RealGM fan mock draft: you make the call

Post#1 » by smoothie » Fri Jun 20, 2008 5:51 pm

with less than a week left before the draft, i'm hoping to put together a fan mock draft of the first round by going from board to board and getting the fans to make the pick.

using knowledge of recent reports from the team you follow most closely, please form an educated guess as to whom your team will select and why. this is not about who you want your team to draft, but who you think they want to draft.

so far the draft has played out with no surprises, except for wolves fans believing that their teams second choice after mayo would be gallinari, as well as a close call in seattle with #4 almost going to westbrook.

draft board:
1. chicago - rose
2. miami - beasely
3. minnesota - mayo
4. seattle - bayless
5. memphis - ??

there's a lot of rumors and speculation around your pick. i'm very interested to read your responses! you're on the clock!

Kevin Love. Fills a need, worked out really well and seems to be cool with playing for the Grizz.

Lopez is out with the signing of Marc Gasol.

It will either be Love or Gordon, and I think they will go with the sure thing in Love.

LOVE

Is Memphis really prepared for 'Gay Love'?

interesting point about the signing of gasol.

a gay-love pairing would definitely increase your ball movement. maybe you could try to get head from the rockets while your at it... luther head, obviously.

by the way..whats this about gordon? i didnt think a guard whould stand a chance...

I just think the Grizz's two most glaring needs are a true athletic SG and PF. I think they will be able to find an SG at #28 or in the FA market.

Mickael Pietrus or JR Smith are both guys that could be had easily with our cap room. Smith is younger but Pietrus may be a better fit for the Grizz.

The Grizz have two needs, long term: A banger at the 4 that can also score and a capable scorer/defender at the 2. Mike Miller is playing more or less out of position at the 2 and he doesn't fit the long term needs of the team. Hakim Warrick is an offensive minded 4 that couldn't bang with a AAU team.

With Love and Gordon being the best options (IMO) of those two slots, I'd tip the hat to Love.

And FWIW, even if the Gasol signing doesn't happen, Brooke Lopez is NOT an option.

i see your point.

wasn't gordon one of the guards who refused to come in for a workout? has management said anything for or against gordon or love?

I think you are correct about Gordon, but with kids from the US, teams will not take these veiled threats. What are they going to do? Go play overseas and never play here?

good point. but why risk the 5th overall pick on a guy you've never seen workout?

doesn't seem like something carlesemo would be comfortable with, coming from san antonio where they are so careful with thier picks.

then again you know him better so you tell me what you think.

The Grizz's GM has already said multiple times that he has no qualms about taking one of the elite guys at 5 if that's what's needed. Also note, the Grizz's scouting director is on the local ESPN radio station right now and a workout with Gordon has been arranged, making that likely a moot point.

However, I think Love (if available) has the inside track by a huge margin, based on the team's needs, his college performance and his workout, which blew everyone away (reportedly).

I agree with you smoothie. I would never do it, and I think it is easier to get a quality SG later in the draft or through FA than it is to find a PF or C. I would draft Love and be done with it.

It is looking like CDR may be slipping and may be available at 28. I would take him also and try to get another SG in FA.

I would love if the rumored deal were true (Lowry, #28 for Kleiza, #20).

If the Grizz do make the trade with Denver (which is a no brainer) the target at #20 would likely be
Courtney Lee from Western Kentucky. While I would personally prefer Nicolas Batum, Lee is more NBA ready right now and he shot the lights out in his workout with the Grizz. Most mock drafts have him going at #22 to Orlando, so the deal makes a lot of sense which gives me a lot of caution regarding it actually happening.
