What do the Grizz do Thursday when...

Post#1 » by grizzleGM » Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:06 pm

The draft happens like:
1 - Rose
2 - Beasley
3 - Love
4 - Mayo

What do the Grizz do at 5, if those 4 are off the board?

Not a If. This is exactly what's going to happen with Love/Mayo possibly switching places.

HOnestly... I don't care. If I had to guess, I'd guess Lopez but I suspect the Grizzlies will try to trade. I got a bad feeling the player they get will be a non factor for a while, which is worst case.

Don't know what the Grizz will do, but I'll be cussing like a sailor.

Gordon, Gallinari or Alexander.

Actually, if that scenario plays out I wouldn't mind seeing them moving down for multiple picks and/or a pick and a vet.

yep, that is what will happen

nothing goes our way....

my new crazy, half-drunk idea....is to trade the 5th pick to seattle for their lottery pick next year, so that we have enough money to sign Josh Smith to an offer sheet.....

and then i put down the crack pipe

If we had any assurance that Josh Smith actually wanted to be here, I would be all for it. Unfortunately, I don't know of anything like that and could only assume that the opposite is true.

if the draft goes as you say (and that's very, very possible), I may very well vomit. Seriously.

I'd really hope that we'd trade out totally at that point.

It was at about this point last year that the thought "OMG we're not going to get Al Horford are we" really sank in :(

That half drunken thought was better than most people's regular thoughts. Excellent point that I hope our Grizz take to heart. No reason to draft this year with Rubio on the horizon.

taking trades out of the situation, would you rather see the Grizz take Gordon, Bayless, or Gallinari?
I think I would take a chance at Gallinari and move Gay to the SG.

I say no. Grizzlies would be too weak on the perimeter D

The organization has been on the clock since the Gasol trade so results are necessary now. They can ill afford to be in the lottery and trade the pick for a future pick. Having said that it does seem that if it wasn't for bad luck the Grizz would not have any luck at all. The scenario is entirely plausible and if it holds true then the pick is either Gordon, Bayless, or Gallinari. Randolph has killed his chance with his work ethic being questioned and possible shoulder injury and Brook Lopez has been rendered moot with the addition of Marc Gasol.

How unfortunate is it to have the three worst things happen on draft night?
1. Not able to trade up and draft Beasley
2. Not able to draft OJ Mayo at #5
3. Not able to draft Kevin Love at #5

To have 1 or 2 would be expected but to have all three happen is just ridiculous.

Maybe this is where the rumors that you're trading the pick are coming from.

According to the Grizz's beat writer (FWIW), the FO is working hard to trade the pick currently - to move up. I'm sure they're investigating all angles. I genuinely don't see them moving down for moving down's sake. In other words, I don't see the Grizz moving down in the draft unless it's for a deal that makes really good sense and is slanted in their favor.

We'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

I don't see what the big problem is...Eric Gordon could end up being an absolute scoring machine in this league. Yeah, we would be weak at the 4, but we would still have Miller/Lowery/Hakim to use as trade bait....plus we are one of like four teams that will have more than the MLE! With that said, I would rather have Mayo, or trade up for Beasley. However, Gordon will be a stud in this league for year's to come!

I think Gordon has the opportunity to be either a great SG in this league or the 9th player on any teams bench. I just wonder what his progression will be like in the NBA.

I'd love for the Grizz to have Gordon. Drafting him at 5 is another matter.

What is the difference between drafting him at 5 and letting him slip to 7? (and then trading for him)

If he's drafted at 5, he's all you get. If the Grizz move down and snag him they'll land something else. Gordon, alone at 5 just doesn't do it for me. Just my opinion though.
