grizzleGM's 2009 offseason

Post#1 » by grizzleGM » Fri Jun 5, 2009 1:06 am

Ok here are my goals to work toward:
1) Be better than last year
2) Move Mayo to the point
3) Get a really good 6th man
4) Stay under the cap

1 - Trade #2, Jaric to Sacramento for #4, #23 (if and only if Harden is available @ #4)
2 - Select Harden #4
3 - Select Chase Budinger #23
4 - Select Omri Casspi #27
5 - Select Danny Green #35
6 - Sign Marcin Gortat (4 years $30mil front-loaded:$8,$8,$7,$7)
7 - Sign Paul Milsap (5 years $55mil front-loaded:$13,$12,$11,$10,$9)
8 - Trade Conley, Buckner to Portland for Sergio Rodriguez, Travis Outlaw

Grizz Lineup
Mayo/Sergio
Harden/Budinger/Green
Gay/Outlaw/Casspi
Milsap/Darko/Arthur
Gasol/Gortat/Haddadi

Grizz cap # would be $54.3
Mayo $4.2
Sergio $1.9
Harden $3.8
Budinger $1.3
Green $0.5
Gay $3.3
Outlaw $4.0
Casspi $1.1
Milsap $13
Darko $7.5
Arthur $1.0
Gasol $3.2
Gortat $8
Haddadi $1.5

Any thoughts???

If we were somehow to pull all this off, I would LOVE this team.

Looks good, at least on paper...

Gortat is a good player and I would love to see him in our uniform, but he doesn´t worth that much. I think we can sign him for 14M/3 yrs or something like this...

Yeah, that is actually a pretty good plan. Like what was previously stated the only issue would be Marcin Gortat's offer. I especially love the idea of Mayo/Harden backcourt. We would be such a great shooting team. I am also prepared to be on board for firing Coach Hollins if he is not on board for Mayo playing the point sooner rather than later. All and all the plan is very smart in light of our inability to acquire a superstar. Good job!

If nothing else, having the NBA's first Iranian and first Israeli players (and seeing them on the court together) would be awesome.

The Mini UN:

8 Americans
2 Spaniards
1 Israeli
1 Iranian
1 Pole
1 Serbian

The question is - what nationality are Cap Space and Flex I Bility?

I think some team will offer Gortat the MLE this offseason, which is why I was considering 'overpaying' him.

I'd prefer to overpay Glen Davis. That's just me though.

While I like Gortat, there's no need for him.

Especially at that kind of price tag.

Later I will post my most likely offseason knowing the kind of crap that Heisley likes to pull.

That could really be an issue, cause Haddadi may refuse to play with an israeli. It had happened before.

And I prefer to have Gortar with the MLE. He brings shot blocking presence to our team.

You could well be right Barba - however, from what I've seen and heard from the young man, if that ended up happening it would be because of pressure from home and not he personal choice.

I think a Glen Davis "type" is what they need. A strong, big body that is physical. Davis has had a really up and down season but showed some signs of being a good power forward. Has he paid enough dues behind Garnett and Powe, and has he learned the solid fundamentals from Garnett and defensive coach Tom Thibideau? If he has matured and is dedicated and willing to put in the work that's required to be a starting power forward then Davis might be the guy. His stats aren't that great but he hasn't played bigtime minutes either in his career.

I've also been impressed with both Trevor Ariza and Michael Pietrus. Both would be the kind of sixth man I've been talking about that the Grizzlies need. Davis, Pietrus, an experienced backup pointguard, would all help for sure.

Thoughts on Sideshow Bob aka Anderson Varejao?

I'm all for AV as the rotation guy that flips between 4/5. So a lineup of Gasol, AV and X at 4 - each getting ~30+ minutes would be excellent in my book.

OK... so let's say that the Grizz end up drafting Thabeet. Who should the Grizz go after in FA???
1 - Millsap
2 - Varejao
3 - Big Baby Davis
4 - Klieza

Don't even think of it. I refuse to let that happen.

Yeah, banish the thought. Regardless, I do think they should go after their power forward in free agency. I'm beginning to think that Detroit is going to have the upper hand in getting who they want over Memphis. I'm sorry, but if I'm a free agent and have two identical offers I go with the team with the bigger history in the bigger market. Just the way it is for me.

So I'm assuming it will be one of Boozer or Milsap for the Pistons, with Utah retaining whichever one is left. Lamar Odom was just quoted as saying he thinks he'll be returning to the Lakers. Brandon Bass is fine, as is Villineuva, but both are restricted free agents and are more offensive minded with little defense, something I think Memphis needs in the interior, although Bass might be on the verge of emerging as a better player than he's shown playing in the shadow of Dirk.

So I'm narrowing it down to Davis and Varejao, two bigger players. Varejao's agent just made a comment about him looking at over $8mil a season. I think Davis could be had for that much with Boston not matching. I think both players aren't worth more than that, if that amount. And the Grizzlies could frontload a contract for Davis with him getting more up front and declining year to year to the tune of a yearly average of around $7mil.

Those two are the likely free agent candidates to me.

There's also David Lee, but he might be asking for way more than he's probably worth.
