Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
I believe Rudy and the Grizzlies can negotiate an extension this summer. My bet is that he will ask for the max (or close to it) no matter what. With the economy the way it is and how the Grizzlies are, do you guys think an extension will be completed?
If it doesn't get done, Rudy will be another name added to the 2010 free agent class.

I would think the Grizz will talk extension for Rudy come the offseason. The rebuilding process can't afford to take any steps backwards if you want to improve the team for the better in the future.

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
After passing up on names like Amare Stoudemire and Michael Beasley to keep Rudy Gay, there is no way Memphis will let him leave via free agency in 2010. They will probably try to sign him to an extension this October, and if they can't get it done, then they will keep negotiations ongoing all throughout the 2009-2010 season and in the summer. If they still can't sign him, then they will just let another team do the signing and match the offer, for he is a restricted free agent.
If for some reason Rudy tells management that he doesn't want to re-sign or play with Memphis when they start talking to him about a new contract, then they will put him on the market and start proposing trades to other teams. But there is no way the Grizzlies are just going to let him walk in 2010 without getting anything back. He will either be locked up long-term or traded in a package for a bigger star.

I do not expect him to get extended this offseason. It may happen during the season at the earliest, but there is the possibility that he goes into the offseason of 2010 waiting to get a deal done.

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
Rudy will get a contract similiar to the deal Danny Granger received. He will get extended this summer and the deadline I think is around October. If for some reason he is not extended than he would be a restricted free agent after next season. His CAP figure is set for this season so extending him this summer and hoping the economy turns around is not a bad move plus you are still two years away after that from the max contract of OJ Mayo. You can still sign David Lee to a free agent contract around the 10 million a year he will be seeking and not be hurt. Lee can't get that long term deal from anyone other than Detroit who may not even be interested. They are the only other team with a possible hole at the power forward position who will have the CAP space.

I guess Indiana waiting so late is what made me think it could go into the season. Looks like the end of October is the deadline.

I doubt it. Something tells me that the front office and Rudy are very far on apart on the value of an extension.

I see Rudy getting somewhere between $54M-$60M. That is unless he does a shorter contract like Wade, Lebron, and Bosh.

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
This is a very simple question to answer...
1) If the Grizz are going to sign a major FA this summer, then yes they may extend Rudy an offer this summer.
2) If the Grizz never plan on spending their cap money on an outside FA, then yes they may extend Rudy an offer this summer.
3) If the Grizz are attempting to be a player in the 2010 FA market, they will not extend Rudy until after they sign a player in the summer of 2010.
My hope is number 1, but probably number 2... Cheap bastards!

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
how would memphis fans feel about this:
Chris Bosh (resigned to a four year Max contract) + Joey Graham + 1st round pick (likely 8-10)
for Rudy Gay (resigned at 5yrs./55 mil) + Top 3 protected draft pick (likely 3-6)

The better question: How would Raptors fans feel about this? Memphis rapes Toronto in that deal.

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
If Rudy is resigned this summer, it'll likely be the same/similar salary structure to the deal that Danny Granger got 5 and 60 or so. We'll just have to wait and see what the Grizz, and Rudy, think about what he's worth.

He's not worth what we are going to give him most likely. As much as I love his promise, his offensive efficiency is not there from the floor.

WEll what do you expect, he proved last year he can be a great scorer in the leauge, so what do you guys do? you get Mayo and give him the keys to the car.
You would have been better with Love next to Gasol

Re: Will Rudy Gay get an extension this summer?
Not so much. Kevin Love isn't a player that a team could make marketable profits off of throughtout the season. The Grizz needed a player who could help put some butts in those empty seats at FEF on the nightly basis. Love isn't that player due to the lack of better athleticism. Mayo has that plus the ability to stretch out the offense and that's the reason why the Grizz traded for him.
