Would the Grizzlies make an offer to Ben Gordon?

Post#1 » by ctorres » Fri Sep 5, 2008 3:15 pm

Looking into Ben Gordon's situation with the Bulls, I was wondering if there was a chance that the Grizzlies could make an offer to Gordon. I think there is a strong possibility that the Bulls would not match an offer for Gordon.

If the Grizzlies acquired Gordon, that would possibly move OJ Mayo to start at the point.

Grizzlies fans would have to decide on "Gordon > Conley" or "Conley > Gordon".

I doubt it. At the moment, the Grizz' biggest needs are at the 4 and at the back up 3. In fact, we're currently overstocked on tweener guards (on rookie contracts no less), so I really doubt we'd make an offer to a tweener guard.

As for Mayo at the point, maybe that would make sense in the future - but at the moment, Mayo simply lacks the sufficient decision-making abilities to be an NBA point (i.e. look at his TO numbers from summer league).

well, dude, as a bulls fan i can honestly 100 percent tell you

if you guys made an offer to gordon for less than 11 mil a year and got him drunk/high enough to sign it, im pretty sure the bulls would match seeing as how we're offering 6 years 59 mil

That's a terrible thing to guarantee.

if the Grizz offer the same contract that they offered Josh Smith - 5 years about 58 million - the Bulls would NOT match. Why? Because it would throw the Bulls into Lux tax & the owner is determined not to pay it.

The Bulls have offered the most that they can offer without hitting Lux tax - 6 yrs/$59 mill. Grizz can only offer 5 years. But 5 years for almost the same total is more per year & the Bulls will pass on matching it

The Bulls are gambling that the Grizz will not make an offer. If the Grizz call them on it, Bulls will fold.

I don't expect any more big offers this offseason the Grizzlies. Unless something came up through trade (hopefully not Randolph), I see no big moves coming from us this offseason.

I agree. I think they will just go with what they have. We're still not sure exactly where Mayo's best position is, and what type of player will best compliment him. I certainly wouldn't be giving up big dollars to a player like Gordon until I saw Mayo for a whole season.

If Mayo settles in nicely alongside Conley then it's wasted money for Gordon. If Mayo looks more comfortable at the point then there's some good shooting guards such as Demar DeRozan that will be there at next years draft and perhaps Conley could be parlayed into a power forward. I guess I'm saying that keeping options open is the best strategy at this time.

Save the cap space in case the right power forward comes along. As a Sonics fan I watched how easily a solid player like Kurt Thomas was had just so a team could save some salary( and Phoenix regretted that trade). And then that same player commanded a first round pick later on when the Spurs looked for depth and toughness for their playoff run. Watch for the trade deadline to make for much better trade situations.
