Trade without giving up players

Post#1 » by radtech » Sun Jun 14, 2009 4:08 pm

Does Memphis have the capspace to take a large contract without giving any player in return?

GSW trades Monta Ellis, Brandan Wright, and the 7th pick for the 2nd pick and Darko Milicic.

Is this possible under the current rules?

There seems to be some chatter regarding trading Monta Ellis, but I recently read that your GM and your head coach made the trip to Memphis to congratulate him on the birth of a child, which would be a strange occurrence for a player you intend to trade.

The Grizz would love to have Ellis and could absorb the salary without any difficulty. It would seem like you are overpaying but hey don't let that stop you.

Where do we sign?

I don't know if a Juice and Ellis backcourt could work.

But this deal does intrigue me.

I'm in on that deal. 7th will still get a solid player, we get rid of darko and use him for something as opposed to just letting him expire, and we get a great scorer and an improving PF.

I'd imagine that GSW would MUCH rather put Crawford in there than Ellis, though....

while it is unlikely that Golden State would agree with that deal as constructed but that is the type of deal I would love to have involving the #2 pick.

An All Star, a top ten pick and a project, coupled with our other late first and #36. That is a total of five players that could really remake our roster.

The thought of Brandan Wright in a Grizz jersey makes me sick to my stomach. I can't imagine having to deal with yet another under size, under strengthed bean pole manning the 4. Seriously, I bet supermodels are calling him asking how he keeps his body fat so low.

Beanpole? Yes. Undersized, no. Isn't Wright a legit 6'10"? And if I recall both Marcus Camby and Chris Bosh started out around the same weight as Brandon Wright.

I'll be the first to admit I like strong physical enforcers as power forwards( I really used to like watching Charles Oakley, PJ Brown, and Larry Johnson in their prime) but I'll cut Wright some slack. The kid does have serious individual skills. My only concern with him is that he seems fragile as a potato chip at a young age.

Maybe that's why I like Glen Davis. He reminds me of an old school player. The same with Kendrick Perkins.

With Wright, I perfered the Grizz drafted him over Conley back in 2007. Like you stated DT, he has some skills that can be taken seriously with more hard work to elevate his game. One issue I have is that the Grizzlies don't have a big man coach who can help the PF and center players on how to improve their game from defense, rebounds, to box outs, teaching experience, and be effective offensively. It's what's the Grizzlies are missing from the coaching staff. BTW, good call ups on Oakley, Brown and LJ.

209 lbs. That's undersized. Period. That's undersized for a 3, let alone a 4. He's not just a beanpole, he's weak. I'm sick and freakin' tired of project Strotential. At this point I'm all for tried and true. And for whatever's new it better be over the top in potential or exactly what we need. Brandan Wright sure as heck isn't that.

How do you feel about Big Baby? He seemed to step out of Garnetts shadow and be his own man in the playoffs. I feel with a bit more dedication to his conditioning he could be a serious force as a team's starting power forward. He has the desire. He even impressed me with his skill level.

Huge Glen Davis fan! He would be an interesting player in the West as well. I'd love to see the Grizz land a big time 4 as well as Davis. Davis could then get starters minutes splitting time at 4 and 5. I think he'd be a fan favorite in Memphis from day one. Great kid, great story and turning into a very solid NBA player.
