not a cap expert, so correct me if wrong. If Memphis manage to get Iggy to help them save 10m in a buyout, combined with waiving the non guaranteed contracts of Bradley & Korver, Memphis can shed 25m.. Dropping the remaining cap hold after Wright & Clarke would be 10.7m. Memphis currently have -20m practical cap space. Which could end up at 15m practical cap space?.

Hmm, you are probably more well versed. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't it be $6.48m from Bradley, $10m Iggy, $3.75m from Korver? I am looking at spotrac and assuming these are the guaranteed numbers. Perhaps there is a percentage of salaries non-guaranteed included in spotrac's cap estimate I am missing? Wouldn't this net you $20m in cap space?

As for the Plumlee contract, I would assume we are buying him out and bringing back Noah, though it would cost us maybe an extra ~$7m to do so assuming he signs around minimum. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think that is a big deal given our practical cap space and the expectation we deal Crowder.

Bradley 12m - 2m guarantee = 10m
Korver 7.6m - 3m guarantee = 4.6m
If they get Iggy to give up 10 of his 17m = 10m

Total = 24.6m

Quick question. Why buyout Parsons now that he's an expiring?. It certainly wasn't for a roster spot as they traded him for 2 players.

I hope you're right about Plumlee & Noah. Any chance they buyout Hill? because there's a bigger log jam on the wing than at C.

Personally, I think there's potential for a consolidation trade with the moves being made.

C - Jonas / Plumlee / Rabb - (Noah)

PF - 3J / Clarke / Crowder / Bruno

SF - Iggy / Anderson / Miles / Hill / Yuta

SG - Allen / Bradley / Brooks - (Holiday/Dorsey)

PG - Ja / (RFA Wright) / Carter

18 active of 21

Holiday, Dorsey Noah cap hold outside of Wright & Clarke = 10.7m if they denounce.

24.6 + 10.7 = 35m roughly - the -20 practical cap space = 15m roughly

I would have 0 problem with a Hill buyout. I think it might be easier to negotiate and/or maybe we could restructure and then include in another deal? With Yuta's solid development showing in summer league, I think he's an odd man out.

I hope so too - Noah is worlds better than Miles imho.

My thought on that might be that Delon Wright is commanding a higher salary than we expected. They clearly want to clear some cap space for something they are doing - hopefully another trade. Clearly they are pulling for near term cap flexibility for some reason. Parsons seems to be completely incapable of performing up to any standard, so he is dead roster space. Also, it is likely they couldn't include him in any trade, despite the expiring, in which case they felt it would be easier to negotiate a buyout with Plumlee/Hill (which is what reports have said).

Noah is easily better than Miles, I also like his personality, defensive fit with Jonas. I think the most important position to have quality depth is at centre.

(Jonas, Noah & Jackson in small ball) is a top 5 centre rotation in the league IMO.

(3J, Crowder, Clarke, Brumo) Memphis corner stone piece & quality depth

Love Memphis front court & with Ja they just need to rectify/shakeout the wing rotation while building pick currency & they're golden.

I haven't heard anything revolving around Wright. The one team I thought could scoop him up was the Suns. Magic don't want a PG that can't shoot.
