Re: Play In: MEM vs GSW
Lots of things could have been better last night, but I wanted to focus on the last non-play.
Listening to a bunch of talk today about Santi blowing it.
Right or wrong, here are my thoughts:
In the huddle the coach drew up a play for the inbounds that was supposed to go to Desmond Bane. Everyone knew their positioning and where the ball was supposed to go.
When the play first started, Kennard was free for a quick second as his defensive man was confused. The issue became that Luke likely a secondary option was free immediately. Santi held it for the original called play by coach. Then nobody got free after that.
It looked like the only one that started with Santi receiving the ball from the official was Luke.
Bane was not in motion and I didn't see any screens being set for him to pop free, but he was open in the opposite corner at the end.
Ja was hobbled and not fast enough to be much other than a decoy. Otherwise I would have Ja receive it in the backcourt and charge forward to create chaos.
JJJ was being held on the opposite sideline and couldn't pull free.
So for all the blame piled on him, he tried to do what the coach called. It was just too slow to develop.
Granted he could have just thrown it in and put it in play as a Hail Mary, but alas he didn't and he shoulders that responsibility.
If he had thrown it to Luke- He loses because that wasn't the play.
If he had thrown it in for the Hail Mary- He loses because we likely wind up in the same spot at the end.
Just bad all the way around, let's just be fair to him about his decision/indecision.
If I could have changed anything, I would put Ja as the inbounder or placed him in the backcourt to stretch out their defense a little more.

Completely agree Cubboo.
Also we knew we weren't going to get a favorable whistle (Ja pissing off Silver, NBA wanting GSW in the playoffs for views) but it still sucked. Props to our guys for still almost pulling it out. If Ja hadn't gotten hurt I think we win.
