Griz PG of the Future: Mayo vs Conley

No doubt that Wallace and Iavaroni drafted Conley last year with him being the future PG for years to come for the Griz....
and i've always thought Mayo would be a SG in the NBA....but after reading that he wants to be a PG and thinking more about it....
should we look at Mayo as a possible PG for years to come for the Griz (if he is available that is)....
should we consider drafting him to play PG and then move conley?
how do you stack these 2 up versus each other in terms of being a PG?

Why do we want Mayo? Sure, he is a workaholic. But, I do not believe that he is the type of player that we are looking for. He's an attitude and a problem waiting to happen. Plus, we do not want our system built around his perimeter jumper. That's not the future I think is best suitable for this franchise.
As for Conley, I do not believe that he is the future PG of our franchise either. I would be open to dealing him for a future pick- possibly Portland.

"He's an attitude and a problem waiting to happen. "
To Mayo's credit, I haven't seen one piece of reporting yet that would indicate this. In fact, he stepped up and played the 2 in college, never a negative word out of him. Again, show me instances of "me firstness" from OJ and I'll reconsider.

Yeah. Mayo's personality has gotten a bad rap. It really took a turn when the referee (of all people) flopped on minimal contact with him.

Or the time that he threw the ball into the stands after his last high school game. Or the time that he was arrogant enough to tell USC that he was going to grace them with his presence even though they didn't recruit him. Or maybe in the McDonalds game where he shot like 10 percent and took more shots than anyone there even though he came off the bench. I still like him, though. He went through a whole season without a peep from him and showed me that he could defend and take high percentage shots. That's good enough for me.

It has widely been reported that he is a headcase. He took money and even punched his teammate and broke his nose before the season started. (not on purpose of course- Daniel Hackett) In high school, he was suspended a couple times.

For the Grizz, yes.
I would have traded them as well. But, I do not like the top 5 for our squad. We already traded a finesse forward in Pau. Why take Lopez? Mayo is too much of a headcase and has little to no court vision. Randolph is way overrated and is maybe 5 years away from making an impact. There is just better at the top of next year's draft.

That was the incident I just mentioned. That referee made Ginobili and Divac proud.

Regardless, you don't put your hands on a referee. He'll be out of the league as soon as he came if he doesn't take this into account.

To be honest, he didn't even put his hands on him. Magic Johnson made more contact with the referee than what Mayo did.

I'm more inclined to have Lowry and Crittendon at the point than Conley or Mayo.
I really believe Mayo is in it for himself, ie. the Kobe of 5 years ago.
Don't get me wrong he is an awesome talent. last year he was projected #1 for this draft. He dropped for a reason.
You draft players based on potential, and your needs. We have 3 PG's currently (Crittendon can float the 1 and 2). We have 2 SG's(Miller and JCN if resigned). We are strong at the 3, bit he has no backup. Weak at the 4 and 5.
Mayo will not solve all our issues.
We would be better served by trading down draft day. Face it, we won't be a playoff team next year, but we can get solid pieces to build for 2010.
Suggestions, trade:
Miller, future #2, rights to Maliak Badiane to PHO for Diaw, #15, #48
#5 to the Nets for #10, #21, #40
then draft the following:
#10 Eric Gordon SG
#15 Marrese Speights PF
#21 Robin Lopez C
#28 Joey Dorsey PF/C
#40 Bill Walker SF
#48 Richard Roby SG
New Lineup:
Conley/Lowry/Crittendon
Gordon/Crittendon/Roby
Gay/Diaw/Walker
Warrick/Speights/Dorsey/Cardinal
Millic/Lopez/Dorsey/Collins
We add a ton of talent that can fit Coach I's system, and give him 2 years to make it blend.

To borrow the proposal from coach Cal when Marcus Camby told him he wanted to be a pg, he said "that's fine, but my pg doesn't handle the ball up the court and I post him in the paint 90% of the time".
So, if Mayo wants to play at the PG position that's fine. But my pg would not be bringing the ball up court and would create his own shot. However my SG would do these things and Conley would be in that position.
