Marc Gasol signing 3 yr contract!

Post#1 » by grizzleGM » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:11 pm

Marc Gasol will be signing a 3 year $9mil deal to join the Grizzlies.

This puts the current lineup:

Conley/Lowry/Critt
Miller/Critt
Gay/
???/Warrick/Cardinal
Darko/Gasol/Collins

Unless Wallace or Iavoroni have the idea of playing Gasol and Darko at the same time, I would think this is a signal that the Grizz will definitely be drafting a PF capable of starting with the #5.

This move will leave the Grizz with about $7-8mil for the FA market.

my calculations put our salary now at ~49.4 million

Miller... 9
Darko.... 7
BC...... 6.3
Collins... 6.2
Conley.... 3.6
Gay.... 2.6
Hak.... 2.1
Critt... 1.4
Kyle.... 1.2
JC/Damon... 2 <<<<< ????
Gasol..... 3
#5..... 4
#28..... 1
------------
Total = 49.4

which would be more like 5 or 6 million

either way, we aren't going to sign any better than an MLE player anyway...

the gasol signing should be a clear signal that going after a RFA is out the window

Well that is some good news,

And Love or Gallinari I assume will be the pick

7-8 mil in cap space does change the FA outlook, However I never understood the calls for people wanting to sign Monta to a 10-12 mil or max contract when Gasol (well not a superstar) was dealt to lose his huge contract...

players left that could be had for 5-8 mil...

Josh Childress
JR Smith (hope they atleast make him and offer)
Corey Magette
Ricky Davis

so no chance at Iggy, Okafor, Ellis, Josh Smith, Beidrens, etc etc

Gasol will end up being the starter over Darko, he's improved a lot over the years and if you get it right with your two draft picks, your future's not looking bad at all.

His game is similar to Pau's.

even if he doesn't start over Darko.....just the fact that darko has some more competition to push him will be good....

While it is a start, I hope this is not the most significant signing of the off season. If the dollars hold true, JR Smith and Mykael Pietrus could still be in play as both would or could start at the 2.

Your figure assumes that the cap will not increase. I think you will see the cap increase by about $1.4mil.

Two free agents that should be on the Grizzlies radar are Kellena Azibuike and CJ Miles.

Azibuike opted out from the Warriors and is unrestricted. He would make a very nice backup at both the shooting guard and small forward positions. He's a solid, versatile player and I don't think he would cost a whole lot to sign. He had a great start to last season but when Nelson started to readjust his rotations he kind of fell off statistically.

Miles is restricted, but the Jazz have Ronnie Brewer and a couple other young players at shooting guard and small forward. Miles doesn't get alot of minutes since Sloan likes to play veterans and Miles, who came right of highschool to the NBA is still only 22 years old. But he has loads of potential and is a very good shooter. I could see him filling the role that Navarro had. My guess is that anything around $3mil and the Jazz don't match.

My three favorite FA's for the 2 would be Pietrus, Azubuike or JR Smith.

This is a good signing for the Grizzlies as they can focus their 28th pick on a SG in the draft or go after one in FA. In terms to the potential FA's the Grizz should consider, I would lean on Pietrus, Evans, and Azibuike.

I like Pietrus as far as fitting in as a tall, athletic SG.

I hope he comes over and plays great and is better than his sister so everyone will shut up about the trade.

I think that most Grizz fans hope that you are right. If MGasol is good enough to start over Darko, the Pau trade will not look quite as bad. Hopefully this is the deal that 5 years from now... no one can believe that the Lakers traded Marc and 2 firsts for Pau.

Believe me, i have seen both play and Gasol is head and shoulders better then Darko.
Gasol is as good as Darko thinks he is and better.
If Scola who was a weaker rebounder in Europe then Gasol can avrage around 7 rebounds a game and almost 10 when he got minutes, then believe me Marc as a starter can avrage around 10 rebounds as well.
If he will be a starter for you guys a predict a 14/9 from him.

As a Magic fan I know how frustrating Darko Milicic can be. He has loads on natural talent, but he can't seem to put it all together. He's own mind and lack of desire are his own worst enemy. I'm sure Marc Gasol will be starting at center over Darko before the All-Star break.

I'm looking to see Marc on the court and hopefully he has a promising career like his brother Pau.
