As a rookie, Bane carved out rotation minutes off the bench and averaged 9.2 points on 60% True Shooting, including 43.2% beyond the arc. As a sophomore, he’s started every game and is averaging 16.5 points on 58.6% TS, including 41.2% beyond the arc.

He’s climbing the offensive hierarchy as well. Not only has his usage ballooned from 14.7% to 20.6% (via Cleaning The Glass), Memphis is allocating him more on-ball reps than last year, and he’s thriving in that role.

Nearly 30% of his baskets are unassisted this season, a spike from 17.9% in 2020-21. His pull-up jumper frequency was previously 25.5% — now it’s 37%. Despite being tasked with greater creation duties in Year 2, Bane’s TS% is 3.5 points above league average, besting last season’s mark of 2.8 points.

Among 103 players with at least 75 pull-up attempts, Bane’s 51.9% Effective Field Goal Percentage ranks ninth, per NBA.com. A season ago, under the same criteria, he was 115th among 187 players at 44.1% eFG. He possesses a dazzling step-back, calmly paces himself in ball-screens to find room and buries buckets with a pop-gun release.

Bane has been incredible. Taken at 30, you hope that the guy can "stick" in the league and simply become a rotation player off the bench, but, in his second seasons, he's already proving that he'll become more than that

Yeah he is already a quality starter. Will be interesting to see what he looks like in a few years though I think we aren't too far off of his ceiling. Still if this is what he is I love it.

The NBA's 10 Biggest Surprises

Desmond Bane's Power-Up

Image

Desmond Bane wasted little time establishing himself as the one that got away at the 2020 draft. The 30th selection snagged an All-Rookie spot while shining in a three-and-D role that seemed it might fit him like a tailored suit for the next decade-plus.

But Bane had other plans, which apparently included gaining access to the Mushroom Kingdom and swiping one of Mario's star power-ups.

Bane the three-and-D ace is out; Bane the 17.4-points-per-game scorer and reliable shot-creator is in.

Despite doubling his shot attempts, his shooting rates haven't faltered (46.6/41.6/90.6). Despite a big jump in usage percentage (from 16.1 to 22.7), his turnover percentage has dropped (10.2 to 8.8). Despite creating more of his offense and handling a much more significant role, his true shooting percentage has barely budged (60 percent last season, 58.5 now).

After shattering expectations as a rookie, he has engineered another exponential leap for a follow-up. The Memphis Grizzlies can't wait to see what's next.

"He's only scratching the surface of what he can be," Grizzlies skipper Taylor Jenkins said, per The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov.

I think the next 2020 redraft articles we see are going to have him at four behind only Edwards, Ball and Tyrese.

I can't remember which national podcast, but one of them actually did have Bane at #4 in a redraft. Or at least one host had him at #4 and the other thought that was maybe a little too high though reasonable and had him a couple spots lower.

Bane is the freaking man. Love this guy. Saw the improvement in summer league and he continues to excel shooting it.

When I see the way Bane plays the game, I can see the next Ray Allen in this guy. His efficiency in the three ball has been solid. His numbers across the board continue to be an uptick, albeit this is his second year. If he continues this, I dare say Bane has the potential to become a 20PPG scorer inthe backcourt for the Grizzlies. That sounds very promising.

I'm so glad Des is in the 3-PT contest. I hope he can pull it off for the win next weekend.

He and JJJ are keeping us afloat with Ja and Adams out. I really wish Dillon would stop shooting so damn much - he should never take more shots than Bane.

Him trying to be more of a playmaker has been great.

His progress so far is indeed impressive. The ultimate success will depend on his further advancement of ball handling skills. In which case he would become a pg backup and make Tyus expandable.

Bane now needs to prove that he is worth the max. It’s quite a high bar.

He was playing like a max guy to start the season last year, but then got slowed by that broken bone in his foot. Now that he had surgery and, in theory, the pain is gone he will hopefully return to that form or maybe yet be something even better.
