________

Now before someone instantly yells out that we should get Griffin, I think its important to look at what they would bring to the table for our current roster...

What we need from the few games I have seen is a player that can go inside and do the dirty work and play some good defense. It's important to remember that we always get burned by the good PF's in the west like Stoudamire, Nowitzki, Gasol, Duncan etc. So for pure defense, it would seem that Hill is the obvious pick. He has good size and is very smart on that end of the floor. He would probably get us 11-9-2 next year as our starting PF. I have seen him compared to Chris Wilcox meets Chris Bosh.

However, if we want a player that can score as a 1st option then Griffin is probably just that for you. He has good size with a very nicely filled out frame. Pretty good D that if refined would have the chance to be maybe the best defensive big man in the southwest after TD. He is also very young as he just turned 20 and is only getting better, and he has out of this world athleticism. He should be a 15-8-3 player in our lineup next year. Many compare him to a more athletic/muscular Carlos Boozer.

If you want the PF that can be molded into a slightly more defensive Pau Gasol as it sounds, then Monroe is your friend. He has range on his shot that is out to the NBA 3-point line. He also has many crafty moves once in the paint like Gasol had. His defense is pretty decent but he could be exposed at the next level for he takes many chances. He also has been filling out, but the problem is that once he got over 260, he started to become less athletic so he might need to play at a low weight like Gasol in the 240 range. Overall he is a very smart player that could develop nicely as a 2nd option to Mayo and Gay. I could see him putting up 15-5-3 player here in Memphis.

So what would we rather have? A defensive-minded PF, a Scoring PF, or a Euro-Style PF? We already have 2 proven scorers in Mayo/Gay to go along with a nice up and coming PG and a good rebounding Center...both oh whom give us about 10 PPG. SO who do you what kind of PF do you want?

I'd be happy with any of the three.

1) Griffin
2) Hill
3) Monroe

I would obviously want Griffin first and I really dont know who is better out of the other 2. I also heard someone say that Monroe wanted to return to Georgetown next year.

You have it correct with the title of your topic. Griffin/Hill/Monroe. But if Monroe does decide to return to Georgetown, you better keep your fingers crossed that the lotto balls do the Grizzlies a favor. Griffin and Hill both could be off the board by the time Memphis picks.

I'm usually all for discussion but Griffin is all by himself here. This is a franchise PF vs a couple of potential quality starters. If the Grizzlies get Griffin then everyting falls into place for the rest of the roster.

Griffin becomes the franchise player and as such the team goes from being soft to tough
Mayo becomes a very very good second option playing off an elite interior big
Gay becomes a third option and basically gets to be a finisher which is his game
Gasol & Conley get to just concern themselves with being solid starters

Arthur, Millic, Jaric, Miles, etc get only have to be a decent bench.

Now getting Hill would also help the team but the question becomes how much? Is he actually going to be better then Arthur longterm who is younger and perhaps more talented? If Darrell Arthur had returned to Kansas its very likely he'd have been the second PF drafted in 2009.

If you can't be 100% sure that Hill is better then Arthur then wouldn't the Grizzlies be better off spending money on Boozer, Millsap, Powe, Odom, etc and perhaps packaging the pick with Millic and or Jaric to get a veteran PG?

There's no question that Griffin is in a league of his own. As for the lotto balls, I see it being tight by season's end with Memphis, LA, and Washington, with Sacramento ending up at the bottom and OKC winning a few more games than the middle three, so who knows what will happen with the lottery draft?

I also agree with JMillott that if they aren't in a position to draft Griffin there could be other options out there besides Hill or Monroe, although we do know they want to build through the draft and might not be willing to spend for the free agents mentioned, although it's tough to say if teams will hold a tighter line with the economy and the Grizzlies may not have to hand out as much as believed for a good free agent power forward.

If Griffin is out of their reach, Monroe decides to return to Geaorgetown, and the lotto balls don't fall in their favor to get Hill, they may be forced into another route, which may turn out better for them. My mantra for this draft and free agency this summer if toughnes and character. That has to be the focus for me.

I think Odom and Boozer will be looking at playoff situations for themselves. I can see Utah overspending a little to re-sign Milsap and letting Boozer walk.

So if a power forward wasn't in the cards in the draft, I could see Leon Powe being a free agent target for around $7mil. I could see trading down to Chicago's range to get Ty Thomas and the Bulls pick. I could see helping out the Wizards big payroll to get Andre Blatche by taking on Mike James expiring contract. And my favorite, which would never happen, which is trading Conley and the Grizzlies pick to Detroit for Rodney Stuckey and the Pistons pick, which Memphis could use on Terrence Williams. I think the trio of Stuckey, Williams, and Powe would certainly add much needed toughness and character.

But I'm not giving up on Blake Griffin until the draft lottery happens.
