Grizzlies Trade Deadline Moves

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Fri Feb 7, 2025 2:46 am

The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone. A lot of action has been ongoing since last Saturday night with the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers. Today was no different. The Grizzlies were active and they made significant moves for financial flexibility.

I like the Jake move. We couldn't resign him and he gets a chance at playing time. Sure extra depth is always good, but if we are putting Jake in then our playoff hopes are in deep trouble already.

The Smart move frustrates me but I guess I kinda get it. So in essence, the FO felt moving him now would be cheaper and if JJJ doesn't make All NBA then they will need that cap room to re-negotiate and extend him. But JJJ looks like he will be All NBA so that is a meh point and if we really did need more room then we move Smart this summer (for a higher cost I"m sure). That would give us another vet guy who we can use in the playoffs if needed and if we are actually healthy and he isn't getting minutes, I feel he would be a strong locker room vet as we try for a deep playoff push. He also was a big expiring deal next summer that could have been useful for salary matching in a potential trade. If we get Bruce Brown after a buyout which some suspect then it makes this better, but it sucks paying two firsts and Tyus to get Smart just to pay another first to dump him.

The Smart trades have to be the biggest boondoggle Klieman has been involved in thus far. Granted, no one knew that Smart would be out with finger injuries for nearly his entire tenure and get bloated as hell; however, we traded Tyus and a two 1sts to acquire him and then turn around the next season and trade another 1st to (prematurely IMO) salary dump him. Absolutely awful management of assets.

I don't have alot of hope for Bagley, but I did want us to acquire another big at the deadline. We've got a few months to kick the tire on him and see if he can contribute in any meaningful way. If so, maybe we retain him with a cheap new contract and, if not, then he walks this summer, hammering home the fact that the Smart trades were one of the worst follies in Grizz history.

I would call this deadline rather uneventful.

If 2 2nds are via WAS, then I would give the Smart trade B, even B+.

LRV for cap and 2nd is B+, if not A-.

If we manage to re-sign JJJ, I will give A+ to both trades. 5 more years of this stud is by far more valuable than anything else.

I do believe that we should be getting a big Smart size TPE out of all this. We can absorb Davis into the ZWill TPE, and LaRavia was enough money to match Bags. So if we decide/cannot go the JJJ re-negotiate plan, at least we have the MLE and this huge TPE as options to use next year.

Your right....I had in my mind LaRavia's option amount not this year's salary when I did the head math which would have been within the 7.5m buffer. So looks like only a TPE for around 8 million for Smart and another small one 3.3m for LaRavia. Still something but a lot less useful than I hope for.

The problem right now is with the JJJ renegotiation we still likely have to pay to move off Clarke to give him enough of a raise for him to sign. Love to get JJJ locked up on a new deal but it going to tough to improve our team outside of internal improvement next year. Dump Clarke(Konchar too?) to resign JJJ, draft a 2nd rounder and only have the room exception and min contracts left to improve the team outside of trades.

It looks like the case. But I wonder how much roster improvement will be required given that our young core will likely reach the next level in their development. Ja, Bane, JJJ - will become adults, fully matured, you might call them even vets. Wells and Edey will be better for sure. Vince, Spencer, Pippen, GG, Aldama? Likely too. And FO will bring 2-3 new development kids. Does it sound like a legitimate contender roster? Hell yes to me. With or without Clarke.

Hopefully not much....... but I think Huff who has been good could be improved upon. But another thing is we will be very limited in trades since we won't have really much in the way of tradeable bigger salaries. So no Durant size trades can be offered if we go down this route without including one of our big 3.

The Room exception is at least a decent amount now, 8.8m can fetch a rotation level player.
